    The Cup Reviews: instead Softcup

For a bit of background information on menstrual cups, read this post.
    Oh, and also:
TMI alert! TMI alert! Alert alert alert!

What it is: instead Softcup disposable menstrual cups

    What we love

    • The Softcup is a lot less icky than other menstrual cups! There’s no washing/scrubbing/boiling involved, and removal is quick, painless, and relatively clean. It takes a bit of practice, but I can get it out with just a bit of blood ending up on my fingertips; no messier than a tampon.
    • It’s also a lot easier to get in (and out) than other cups — you pinch the two sides and insert it like a tampon. The pink plastic is very malleable, so they really do pinch right together. It’s no harder to get in than a regular tampon (and way easier than supers and extra supers!)
    • There are a bunch of “side benefits” that come along with using this kind of cup. For starters, there are no strings attached, literally! Nothing… hanging out of you. (Ahem.) And while I can’t vouch for it, they do say you can wear the Softcup during sex while you’re on your period for less, erm, mess.
    • The Softcup can be worn for up to 12 hours, unlike tampons (which run 4-8 if I’m not mistaken.) Of course, I have to change mine more often, but my lighter-flow friends (aka every single !@)#!@$ person I know; it’s just not fair!) should be fine.

    What we don’t

    • These cups are one-size-fits-all, and unfortunately… we’re not all the same size down there. I found it to be a touch too long for me; it slips too low every now and again and can be hard to get all the way in. So, make sure to sample them first! If they fit, you’ll know: when they’re in properly, you can’t feel the cup at all.

    Tips and tricks
As I’ve mentioned, I find inserting the Softcup to be a breeze. It’s awkward the first time, but the process is just so easy to get the hang of. Anyone who can insert a tampon should be fine! (And to be honest, it’s easier to insert a Softcup than it is to insert an extra super tampon, or anything by OB…)

However, I know not everyone is as utilitarian about their female reproductive system comfortable with their ladybits as I am. So I asked Tracey Croughwell (Evofem’s Marketing VP) if she had any tips of her own! She had a ton of incredibly helpful ones to share, so here are a few of them:

    • To insert the Softcup, sit on a toilet and relax. Compress the Softcup, then push it into the vagina. Push it back, not up. You should feel the Softcup go past your pubic bone, and when it’s in place it will be tucked up behind the pubic bone. Once it’s inserted correctly, you won’t feel it.

    • If you can feel the Softcup, it probably is not in place. Simply remove it and try again. To remove it, insert your finger into your vagina. When you bear down with your muscles (like you’re pushing out a baby), the rim will come down and be easier to hook your finger around. Hook your finger around and gently pull it out.

    • When removing the Softcup, remove it slowly and keep it horizontal (so it’s less messy).

    • Removing the Softcup will be messy at first. You’ll eventually get used to taking it out, and the whole insertion/removal process will become quicker, easier, and less messy… and it’s totally worth the freedom and comfort you experience with the Softcup!

Psst — did you notice the “How-To” tab at the top of the Sofcup site? Definitely worth checking out if you’re not sure how to go about using your cup!

    Other things to note

    • The Softcup is just over $10 for 24, but the samples are available for $2.50.
    • Because they’re non-absorbant, the Softcup doesn’t cause irritation or dryness. I mean, don’t get me wrong; I love tampons just as much as the next gal (most days)… but there’s nothing worse than inserting a tampon when the last one wasn’t totally soaked!
    • For the same reason, menstrual cups aren’t associated with TSS. And on a health-related note, they’re also free of things like bleach (used to get your tampons that clean-looking white-white,) and latex.

One last thing: we decided to do this review in point-form, just because there was so much information we wanted to share. (And we didn’t want to force you to read three and half hours of text!) If there’s anything we missed, though, don’t hesitate to ask questions in the comments :)

    P.S. Purple packaging? We approve!

    EOTD: Graphic floral

Not much to say today other than “blame the readings.” Seriously; there are so many of them! I have the sneaking suspicion that my Sociology prof is A) totally crazy, B) totally brilliant, and/or C) secretly trying to teach the course as if it was a FemLit class, rather than a general Soc one.

So, instead of a tutorial, today you will get a simple statement: Marcelle’s Lux Metallic eyeliners blend and layer like whoa! I love how insanely easy it is to create an ombre effect with them.

