    Revlon Legacy Collection - Icy Violet Super Lustrous Lipstick

    Continuing my accidental trend of embarrassingly delayed posts, here’s a lipstick that I swatched and photographed four years ago, good lord.

    Revlon Icy Violet was first launched in 1946, but is back temporarily as part of the brand’s Legacy Collection. It’s a cool-toned plum (red, brown, and violet tones) with medium opacity and a frosty lavender finish.

    Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Icy Violet

    I have Icy Violet on as I write this, and I have to admit: against my colouring, this lipstick doesn’t look very violet at all. Instead, like most plums, it reads as a neutral colour on me — a little more purple than my natural lips, but in a very subtle way. I don’t love the frost finish (you can see each and every shimmer particle from a foot and a half away), but at “stranger distance,” the effect is very pretty — almost as if my lips are glowingly moist. Up close and in the sun, you can see the ruddy, red-violet base colour and lavender shimmer more distinctly.

    (The shimmer in this is gorgeous: micro-explosions of clear shimmer into bursts of lavender. I wouldn’t be surprised if I spent the next ten years trying to dupe it in an eyeshadow.)

    Revlon Icy Violet swatch - Super Lustrous Lipstick

    Revlon Icy Violet (Legacy Collection) – swatched on skin, lips in indirect sunlight

    Like the rest of the Super Lustrous line, I find Icy Violet to be comfortable but not hydrating, with an average wear time. Its formula and packaging is wonderfully basic while still being rather chic, and I think the range is one that every burgeoning makeup addict should have at least one of. To me, the Super Lustrous line is the quintessential starter lipstick: well-priced and well-made, without any scents or frills. It’s not too much of any one thing, and while I’d love to see a more modern colour selection (more creme finishes, please!), the lipsticks themselves are the perfect place to begin.

    I’ve gone anti-shimmer since buying this, but if you’re situated in the sparkly camp, Icy Violet is at least worth a swatch. It’s not a must-have, but it’s kind of mind-blowing to wear a colour that was formulated 68 years ago.

    These photos are four years old. Please forgive me.

    Fraud at Saffire Blue: What are your worst online shopping horror stories?

    As you all know, I’m not one to complain… very much. When I run into problems behind the scenes at theNotice, 95% of the time, you never hear about it — whether that’s a PR firm who’s upset over a product getting a bad review, or a rep for the company who could stand to learn a few things from Emily Post.

    Over the past few months, though, I’ve been going through one of the most upsetting interactions I’ve ever had with a company. I don’t have any other form of recourse for their behaviour (you can’t Yelp an online store, after all — can you?), so here’s a warning for any of you in Canada who are thinking about buying cosmetic ingredients and packaging from Saffire Blue.

    saffire blue - fraud vs bad business

    I made an order at Saffire Blue this January (just shy of $100), and it arrived in early February. When I opened up the box, however, I found that a number of the items I bought were missing — seven of them, to be precise.

    I contacted the company immediately, and contacted them again a week later when I hadn’t heard back from them. We exchanged a handful of emails, and then, after about a week, the folks at Saffire Blue suddenly stopped responding.

    saffireblueinc

    I called them out on it on Twitter to help speed things up (PayPal’s insurance is time-limited) because the squeaky wheel gets the grease, right? But instead of saying “oops, sorry, we’ll get right on that,”, they instead made public claims saying I had never contacted them, even though their customer service rep had replied to many of my emails, and I have a record of all of them.

    I had paid for the order through PayPal, so I opened up a dispute about the items. Throughout the course of this interaction, their CEO repeatedly stated that they had offered to send me the missing items — a request which I had been making for weeks, and which they had denied each time. Each time I offered to take them up on it, they immediately backtracked and said that they would only reimburse me for the cost of the missing items, and refused to send them out or refund me the cost of shipping for the missing items — a cost which was worth 4x the value of the items, which made up over half of what they charged me for shipping, and which they never had to pass forward to the shipping carrier.

    saffire blue false claims - mission statement

    Sure, I’m raving — but probably not in the way you wanted.

    PayPal has now said that my only form of recourse is to file against them for fraud. I don’t intend to do this over a few dollars’ worth of items, but I did want to get a post on their company out there in the open.

