    A super-quick, “no makeup” eye | More on MAC Teddy

    Thought I’d share a few photos after yesterday’s MAC Teddy review – because yes, even though the wear time is awful on me (even when layered over primer and under shadow), it *is* gorgeous!

    The only products used in this quick, easy eye look were the Teddy Eye Khol (obviously) smudged along the upper and lower lashlines, Marcelle Ultimate Lash mascara, theBalm timeBalm, and Boots No. 7 Radiant Glow concealer (a Touche Éclat dupe). I really do adore how easily Teddy can create a more polished eye, but – well, if it’s going to crease and fade within the hour, the whole “polished” aspect goes downhill pretty fast.

    We were never meant to be | MAC Teddy Eye Kohl review

    The product: MAC Teddy Eye Kohl

    The shade: Well, this would be the reason why so many others are in love with Teddy, and why I want to be as well. It’s just – I suppose when you get down to it, it’s “just” brown, but it’s a particularly breathtaking brown, you know? It’s a lovely, warm shade; the perfect intensity given even more depth with a smattering of really finely-milled gold shimmer.

    The texture: And here’s the catch. While the soft, smooth texture of MAC’s eyeliners make them a breeze to apply, I feel like it might be the reason why they move around so damn much on my lids. I can’t get more than an hour or two of wear out of Teddy, and even less on the waterline (a half-hour, tops, before it’s completely gone).

    For me, it’s a total dealbreaker – even if I set with powder and layer a primer underneath, I just can’t get Teddy to stick around!

    MAC Teddy swatched in indirect setting sunlight, without / with flash.

    Makes me think of…

    • Ellis Faas Creamy Eyes E104 {review}
    • Ulta Eye Shadow Molten {review}

    The verdict?

    If you’re one of the lucky few who don’t have to deal with migrating eyeliner (that is – if you haven’t hooded eyes or monolids), don’t let this gorgeous shade pass you by. If travelling liner’s a worry for you, though, give it a skip!

    And then I made an apple-rhubarb crisp and it was tasty, too

    So I really did enjoy yesterday night’s strawberry-rhubarb crumble, but then I woke up this morning with an obsessive need to use up the rhubarb from the backyard, and I don’t like my baked goods nearly as sweet as my sister does…

    Anyhow. Here’s another recipe to try, and I promise, it’s deliciously tart.

    A lazy Sunday with Ellis and Clarins

    I’ve been rediscovering my Ellis Faas products recently (I adore them, but always forget about them because I have to store them off to the side of my drawer, what with the pen-style size), and I put this confection together this morning out of curiosity.

    I always turn up too much product when working with the Milky Lips L201 (Ellis Red) lipstick, so I keep the overflow in a basic five-gram jar, then use it up over the course of the next week or two. Today, though, I tried L201 on my cheeks – heck, why not, right?

    Long story short, I loved the finished result so much that I ended up blending a dab of 201 with a great, lightweight, also ‘cone-free Clarins moisturizer so that I can recreate the look without too much trouble in the future. The photos are significantly darker than usual (sorry!) as the sun seems reluctant to come out from the clouds, but I figured slightly darker photos are better than nothing!

    (Plus, darker photos are a bit of a guilty pleasure. Shh, don’t tell.)

    Why those products?

    I love a sheer, red cheek, which isn’t hard to find if you’re okay with using lip products on your cheeks. However, while a surprising number of lipsticks contain silicones (betcha didn’t see that one coming!) Ellis lipsticks don’t. I already knew that I could get a really natural-looking red lip stain by using a bit of 201, so a similar flush on the cheeks wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

    Swatched really, really sparingly, then just… sparingly.

    To sheer it out, I picked Vital Light Day because I knew it would give a lightweight “slip” to the bespoke blusher, but then sink into the skin and leave a hydrated glow (rather than a heavy, sticky moisturizer sheen). Honestly, though? You could make your own cream blusher with anything you have on hand, whether that’s a tube of your favourite MAC lipstick and a dollop of primer, or a basic Revlon SL blended with a bit of Vaseline.

    Anyhow. That’s my ramble of the day… now go be a pseudo-chemist and play with some makeup!

    Trim meets tasty with Dr. Tabor’s Crispy Lace Non-Naughty Nibbles

    The sun finally came out of hiding for a couple hours, so I’ve finally been able to take photographs of my most recent obsession. Nope, it’s not blush, and it’s not lipgloss or sunscreen…

    The product: Dr. Tabor Crispy Lace Non-Naughty Nibbles

    Why they’re awesome: I’m currently hooked on these because they’re super lightweight (which makes them easy to throw in my bag & carry around), but they’re still tasty and surprisingly filling – more filling than a basic ‘ol granola bar, even! Not to mention, they’re better for you than a lot of granola bars are: there’s about three grams of fat in each bag, two grams of fibre, and seven (!) grams of protein.

