Currently lusting after… | A Lab On Fire at Anthropologie

Oh my god, you guys. These sound amazing! They’re tiny ($32 US for 0.5 fl oz), but – um, yes please.

    From the Anthropologie site:

“Each of these four scents from niche perfumers A Lab on Fire, are created by a famous “nose,” batched in a state-of-the-art facility, and packaged and labeled by hand in Brooklyn.

    • What We Do Is Secret: the olfactory footprint of A Lab on Fire; bergamot, nutmeg, pepper, leather, jasmine, sandalwood patchouli and birch (SPICE)
    • What We Do In Paris Is Secret: developed by perfumer Dominique Ropion; a blend of bergamot, honey, lychee fruit, Turkish rose, vanilla, heliotrope, tonka bean, sandalwood and ambergris (SPICE)
    • Rose Rebelle SC-7545: an explosion of Bulgarian and Turkish roses, blended with valerian, red currant, ivy leaves, musk and labdanum (FLORAL)
    • L’Anonyme ou OP-1475-A: developed by perfumer Olivier Polge; a rich blend of bergamot, geranium, blonde woods, white amber and leather (WOODSY)”

I’m dying over the notes listing for What We Do Is Secret. Bergamot, nutmeg, pepper, leather, and patchouli, all in one little bottle! It sounds like a dream come true – but I’m wary to order, seeing as the four A Lab On Fire EdPs are online exclusives. Has anyone tried? Thoughts; opinions?

(And Olivier Polge; they’ve gone and gotten themselves a Polge! It’s no secret that I’m head over heels for just about any Polge creation, be it by Jacques or Olivier. Now that is a family with talent.)

China Glaze Magnetix review, photos, swatches

The product: China Glaze Magnetix Nail Lacquers in Attraction and Instant Chemistry

Does anyone else remember when Lancome put out Le Magnetique, back in 2007? I remember thinking it was so cool – it was the first I’d ever seen of magnetic polish, and no one else was doing it at the time!

The trend may have taken a while (okay, like, five years, which in internet-time is like forever) to take off, but I’d say they’re finally coming into the limelight.

    China Glaze Magnetix 3-in-1 magnet

China Glaze Magnetix Nail Lacquer in Attraction

China Glaze Magnetix Nail Lacquer in Instant Chemistry

The first few times I tried these Magnetix polishes, I wasn’t really impressed – they had the potential to be awesome, but they just seemed kind of mediocre, you know? But I gave them another try, and then another, and by the third time, I was starting to see what all the hype was about.

For starters, Instant Chemistry is just about the sexiest burgundy-plum polish I’ve ever come across, and (while it looks a little streaky during application), it settles into just the right evenness. I know not everyone agrees with me on this, but I like a little bit of a brushed-metal finish in my metallics and shimmers – not so much that it’s streaky, but just enough to give a little texture.

Instant Chemistry with topcoat in artificial lighting. Just one coat!

Diagonal lines on index finger, star design on middle finger, plain ring finger, herringbone pinkie finger.

And Attraction; oh my heart! It’s a little on the streaky side when left un-magnetized, but get that sucker under the magnet and wow. It lights up like the night sky, the base shade getting darker and the silver shimmer becoming starkly contrastive. Takes a few tries to get used to application process, but it’s so, so worth it.

(Just to note – this post contains three separate photo sets, as the results are quite different depending on application. I dawdled a bit the first time, but the patterns are so much more obvious if you hurry with the magnet!)

Instant Chemistry and star design; no topcoat, one layer.

    The verdict?

I didn’t think I’d like these, after the first time I gave them a go, but it turned out I just wasn’t being quick enough getting my nail to the magnet. If you’re okay with being a bit of a speedy Gonzales with these polishes (a pop culture reference which, to be entirely honest, I don’t actually understand outside the context of colloquialisms), I’d say give these a try!

The magnet effects are (of course) incredibly cool, and the shades are absolute stunners. I’ll still be on the lookout for a magnetic polish with even more pop!, but in the meantime, I’m quite happy with these!