    If you need to buy raw ingredients or packaging materials in Canada, I encourage you to avoid Saffire Blue at all costs. They have a great selection, but their business practices are unhelpful, humiliating, and quite frankly, fraudulent. I’m not saying you should avoid all small retailers (this is the only time I’ve had anything but gold-star service from any online store, big or small!), but remember: even in the business world, you can’t count on everyone to be honest or professional.

    What have your worst experiences with online shopping been? Is there anyone that you’d like to warn us about?

    Annabelle Expandable Mascara Review, Photos, Swatches | Not a gimmick, but a gold mine

    Annabelle Expandable mascara review

    The product: Annabelle Cosmetics Expandable Mascara

    I mentioned taking sixteen months to review a product a couple of weeks ago (this one!), but I’ve been testing Annabelle Expandable for even longer — yes, really, much to my shame.

    I have absolutely no good excuse for why it’s taken me so long to review a product that I’ve had since it was a lab sample in a small, un-labeled black tube, but without further adieu, may I please introduce you to Annabelle Expandable: a drugstore mascara that I’ve loved since the very first time I tried it.

    Annabelle Expandable swatches review photos

    Annabelle Expandable – short and long wand results, no lash comb

    The “gimmick”: What makes the Annabelle Expandable mascara special is that, well, it really is expandable. The wand handle twists at the base, allowing the plastic bristles to expand or contract — not with each bristle getting longer or shorter, but with each bristle getting closer or farther from its neighbour.

    What looks like a gimmick is, in this case, actually really awesome. I love the formula of this mascara, but for those who don’t struggle as much as I do with smudging, this may well be Expandable’s biggest pull. It allows you to have just one mascara that can deliver dramatically different effects: lots of separation and length at the (-) end, or lots of product and volume at the (+) end.

    Annabelle expandable short wand

    Annabelle Expandable mascara – short wand (separation)

    Annabelle expandable long wand

    Annabelle Expandable mascara – long wand (volume)

    The curl and wear: Like most “wet” mascaras (though Expandable isn’t super wet — it’s just not super dry, either), this mascara drops the curl of my lashes only when I apply it. It’s just enough to give them a bit of a droop, so I tend to apply a quick coat or two of mascara, then “push” the lashes toward my face with my fingertip and hold for a few seconds. This helps the lash to set into a nice curl, and once dry, Expandable holds the curl in place for the rest of the day.

    Where Annabelle’s Expandable mascara really excels, though, is in its wear. I get maybe 3-4 hours wear without smudging with your average mascara, but Expandable wears like a champ: I can make it 8 hours without any smudging, and over 10 hours with very minimal smudging. This is the longest-wearing non-tubing mascara that I’ve tried so far, and it comes with a mere $10 price tag.

    Annabelle Expandable mascara – one light coat short wand, second coat short wand, third coat long wand

    Annabelle expandable long wand swatch

    Annabelle Expandable mascara – one heavy coat, long wand

    The verdict?

    Annabelle claims that their Expandable mascara is volumizing, lengthening, anti-clumping, and easy to remove — and you know what? I’d agree with all of these claims.

    Expandable is my go-to mascara for both natural, everyday lashes and high-impact volume (it’s outclassed very slightly for photos by Giorgio Armani’s Eyes to Kill mascara, which is gorgeous but not $30 USD worth of gorgeous), and I would absolutely recommend it to a friend. It gives me both better wear and more believable volume than Le Big Show, and I’ll be frank with you: the awesome, unique wand certainly isn’t doing it any harm.

    5/5 would-buy-again, Annabelle.

    Availability: $10.95 CAD at Annabelle.ca (ships to Canada & the US), or in-store at most major drugstores throughout Canada.

    Marcelle Essentials 400ml

    Marcelle Essentials Cleansing Milk { review | buy }

    Marcelle’s Cleansing Milk was both the first Marcelle product and the first skincare product that I truly fell head over heels for. Sure, there are products that I like more, but so far, I have yet to find anything I love more.

    While not flawless (my skin is still not 100%), this cleansing milk made a huge impact on my skin. Because it doesn’t strip my skin of all of its natural oils, it leaves my face feeling less tight and dry than other cleansers (even other cream cleansers that I’ve tried), and it keeps my skin from overproducing oil during the day.