Wait! I lied (again.) I actually have two more things to say — it was incredibly difficult to intensify the pinky-violet, and even harder to keep the distinct separation of the blue and pink/violet/whatever the heck you want to call it. I really like the final effect, but I don’t know… Purple Haze isn’t exactly in my “good books” right now.

More photos, a “products used,” and some dupe suggestions behind the cut!

And one more not-so-great photo, to show off that awesome ombre:

    Products used:

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk

MAC Eye Shadow in Blanc Type

MAC Eye Shadow in Gorgeous Gold (LE in Delights)
Annabelle Mono Eye Shadow in B-Ray (disc)
Annabelle Mineral Pigment in Tidal (LE)
Urban Decay Eye Ehadow in Purple Haze

And if you’d rather try to dupe it:
I’ve heard that Revlon Vintage Lace (bottom left) is a great replacement for MAC Blanc Type, and Riviera Blue is as close to B-Ray as you’re going to get! Plus, everyone keeps raving about Illamasqua mattes… perhaps they’re more impressive than Urban Decay’s were?

    Our third birthday

I just realized that theNotice turns three today. I was going to have an epic post; all the things we’ve loved and all the things we’ve learned. But all I can come up with is “holy cripes; three years is a long time.” I feel old!

Today’s mid-morning snack was unintentionally appropriate: a banana sundae, minus the ice cream. Healthy(ish,) tasty, and celebratory!
We’ve met an incredible number of amazing ladies (and men,) tried out some really awesome products (and some not-so-awesome ones,) developed our writing style (albeit at a painfully slow pace…)
So yah, it’s been worth it. Posting every day, hauling our arses my arse (why is it so hard for me to stay in the singular?!) out of armchairs and onto computer chairs, countless hours of photo-taking, product testing, and writing, writing, writing. And I’ve loved every moment of it; I absolutely love it.

Well. Happy third birthday, my dear blog :) And a huge thank you to all of our wonderful readers; you ladies really make blogging worth it!

    New at… Sephora

Of course, the “New at…” posts just can’t stop. Why not, you ask? Well, makeup companies just won’t slow it down with those new releases!

But hey, we’re not complaining ;)

Remember: you can get to the product pages of any of these items just by clicking on the images! Even the ones in little collage-like spreads.

To start us off, a confession: the copious numbers of sets coming out kind of freak me out. I mean, Christmas shopping?! We must start Christmas shopping already!!?!

    ShopStyle

What’s definitely freaking me out less (and making me way more curious,) though, are the new Sephora Favorites sets.

    Sephora, Sephora, Sephora, Sephora
    ShopStyle

There’s a new Lancome foundation that has me getting all curious as well, but I’m sure it (sigh) has ‘cones.

And a few new lipsticks Sephora will be carrying. It’s a good time to be a lipstick, apparently, and I couldn’t be more happy about it. Call me old-fashioned, but I love me a good lipstick!

Ooh, and have you seen the new Tokidoki quad? Finally, one that I can get behind! All that wonderful violet…

Lastly: Sephora doesn’t have the floor space to sell Cargo anymore, but they can find the space for a mascara with a “fierce panther head”? Perhaps this should have been a “Things That Scare Me” post.

Fresh Firebird mascara won’t make your lashes rise like a phoenix.

What it is: Fresh Firebird mascara

Firstly: can you believe how phenomenally long it took me to get this post up? I took the photos a few days after taking them for Fresh Supernova, the other mascara in the Magic Wands duo (review here.) And yet, somehow, my massive procrastination managed to get the better of me…

The lash: one coat, two coats, three — no matter how many you put on, Firebird maintains a very soft, feathery look. When I say “soft,” I mean it in two ways: not only do my lashes look soft and natural, they feel soft and natural, too. Those seeing false-lash-like drama should look elsewhere, but ladies who seek a “my lashes but better” look (like me) will definitely fall for this effect! I’m not sure if it’s from the formula or from the brush, but I’m hoping for the latter. Why? Stop asking questions and read on; I’m about to tell you why!

The catch…es: Firebird’s formula totally takes the curl out of my lashes. Normally, I can “set” the lash in a curl, even with the wettest mascaras — but with Firebird, the curl just won’t stay. It doesn’t straighten my lashes completely, but just one coat takes out about 80% of the curl! And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, Firebird smudges like mad below my eyes (though, most mascaras do on me,) and it’s not as dark as I’d like it to be. I like a really black, patent effect, but this finish is matte and a little charcoal-y.