Attraction and star design on thumb; Instant Chemistry on ring and pinkie fingers. (Plain and herringbone, consecutively. Two coats, no topcoat.) Artificial lighting.

Someone had to say it: Tom Ford does metallics, and his models look vaguely like they’re in pain.

Um. Other adjectives that are applicable in this instance: uncomfortable, jaundiced, distorted, squished, emaciated.

For anyone who is really looking forward to this collection – um, sorry? The model on the right has some really awesome-looking nails, but aside from that, all I’m seeing is way too much orange, some pretty unfortunate lip colours, and a shoulder that looks like it’s actually, make that two shoulders that look like they’ve either been dislocated or just chopped off and repositioned altogether.

Anyhow. I’m going to go with uncomfortable as the word of the day.

Can it be May now, please? | Clarins Enchanted Summer

Because Clarins’ Summer 2012 collection, Enchanted Summer, hits counters May 1st.

    And is it ever stunning.

The inspiration: Voyage to the heart of India

Dare to sport a sunny complexion, intense eye make-up, and sparkling lip colour. This summer, Clarins Make-Up travels to the heart of India, an authentic voyage where traditional patterns and shimmery tones reign.

Once a year, from New Delhi to Pondicherry, India turns into a fabulous colour festival. The entire country resonates to the enchanting rhythms of the Holi Fest where vibrant pigments are used as symbols: green for harmony, red for joy and love, orange for optimism and blue for vitality. Happy Holi!

    Enchanted by Clarins.”

    In the collection

Enchanted Colour Quartet & Liner Palette

Do I even need to say it? This palette looks amazing, you guys. I’m a huge Clarins palette fan (as you all well know), so I’m itching to get my hands on this. Click on the image below to enlarge – after all, bigger is better, right?

    Kohl Kajal

This Limited Edition liner will be come in two colours (black and violet), promising creamy, intense, long-lasting colour both on the lashlines and waterlines.

I’ll hold my judgement on these until they come out – I haven’t found a kohl thus far that hasn’t disappointed me, so I’m hesitant to get excited this early on in the game.

    Bronzing Duo SPF 15

This Mineral Powder Compact – 100% Mineral Screen contains mineral-based SPF, white tea extract (to help combat against pollution), crowberry, & vitamin E (to fight free radicals). It’ll be available in three shades (LightMedium, and Dark), and to my knowledge, will be joining Clarins’ permanent line-up.

The best part? The compact will be lightly perfumed with the scent of Clarins’ Sun Care range – which I happen to love. Clarins; a brand after my own heart!

Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balm – new generation

Someone sound the alarm bells, a brand actually listened to its consumers! The Instant Smooth balms are back, and (just like we all wished for), they’re returning with an extra pigment punch.

Clarins is promising the world with these ones: “the colour of a lipstick, the transparency of a gloss, and the comfort of a lip balm.” Let’s hope they can deliver, yeah?

Note: only Crystal Violet and Crystal Coral will be available in Canada. If you’re dying for the red or pink shades, you’ll have to CP them from another country!

    Lavender + Taupe smokey eyes

So, in an excellent showing of “it takes Rae forever to post absolutely everything,” here’s an eye look that I absolutely couldn’t wait to photograph & post. The photos, snapped within 48 hours of my becoming re-infatuated with lavender (totally Xiao’s fault), are… wait for it… three months old.

    /sighs

Despite the fact that I am now considerably less excited about lavender (it’s so much more exciting during a season in which it isn’t already being overdone), I’m still quite fond of this look. Enjoy!

I used Rimmel Glam’Eyes in Royal Violet (review) for the violet in this look, but I think I’m going to need a new matte lavender soon – it’s good, for a $5 shadow, but you really have to pack it on. If anyone has recommendations, they’d definitely be appreciated!

To juxtapose something warm and wearable against the ethereal purple tones of Royal Violet, I added a mix of MAC Satin Taupe (swatches) and Ulta Molten (swatches) around the edges and along most of the lower lashline – a sheer layer of Satin Taupe toward the inner corner, and Molten concentrated on the outer corner, to add depth without closing in the eye area.

