Thierry Mugler beauty: "The Art of Metamorphosis"

Were you aware that Thierry Mugler had a beauty line? Because I was not. Not even a little. I hadn’t the tiniest inkling… until yesterday night, right before closing time, when I practically bumped into a Mulger cosmetics display! Thankfully, I had my camera on me, so I took a couple quick shots and made a little swatch sheet of the lip products.

The Plexi Glosses are what made me stop and go back; the finish is very vinyl and very duochrome. Not to mention, the packaging is just so… Thierry, from the shape of the tube to the strange silicone applicator — rather than just being a silicone spatula (which are rare enough as it is nowadays,) it’s a thick silicone spatula with curved edges, like a little canoe paddle. But I have to say; the strangest product was actually the Magma Explosion Glitter Lip Wax, a stiff waxy solid which leaves behind gold leaf flakes on the lips (or skin.)

From left to right: Magma Explosion Glitter Lip Wax; Plexi Glosses in Blue Effect, Pink Effect, and Coral Effect; Rouge Unique in Heart and …Thunder? Not too sure about that last one :/

So, will you be hunting down — or have you already tried out — the Mugler line? I’m definitely intrigued, and will be checking out the line in depth the next time I’m at The Bay. It’s quite pricey, though (the glosses, for instance, are $40US,) so I doubt I’ll be picking anything up!

Oh, how I want to channel Chanel!

Spring 2010 couture. Though I wasn’t the biggest fan of all of the clothes (loved the silver, didn’t love the matching suits,) I just adored the hair and makeup! The coral lippie is to die for, and I’m actually so intrigued by the platinum blue-grey hilights so much that I’m tempted to have some put in for myself.

Sailing off with Voile de Rose

So remember a week or two ago, when I fell in love with Lancome’s Voile de Rose, after seeing Temptalias swatches? (below) Well, unable to allow myself to spend $35 on a lippie I knew I’d just wear for a season… I decided it was time to dupe it.The first time, the lip swatches came out just terribly. However, the arm swatch follows! It does appear more peach than Voile, but due to the fact that it’s mainly gloss-based, it’s less opaque (meaning the pink tones in your lips come through more.) This one consisted of Lancome’s Aplum blush patted over MAC’s Fresco Cream Colour Base, and topped with Stila’s Vanilla lip glaze.

The second time I tried to dupe this lip, I had a lot more success, both with the resulting colour and with the photographs! I figured what the hey, I may as well try to dupe a Lancome lip with, well, more Lancome. So I layered just two things this time, Petticoat Pink (a cream blush) and Floralesque (a shimmery peachy-pink shadow.) I definitely didn’t come too close to the creamy gorgeousness of Voile de Rose, but it’s close enough to keep me happy!

(The combination did prove to be drying, though, so I ended up topping with some clear gloss. The colour accuracy of the photo below, by the way, is much better than the accuracy of the photo above.)

    Just smashing

Smashbox Smashing Mystic jumbo eye pencil, one that shows up a lot in my EOTDs. I don’t understand why they had to discontinue this beauty! It’s gorgeous, portable, easy to use… my only complaint is that, as a base, it can sometimes make it a bit hard to blend other colours. But man, does it ever make them pop! I’m still searching for that perfect violet liner, though — while pretty, this is certainly more of a brown-plum than a true, vibrant violet.

Least creative title ever: Tom’s of Maine deodorant stick review!

What it is: Tom’s of Maine‘s original care deodorant stick; mine’s Honeysuckle Rose.

What you need to know about deodorant: First of all, it isn’t supposed to stop you from sweating! Deodorant is made to stop you from smelling; it’s antiperspirant that stops your pores from releasing sweat. The reason why many deodorant users choose deodorant over antiperspirant is that they don’t contain aluminium, making them a good choice for those worried about the breast cancer/antiperspirant links. There are a number of types; waxy solids like this one, dusting powders, even rock-based sprays and solids. (Which I personally don’t like — wetting a rock and then smothering your ‘pits with them just feels gross! They can also be quite messy, and are very much a no-frills product.)

Why I love Tom’s: Honestly, I’ve never used any other company’s deodorant, so I can’t compare it. However, I do like that the solid stays solid, even in the summer, so it’s never mushy when you apply it. I love that the waxy solid of deodorant doesn’t leave white markson your clothing, and that it’s effective in stopping scents even before they start. Honeysuckle Rose smells incredible when you apply it (very natural, light, and fresh,) but the scent fades within about a minute — so you stay scent-free all day.

(As a side note: I’ve also tried the unscented version, which smells a little gross but whose sent fades after about a minute as well. It comes in four scents; the other two are calendula and woodspice, neither of which I care for.)