    Ingredients:

WATER (AQUA), IRON OXIDES (CI 77499), GLYCERYL STEARATE, POLYBUTENE, C18-36 ACID TRIGLYCERIDE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX, CETYL PALMITATE, PVP, STEARETH-21, PALMITIC ACID, STEARIC ACID, VP/EICOSENE COPOLYMER, COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, NYLON-12, PANTHENOL, PENTYLENE GLYCOL, HIPPOPHAE RHAMNOIDES OIL, HYDROLYZED RHODOPHYCEA EXTRACT, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) LEAF EXTRACT, STEARETH-2, PHENOXYETHANOL, AMINOMETHYL PROPANEDIOL, HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE

The verdict? I don’t say this often, because at least from my point of view, most products will work for someone… but I just can’t recommend this one. The price ($26 US) is way too high, and while my lashes look gorgeously feathery, the curl is out by noon. Not to mention, half the product’s smudged under my eyes by then!

    Try it only if…

    • You’re going to be layering it. I do love Firebird under tubing mascara, because the final look makes my lashes look ah-mazing — you get the full, feathery lash from Firebird, and the glossy, black-black, curled, non-smudging finish of the tubing mascara. But for the effort, it’s just not worth it!

Availability: I’m not sure why you’d want to buy Firebird after a review like this one, but hey — be my guest! Mascaras are a very personal thing, so if Firebird works for you, I hate you I’m insanely jealous more power to you.

but it’s so pretty before the curl droops! *bursts into tears*

No Old Bags Allowed: but will Anatomicals keep them away?

The product: Anatomicals No Old Bags Allowed Eye Gel

Hold your horses: I know the first reaction a few of you will have to this review is “Rae’s not qualified to review eye gels! She’s like, ten freakin’ years old!” Well, I’m certainly not ten anymore, and many sleepless nights have given me some pretty major bags over the past few months. (Weekly all-nighters? Yeah, they’ll mess your skin up pretty badly. Not recommended!)

I’ve tried a few eye gels and cremes before, but so far I still look like a bit of a zombie.

The product: No Old Bags Allowed has a light liquid-gel consistency. It sinks in very quickly, you don’t have to use a lot, and it dries to a blissfully non-sticky finish. (Ever use an eye gel that left your undereyes kind of… tacky? Nice, it is not.) It does list perfume as the last ingredient, which I found a bit concerning at first — but the scent is super-light and dissipates almost immediately. (And more importantly, my super-sensitive eyes didn’t protest.)

    The ingredients: (‘cone-free and paraben-free!)

But does it work? To a degree, I think it does. It’s not the holy grail of eye gels (if such a thing exists, it’s still hiding from me,) but especially for the price, I don’t by any means regret trying it. It won’t make bags disappear, but it seems to help “tighten” the eye area and make me look just a touch less tired, if that makes sense.

The verdict? I don’t think it’s leaps and bounds better than other eye gels I’ve tried, but it’s also no worse — and the ones that I have tried so far (The Body ShopBenefit, and Bliss,) have all cost a ton more! At just $4/£3 for 15ml, this cheeky tube of eye gel is definitely worth the pocket change. It’s a fairly simple eye gel, so don’t go in expecting a miracle — but it definitely does its job, particularly for the price.

Burt’s Bees Nutmeg — surprisingly pretty!

What it is: Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in Nutmeg.

The wear: As expected, this wears like a nice, light lip balm. The colour is sheer, lasting 2-3 hours, and you get the expected refreshing, pepperminty tingle when you apply or reapply. It’s on the moisturizing side, but slightly less so than the original Burt’s balm — for a tinted lip balm, it’s pretty moisturizing, but if you were hoping to use it in place of your normal lip balm, you might need a little more oomph.

Then again, I do expect a lot out of my lip balms! This is just as moisturizing as, say, a ChapStick or tube of Nivea, but those with dry lips would need to either layer this or use something a little more moisturizing in the night. If you have normal lips, though, I think you’d be totally fine with a Lip Shimmer on it’s own.