    Some of the reviews I’ve read mention that they’re not very flavourful, but I actually beg to differ – I’ve tried three or four of the flavours already, and all of them have been quite flavourful, if you ask me! But, I suppose, it’s worth noting that I have like, the most bland palette ever :P

    But you’re not on a diet: Yes and no. I’ve never gone on a diet to lose weight, and I don’t ever plan to (I love food way too much!) but I am on a gluten-free, caffeine-free, low-dairy, low-sugar diet. I know, it can get pretty crazy, but I’m lactose intolerant & things like gluten and sugar really aggravate my fibromyalgia.

    My dietary restrictions mean that it can be pretty hard to find food that I can eat on the go, which is why these are perfect: one little bag of Non-Naughty Nibbles can tide me over from breakfast to a late lunch (think an 8 AM breakfast, then lunch around one or two), and I’m more than happy to prevent a mid-afternoon blood sugar crash by eating a bag of tasty treats! :D

    Find them at: Dr. Tabor, QVC

    P.S. Have you heard of Sensa? It’s a unique weight loss tool that’s designed to reduce caloric intake, making the food you’re already eating even more diet-friendly. And yep, it’s gluten-free, too ;)

    Two-minute makeup | blue winged eyeliner

    Just a quick liner look that I wore around a week or two ago to try out a new acquisition (UD Lust). Unfortunately, it pulls very blue on my lids – gorgeous, of course, but I was really hoping for something more violet! As it stands, Lust kinda reminds me of another old favourite… except it’s more expensive and doesn’t wear as well. It is more readily available outside of Canada, though, which is about the only thing I can think of that works in its favour!

    Sorry that I haven’t the time to chat – have a stats final in just a few hours. See you afterwards & I hope you enjoy the eye look nonetheless :)

    Annabelle Volumelip swatches and review

    The product: Annabelle Volumelip Lip Plumping Gloss

    I’ve reviewed and mentioned these many times before, but I did promise side-by-side swatches of a few of the shades – so you get to read about them yet again. Or, you know, you could always skip the text and just look at the pretty photos ;) The shades featured in this post are Cherryoké, So Sanguine, Coralicious, and Sweet Tweet. I don’t have any of the others, so I can’t feature swatches of any more – sorry! The dollops of colour on the Annabelle site are pretty accurate, though, at least for these glosses.

    The Volumelip formula is one of my all-time favourites, and not just from the drugstore – they’re paraben- and scent-free, non-sticky, and come in a lovely range of colours. (Also notable: the shimmer, in the few that have it, is really finely milled, so these both look and feel really smooth). If you’re looking for something really pigmented, these aren’t the gloss to reach for, but they’re absolutely amazing if you’re looking for something with sheer to medium coverage.

    For lip swatches and additional photos, please visit the reviews by shade: Cherryoké and Sweet Tweet (post includes a full review of the formula), So Sanguine, and Coralicious.

    Tips for beauty bloggers: Photoshopping faces

    After (too long) of a delay, I’m pleased to introduce our next instalment in Tips For Beauty Bloggers. Whether you’re a fellow blogger, a photography fiend, or just another Joe the Plumber looking to clean up some photos, I hope you enjoy this post!

    I hemmed and hawed over whether or not to do this as a video, and in the end, I decided it would be best to. I’ve uploaded it to Vimeo (we’re still avoiding YouTube, at least for now) in HD format, so I’d definitely encourage you to view it fullscreen – seriously, you won’t be disappointed.

    (Yes, I’m still childishly amused by the wonders of the internet. Now shh; less mocking and more watching!)

    If you’ve enjoyed this tutorial, please link back to this post. A project like this one takes a lot of time and effort, so I’d really appreciate it if you could refrain from embedding the video on your own sites. Thanks!

    New 12/06/11 + Sunday Steals and Deals

    Three deals that caught my eye this week:

    • Philosophy: 25% off sitewide (no min!) until the 16th {philosophy25}
    • Sephora: Pick one of four free bronzing minis with all orders over $25 {sunkiss}
    • Sephora: Or, opt for a free Supergoop AçaiFusion SPF30 lip balm with any order (because your lips can get sunburned, too!) {acaibalm}

    I haven’t really been “feeling” the need for product acquisition, recently… I blame the unique combination of postal strike and summer heat. Gets me every time!

    (I am tempted to haul Inglot sometime soon, though – Christine has just ordered pretty much every shade available, as far as eyeshadows go, and I’m sorely tempted to phone in an order once she’s swatched the neutrals. I swear, that girl can make anything look amazing!)