    Formulated for normal to dry skintypes, it’s also scent-free and sensitive-skin friendly.

     Marcelle Essentials Soothing Cleansing Water review

    Marcelle Essentials Soothing Cleansing Water review | buy }

    If there was one “hit product” in the Marcelle skincare line, I think this one would be it. I’ve gone through an entire bottle (which doesn’t sound like much, but this is literally the only makeup remover I’ve ever finished), and I have two more as backups already.

    Also scent-free and sensitive-skin-friendly, the Essentials Soothing Cleansing Water does an amazing job at removing makeup without leaving your skin greasy or raw. It’s great for removing eyeliner from the waterline, and while it’s not as hydrating as a straight-up oil (and really, why would you even expect it to be?), it removes makeup beautifully and quite gently.

    Marcelle Light to Medium BB cream review

    Marcelle BB Cream (original) review | buy }

    This isn’t a product that I use in my daily makeup repertoire (it’s full of ‘cones), but I tested it out when it launched & loved it so much that I bought a tube for my mom. It’s great at evening out the skin while still looking like skin, and wears well throughout the day.

    Where the Marcelle BB Cream really excels, though, is in covering up large pores. I’m not sure how it does it (magic!), but it makes the pores on my mom’s nose disappear. I basically think that my mom is the prettiest human to ever exist–who doesn’t think that of their mothers, though, really?–but I’m not looking forward to getting her pores when my skin ages!

    Marcelle Face Powder review | buy }

    An oldie but goodie. Marcelle’s Face Powder is a classic, both in its utilitarian packaging and its velvety-soft finish. It holds up well throughout the day, disappears into the skin while giving it a beautiful satin-matte finish, and keeps a pretty short, ‘cone-free ingredients list.

    I’ve had my tub of Marcelle Face Powder for years (at least three, if not four), and I’ve barely made a dent in it despite dropping it all the time. This, along with Marcelle’s original pressed powder (now available as their Monochromatic Pressed Powder ($15.95 CAD)) is all I will use for powder — nothing else measures up!

    IMG_9438-1

    Marcelle Lux Eye Dust in Go-Violet buy }

    Okay, so this one is kind of cheating. It’s not one of my must-haves, but I posted about Annabelle’s Violet Vibe pigment many years ago, and it apparently resonated with a lot of you! I still have readers writing in and telling me that they bought Violet Vibe, and think of theNotice every time they use it.

    Go-Violet is essentially the same as Violet Vibe, but I’m recommending it as an upgrade for one simple reason: the packaging is a lot better. And, with 40% off, you have no reason not to buy the slightly more expensive but far better-packaged version!

    Marcelle Lux Diamond Eyeliner in Pure Gold see itbuy }

    I don’t even have odes left to talk about this one, I write about it so much. Marcelle’s Lux Diamond liners are the same as the Annabelle Glitterama liners that I love, but the Annabelle ones don’t come in this beautiful, beautiful gold. It’s perfect during the holidays, for a dinner date, for an effortless summer evening eye — I could even see excelling at office wear.

    It’s beautiful, beautifully packaged, and beautifully subtle. There’s nothing not to love.

    Marcelle Lux Metallic, Diamond liquid liners glitter

    Marcelle Lux Metallic Eyeliners review | buy }

    Finally, I wanted to wrap up with Marcelle’s Lux Metallic Eyeliners. Housed in the same packaging as their Diamond counterparts, the Lux Metallic liquid liners are quite unique: they deliver translucent metallic colour, for a very interesting, almost watercolour effect. They can be layered for more impact, but they hold up well, and make it easy to create an ombré effect from one liner to the next, as well.

    My Annabelle favourites & must-haves (Marcelle to come tomorrow!)

    Annabelle Glitterama Eyeliners. All of them. review/posts | buy }

    These were one of my first loves from Annabelle. They take a while to dry (don’t all glitter liners?), but once they’re on, they’re on. Annabelle offers a wonderful selection of glitters suspended in a clear gel, but my favourite is still my first — Plutonium.