The vibe: I didn’t swatch Nutmeg for months. Literally: the poor thing just sat in a box. Unloved and alone. Cold. Terrified. Desola–
Erm, anyhow, it looked like it wouldn’t be my thing, y’know? About a week ago, though, while procrastinating some readings out of sheer boredom, I gave it a swatch…
…and immediately thought of NARS Orgasm. Peachy-pink base with gold microshimmer? Ding ding ding! Hey there! It’s a darker and more peach (less pink,) but they definitely have the same vibe. I mean, they’re not dupes, so don’t plan on smudging this one one cheek and buffing Orgasm onto the other*, but one is definitely reminiscent of the other!
*please never do this. I can’t imagine how icky it would be! Lipstick as blush, yes. But lip balm? Not recommended — you’d need so much for a tint that it would feel like a gross mess :/
Orgasm vs Nutmeg. They’re certainly not dupes, but I hope you know what I mean when I say they have a similar vibe!
On a side note: consistency FAIL! I really should have taken all of my swatch photographs on the same day…

The ingredients:

Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cera alba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), candelilla cera (euphorbia cerifera, cire de candelilla) wax, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, lanolin, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, cera carnauba (copernicia cerifera, cire de carnauba) wax, tocopherol, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil (huile de colza), limonene.
May contain+/-: CI 77491/77492/77499 (iron oxides), mica, CI 77891 (titanium dioxide), CI 75470 (carmine), CI 778161(tin oxide).

Try it if:

  • You’re a NARS Orgasm fan! (I am; I’ll admit it.) Or if you’re a fan of other medium-toned peachy to peachy-pink shades ;)
  • You’re neutral, warm, or cool-toned. Like with Orgasm, this would really work on anyone — sure, the shimmer’s gold, but it’s very finely milled and is on top of a very versatile base!
  • Like I do, you love finely milled shimmer. I hate anything encroaching on “glitter” when it comes to my lips, and this is just perfection.

Skip it if:

The verdict? I really liked Nutmeg, in the end. I don’t love it so much that I’d wear it every! single! day!, but it’s definitely worth the meagre price tag of just $5 US ($6 CAD.) It’s not dramatic by any means, but in the stead of a normal lip balm, it’s quite pretty and easy to wear — you’ll never have to worry about matching it to your makeup, or staying in your lip lines!

Remember how I was disappointed by Burts’ Super Glossy line, because it wasn’t… glossy? Well, this is exactly what you think it’ll be, and it does a darn good job of fulfilling its role. As they say, “a kiss of colour and pearlised shine add a hint of glamour to our world famous lip balm”!

Availability: Well.ca, drugstore.com, Ulta, Macy’s. (Yes, I just said Macy’s. Why they  carry this, I do not know. But they do!)

FOTD: dark lips and taupe eyes

Oh Mr Sunshine, I haven’t seen you in days. Oh Mr Sunshine, I wish you would stay for just a touch longer. Oh Mr Sunshine, where on earth did you go?!

Obviously, things in my neck of the woods have taken a very sudden and fairly drastic turn for the worse colder. It drizzles over half the time, and when it isn’t drizzling, it’s pouring. There’s a constant ominous cloud cover, and the mercury dropped a good ten degrees (Celsius) in just a week.

I know Autumn happens every year, but it never fails to catch me off guard. Suddenly, there’s only a few  hours each week to photograph makeup; only a few hours each week to go for walks or see the sun at all! It does serve as an excuse to go a little more dramatic with the makeup, though, which we do so adore…

Read on too see what I used, and for more photos (including what this looks like with an easier-to-wear glossy lip!)
The eye:

Full face, matte lips:

The lip:

Tip: when it comes to darks, glossier lips can be easier to wear than mattes… but it all depends! If you have a hydrating matte lipstick that you love (or an amazing lip balm that you adore to wear underneath,) you should be all set. But if you don’t, drier lips might not like matte finishes.

Glossy lips can also help add the illusion of fullness and minimize the look of lip lines, too! And, a lot of the time, they can look much less harsh. If you’re afraid of going dark, try something sheer and glossy, like Clinique’s Black Honey, or Crushed Grape.

Full face, slightly glossed lips:

Products used:

Bobbi Brown lip balm SPF 15

Hope you liked the look! As I’m sure you know by now, I’m a huge fan of autumn makeup — so I definitely did ;)