The verdict? For about $5, I quite like these, hence the fact that I’ve never tried anything else! So I encourage you to try a waxy deodorant if you’re interested in covering up scents but want to stay away from aluminium — it doesn’t necessarily have to be Tom’s, though ;) Check your local health foods aisle, or the personal care aisle in your Whole Foods-esque store if you have one.

A very well priced kit, if you ask me

I rarely-if-ever post anything that I read from press releases — you know that by now. Launches and hype are just very much not my thing. But… I do tend to post information about the things I would personally get, if I wasn’t on this darn no-buy. So: LUSH.In their Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes kit, you get small sizes of nine customizable items for only $25… which if you ask me is one hell of a deal :P Learn more behind the cut.

For the head, you get to choose a face mask (in-store) or cleanser (online,) plus you’ll get a Vitamin C toner tab, a 0.35oz sample of any moisturiser, and any full-sized shampoo bar.

For your “shoulders/knees (and in between)” you’ll get a 0.5oz sample of Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter, a sample of Handy Gurugu, a mini Each Peach massage bar, and a 45g mini Sugar Scrub.

For your toes, you get a 0.5oz sample of LUSH’s Fair Trade Foot Lotion.
And to top it all off, if you bring in your empty pot of any of these items, you get 15% off the full size equivalent until the end of April. A good deal? Oh yes, I think so ^^ Now one of you ladies needs to go indulge and tell me all about it, because I can’t!!

    Honestly:

this guy is the most talented person I’ve seen in a long time. Or possibly ever. I mean, I know I’ve always planned to have a girl when I’m old and ready for babies… but if I have a boy, can he please be just like him? Please???

    Gingerbread Crêpes

Yes — we’ve successfully improved crêpes. Who even knew it was possible?! I found this recipe during the holidays and have been fine-tuning it ever since. I think I can officially say that it’s finally perfect! I write my recipes a little differently from the rest of the world, so if you do use them, let me know how it goes ;) So far, everyone who I’ve baked with loves the format!

Or they’re too afraid of me to tell me it’s awful. Which is very likely, because I absolutely adore the way I write out my recipes, and… somehow, a 5’2″ Rae can be frightening. The recipes look quite different in person, but I can’t replicate the strange flowchartyness in Blogger — perhaps I should just photograph them as well. Hmm.

    theNotice’s Gingerbread Crêpes

Combine in a large bowl, make sure there are NO clumps:

    • 1c white flour
    • 1t cinnamon
    • 1/4t ginger powder
    • 1/4t salt
    • 1/4t nutmeg

Whisk together in a medium-sized bowl:

    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • 1/2c 2% milk
    • 1/2c water
    • 1t molasses
    • 2T melted butter
    • 1t vanilla

Pour the wet into the dry and whisk until smooth. Butter your pans, let them heat up, and make some crêpes! Serve with, well, anything. I prefer pure maple syrup on mine, my sister loves a light layer of melted butter (I’d go with unsalted,) and mother adores apple sauce. Whipping cream, melted chocolate, and ice cream are all wonderful as well ;)

Note: these fare very well in the refrigerator; just pop them in the microwave or back on the stove and the’ll reheat almost as if they were fresh!

    Grey-violet EOTD

Just a couple quick photos :) No full face shots, because I only did one eye — it was the end of a long day and I felt the need to play with makeup! Still trying to figure out the XSi and it is… not going as well as could be desired.

    How-to:

Prep eyes. (Fill brows, conceal any veins on your lids, apply primer.) Using a flat shader brush, lightly smoke out the outer 2/3 of your eye with a violet-grey shadow. Clean the brush thoroughly or switch brushes to apply a light shimmery violet on the inner 1/3; blend into the grey. Using a fluffy brush, work a vibrant violet into the violet-grey to emphasise the… violetness.

Tightly line lower lashline with a dark violet cream shadow or liner. To emphasise the violet here, smoke out this line using the vibrant violet on an angled or straight, flat liner brush.

Add more light, shimmery violet to the inner V to emphasise, using the flat shader brush. Crimp lashes, apply a creamy black liner to the waterlines and to the upper lashine, then finish with a light coat of mascara.

Edit: excuse my French, but faaaaaaack. I just realized that I colour-balanced with f.lux on AGAIN. Putain!

And then I added some glitter liner (which totally comes off like glue, whee!)

    Used:

    Etude House Proof 10 primer
    TheBalm TimeBalm concealer

    Alima Lilac (the grey-violet)
    MUFE 92 (the vibrant violet)
Lancome Angora (the light, shimmery violet)

Smashbox Smashing Mystic jumbo pencil (the creamy darker violet liner)
MUFE Aqua Eyes eyeliner (the creamy black liner)
    Fresh Supernova mascara
    Annabelle Plutonium Glitterama liner