    Annabelle Smoothie Eyeshadow Pencil in Licoriche review | buy }

    My skin’s really picky about high amounts of silicone, but I still cheat in the morning & do my brows with a tiny, tiny bit of black eyeliner. This pencil is my go-to for a black cream base, tightlining, and the tightline-followed-by-brow-filling (without picking up new product) that I do every morning.

    With my super-picky eyelids, I wasn’t a fan of these on my lids as shadows. They’re exact dupes of Urban Decay’s jumbo 24/7 pencil formula, though, so here are photos and swatches of some of their (rather lovely) neutrals if you’re interested!

    Annabelle Liquid Eyeliner in Black Spark review | buy }

    Like their glitter liners, this liquid liner never budges once it’s set. I have the most finicky eyelids I’ve ever even heard of, but this (like Lancome’s much pricier 24hr Artliners) clings to my lids until I wash it off with warm water at the end of the day — at which point it comes off neatly in little “pills,” sort of like a tubing mascara would.

    I’m pretty sure I remember the matte Black Out smudging on me back in the day, so stick to Black Spark if you want a sure thing.

     Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Lipstick review

    Annabelle TwistUp Retractable Lipsticks review | buy }

    When I signed up to swatch all 24 of these in a month, I kind of freaked out. Now that it’s over, though, I’m pretty proud of how the series of photos turned out, and I’m incredibly glad that I did it.

    The Annabelle TwistUps are portable, easy to apply, and scent-free (which is a big thing for me). Ranging from immediately opaque to sheer and shimmery, the range quite literally offers something for everyone — check out face swatches, arm swatches, and my full shade recommendations here.

    In a nutshell, the two shades that really wowed me were Naked and Cherry. That said, though, I also really liked Fizz, Sorbet, and Kinky Pink!

    Annabelle expandable short wand

    Annabelle Expandable mascara { review to come | buy }

    With its long-wearing (but easy to remove) formula and long-or-short wand, Annabelle’s Expandable mascara hits it out of the park for more than one kind of lash. Its twist-to-collapse bristles deliver product for either length or volume (or, in the middle, a bit of both), and it totally trounces Le Big Show for me.

    I love this (on its shortest setting) for really voluminous but natural-looking lashes, but I do think it’ll be a big hit with those who like to wear a more noticeable mascara, too.

    Giovanni 2chic Brazilian Keratin & Argan Oil Ultra-Sleek Super Potion serum review, in three takes

    Giovanni Ultra Sleek Super Potion serum review

    The product: Giovanni 2chic Brazilian Keratin & Argan Oil Ultra-Sleek Hair & Body Super Potion

    This serum landed on my desk over a year ago, and after writing three variations of this review, I think I’m finally ready to publish a post about it.

    I had tried Giovanni’s Keratin & Argan Oil Serum initially as a serum on my long, straight hair, and quite frankly, it was kind of gross. A year after that, I decided it was time to transition this guy’s routine into a silicone-free one (what? He was breaking me out!), and out came this serum for its triumphant, great-for-curly-hair return. And now, upon my third attempt at testing this, I can finally say it’s great for one more thing: soothing a chronically dry scalp.

    Giovanni 2chic keratin argan serum review

    The “this makes curly hair so attractive I get light-headed” approach

    You think I’m joking, but seriously, I’m not joking. Giovanni’s Ultra-Sleek serum did nothing for my dry, straight hair except make it feel kind of gross and heavy, but on curly hair, it works wonders.

    M was blessed with the kind of hair all girls want (full, curly, and naturally dark blonde with highlights), but it needs a little prep work, sometimes. It gets fussy if he blow dries it, and poofs a little if there’s nothing in it, but all in all — pretty standout hair.

    So I’ve always adored M’s hair, but good lord, the things this serum does to it. He works a tiny amount of the Ultra-Sleek serum into his hair–you really have to work it in there–and suddenly, it’s all curls! definition! glossiness!, like he’s rolled out of bed and onto the gently-tousled centre spread of a naughty glossy magazine. It takes all the guesswork and skill out of styling curly hair, which is something I think we could all use, you know?

    (Don’t lie, you totally do. Rolling out of bed with model hair is every girl–and probably guy’s–dream.)