The look was finished with a smudgy flick of Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in Expresso and one coat of Annabelle Le Big Show Mascara (review). I’d thought about lining with the gorgeous MAC Teddy (review), but the Marcelle won out in the end – though Teddy is absolutely delicious (and a dream to smudge out), the wear time on the Marcelle is so much better.

Since doing this look (and this is a bit of an unrelated ramble), Expresso has actually moved into my “daily” tin – brushes, liners, and mascaras that I find myself reaching for quite often. It’s not breathtaking, but it’s still a lovely chocolate brown with subtle gold flecks; the perfect balance between no-nonsense and attention-grabbing.

Swatched L-R: MAC Satin Taupe, Marcelle Expresso, Rimmel Royal Violet, Ulta Molten

    One last thing…

Just threw together a quick assortment of other lavender eyeshadows, in case anyone else is being bitten by the lavender bug as well! I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these, if you’ve tried them, or perhaps if anyone has an etailer recommendation for a nice matte lavender shadow?

    New 04/03/12

One of these days, I’m seriously going to get my act in gear and figure out how to juggle blogging, more blogging, going to Uni, and being disabled.

Possibly I will require a permanent central line of adrenaline and/or a brain transplant to achieve this, but, well. Whatever it takes, right?

(P.S. This widget is enormous, sorry! I just really didn’t want to gloss over anything, so I figured it would be better to overkill a bit than to leave you hanging. After all, knowledge is power, and I’m set on turning you lot into tiny little beauty superheroes by 2013.)

(It’s going remarkably well so far.)

Walk the (long-wearing) line | Marcelle Waterproof Lip Definition Crayon review, swatches, photos

The product: Marcelle Waterproof Lip Definition Crayon

Marcelle’s Waterproof Lip Definition Crayons are strikingly similar to their Waterproof Eyeliners (yet to be reviewed; I have them swatched and photographed, but haven’t gotten around to it yet). Both feature a rather “sticky” texture, which tugs at the skin as the pencils are applied, but

    Hold up one second.

I’ve just gone and checked the ingredients, and guess what? Marcelle’s Waterproof Lip Definition Crayons aren’t just similar to their Waterproof Eyeliners – they feature the exact same formula, save for the colourants. Turns out, this isn’t all that uncommon in waterproof pencils, either: I’ve only checked two or three other lines so far, but Make Up For Ever is an example of another brand who does it. (Their Aqua Eyes and Aqua Lip liners, that is.)

Well, then! You learn something new every day, don’t you? ;)

Anyhow, back to the product at hand. These lip pencils, like the eye pencils, feature a smooth-but-sticky texture, by which I mean: the product does go on smoothly and without any grittiness or texture inconsistencies, but needs a bit of pressure to get the line going. It’s a heavy pencil, more crayon than buttery khol, and (I warn you now!) might tug or skip a bit.

Where these run into problems with application, though, they make up for it in wear time. They remind me of the GOSH Velvet Touch pencils, if that helps give you a standpoint for texture – similar to UD 24/7 or MUFE Aqua liners, but less smudgy and with better wear time. Once these are on, they’re on.

Swatched L-R: Sienna, Pebble, Perfect Rose, Jewel, Spice, and Nude.

    The verdict?

At $10.50 per pencil, these are a good buy if you’re looking for a really long-wearing lip liner. I do tend to reach for my 2 in 1 Retractable Plumping Lipliners when I’m going for a Marcelle pencil, though; they may not wear as long, but I find them easier to apply. (Plus, I’m a sucker for a creamy matte lip, and the 2 in 1 pencils give a softer effect if used as a lip colour rather than just a liner.)

The only thing I’m not crazy about with regards to the Waterproof Lip Definition Crayons is the colour selection – Marcelle’s products tend to run a little too warm/orange for my colouring, so I don’t get as much wear out of these as I’d like. If you can rock a warm lipcolour, then give the se a go!