    Giovanni berazilian keratin argan oil review - serum potion

    Giovanni Argan and Keratin Super Potion serum review

    But it’s great on the scalp, too

    he Brazillian Keratin & Argan Oil 2chic serum is enriched with all sorts of good-for-your hair ingredients, and it makes for a smooth, hydrating finished product — it’s a rich, thin, nutty-smelling oil. You have to be careful not to use too much, but if worked in well, this is a product that doesn’t need to be re-activated or re-styled day after day.

    I have one of those finicky scalps that gets super tight after I shower, no matter how hydrating my shampoo and conditioner are, but gets oily through the day — and, if left unattended, flakes like crazy along the hairline. I thought I had dandruff for years before realizing that the flakes weren’t characteristic of dandruff at all, and that they only appeared around my face… where, coincidentally, my skin also flakes and peels if left un-moisturized.

    Long story short: used sparingly while your hair is wet, a little bit of Giovanni Ultra-Sleek massaged into the scalp really helps comfort and hydrate dry patches without adding too much weight to the hair. It’s not a permanent fix, but it’s certainly more hair-friendly than facial moisturizers!

    Giovanni ultra-sleek super potion review

    The verdict?

    It took me sixteen months to review this product, but I couldn’t be happier that I waited. Had I reviewed it promptly, you would have gotten an entirely inaccurate view of the product: I would have told you that, for a serum, it seemed kind of dry-heavy… and kind of gross.

    But patience has its rewards, and I can paint you a very different picture of Giovanni’s 2chic Brazilian Keratin & Argan Oil Ultra-Sleek Serum today. It’s amazing for curly hair (especially short curly hair), great for moisturizing the scalp, and touts a nutty scent alongside top-notch packaging. I actually did a double-take when I saw how much this was — I had expected something close to $20, not $8!

    While NOT suited for fine hair, this serum has really knocked my socks off. It’s an amazing buy for the price, and despite being formulated entirely from natural and organic ingredients, it outperforms any silicone-based haircare products I’ve tried for dry scalps and thick, curly hair.

    Availability: $7.99 USD/$8.99 CAD/£8.99. See the full list of retailers here — it’s very long, so you have absolutely no excuse not to give this a try!

    Punk Rock + Sepia Tones | A Marc Jacobs/NARS-inspired makeup look… twelve months late

    !Sepia toned makeup, eyeshadow tutorial

    Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve done a full makeup look and posted it? Months. Seasons. The last two were in April and May of last year.

    Despite what the wait may have led you to believe, here’s a makeup look that I actually really loved. I shot it a year ago to the day, so I barely remember applying it, but I do remember being inordinately fond of the entire thing. It’s loosely inspired by the makeup created by François Nars for the Fall 2013 Marc Jacobs show — messy, smokey, a little punk rock.

    I hope you like it as much as I do.

    !Marc Jacobs, NARS Sepia toned punk rock makeup

    I literally don’t remember putting this eye makeup on, but looking back, I do really love the way it turned out — smoked-out black with eye open, and a flash of a toned-down burnt orange with eyes shut. The “sepia” shade is Clinique Fuller Fudge (a Chubby Stick for Eyes), and the black is the soft charcoal-black from Clarins’ Graphites Eye Quartet.

    The other three products listed at the bottom of the page are just your standard window dressing: MAC Blanc Type, still my go-to matte highlight, and Annabelle Licoriche softly through and along the upper lashline (and, okay, with the dregs then pulled through my brows — multi-tasking, man). On my lashes is Armani’s Eyes to Kill mascara, which I’m still reaching for whenever I want a super-pretty, voluminous, clump-free lash with no fuss.

    !Marc Jacobs eye tutorial !Soft punk makeup look

    For the base, I used theBalm timeBalm Concealer in Lighter Than Light and Marcelle Face Powder in Translucent — always, always, with these two. I really should try something new, but it’s hard, you know? Especially when you feel like the only cool-toned, too-pale, vaguely-olive person out there who can’t come within arm’s reach of anything containing ‘cones. I hear Marcelle’s Monochromatic Pressed Powder is ‘cone-free, so maybe that’ll be my next powder to try — though I did really want to try something glowy.

    On the cheeks, I’m wearing MAC Harmony (much warmer than my usual fare), and on my lips is Clinique Curviest Caramel — a Chubby Stick (Intense), of course.
