Random Summer product love | Dove Men + Care

The product: Dove Men+Care Thick & Clean shampoo

Maybe I’ve just developed a weird sense of fondness toward the no-frills Men+Care line, but there’s just something about this one that I’m kinda secretly (okay, not-so-secretly) enjoying. I think it has something to do with the fact that the gel is blue. Oh, and erm, also has to do with the scent, of course! It’s fresh and bright, but not agressive; generic enough that it slips into the “white noise” category of scents, but not so generic that it stops me from enjoying the fragrance in the shower; neither masculine nor feminine.

Its just kind of easy, like how flip-flops are easy to wear but don’t really influence an outfit one way or another, you know? And in the way that they’re comfortable when you wear them, but you know they’ll do some serious damage to your arches if you wear them all the time.

The ingredient list for this one (full list below) is pretty short, and though I’m not thrilled to see sodium laureth sulfate as the second ingredient, at least it’s ‘cone-free and paraben-free. I’ve been using this once every week or two as a clarifying shampoo; it leaves my dry hair feeling a little stripped if I use it too often, but is awesome if my hair’s feeling particularly icky or limp that day.

    The verdict?

Whether you’re looking for a shampoo for you or your guy, I’d say this one’s a good, affordable choice. It’s really no-frills, has a very inoffensive scent, and works best for either clarifying or for those with oily hair.

Decoding the drugstore | How to pick out shampoo and conditioner

As someone who makes choices very poorly (and I mean it when I say very poorly), the drugstore hair aisle is a pretty intimidating place for me. But, well, products have to be chosen no matter how daunting the task may seem! Here are my tips for figuring out the aisle of intimidation like a pro.

    Keep one goal in mind

Let’s be honest: unless you’re on the cast of Gossip Girl, chances are, your hair’s fair from perfect. So, instead of going all crazy with the things you’re unhappy with, pick one thing that you want out of your shampoo/conditioner duo (or two, tops, if you really insist). It’ll be a lot easier to choose products if you’re just looking for one or two things, rather than five!

Some common concerns that might apply to you:

Dry scalp. If you’re flaking, it might not actually be dandruff. Watch for small, dry flakes and a tight, uncomfortable scalp that’s soothed by moisturizers and oils.

Lack of volume. Fine hair, straight hair, and product build up are all common culprits for this one, but the right styling products and tools are usually the way to go if you have major concerns about it.

Oily scalp. Feel like you need to wash your hair again before the day’s even over? Make sure to keep conditioner only on your ends, and try not to fidget with your hair too much during the day.

Coloured hair. Nowadays, most lines have products (if not entire ranges) made specifically for coloured hair. I say embrace them; the longer you can get your colour to last, the better!

    Know the language

In the beauty world, nothing is as it seems – but most things can be decoded with a healthy dose of logic. Most marketing buzzwords follow a sort of “template,” if you will; here are a few that might come in handy.

If you have dry hair, look for words like hydrating, nourishing, and smoothing – they all indicate added conditioners that will help tame and protect your hair’s cuticle.

If you have an oily scalp, tend to have build-up or if you need more volume, look for words like clarifying, volumizing, and revitalizing, which hint at an emphasis on lightweight conditioners and heavy-hitting cleansers.

If you have sensitive skin, look for the “frees” – paraben-free, silicone-free, fragrance-free, SLS-free, etc. Be prepared to read the ingredient lists, though, because for sensitive skin doesn’t always equal a concise, simple ingredient list.

Are you ready to start a Revolution with Urban Decay?

Seriously, words cannot express how excited my monolids are for this new lash curler. I can’t wait for the reviews to start coming out!

What Urban Decay says about The Revolution

This sleek lash emancipator abolishes one-size-fits-all curling. The open cage lets you curl your lashes all at once or in sections and won’t pinch your skin!

Do eyelash curlers that look like scary torture devices make you scream? Ours won’t crimp your lashes or pinch your skin because we eliminated the culprit – those maddening bars on either side of your old eyelash curler. This sleek lash emancipator handles deftly with an open cage that allows you to curl your lashes all at once OR in sections (like just the outer lashes). And if your lash line is longer or shorter than average, gone are the days of contending with a standardized cage that was clearly designed with someone else’s eyes in mind (no more one-size-fits-all curling!). We even include 5 replacement pads – swap them out to keep your curler clean and springy. Viva The Revolution!

Clarins Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balm | 03 Crystal Red review and swatches

The product: Clarins Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balm in 03 Crystal Red

Of the three Instant Smooth lip balms, the tint of Crystal Red is my favourite. It’s sheer, for sure (though not as sheer as 02 Crystal), but imparts a really lovely “my lips but better” sort of colour – just enough red to perk up my complexion, but not so much that you need a mirror to apply.

The strange thing about the colourants in this one, though, is that they make the product (in the tube) look different depending on which direction it’s being lit from. More photos to display this effect at the bottom of this post, but I thought it was a kinda cool thing to point out!

Get graphic: a cut-out eye of the day

I had originally planned on just doing a weird liner look, but once the liner was in place, I couldn’t help but fill it in with colour. So, today’s makeup look is sort of two makeup looks, really!

I’m more inclined to the colour version (of course), but I did like both. Hope you enjoy them just as much as I did!

    Assorted Saturday Swatches

I wanted to do a look today, and got as far as swatching a few colour options, but the sun decided to disappear behind the clouds for good and I gave up. (Proper lighting? Yes, I’m still in need of that. Possibly definitely maybe DEFINITELY NOT because I’m a lazy arse.)

Anyhow! They were pretty so I’m sharing them with you anyways. Self-control, 0; Rae, 1.

L’Air de Nina Ricci (2011) | review and photos

Okay okay okay, so this is a day late – but I won’t mention it to the Blogging Powers That Be if you don’t!

Nina Ricci’s newest launch, L’Air de Nina Ricci, came out around April this year (give or take a month depending on location). It’s a lovely new blend by Louise Turner (of Love, Chloé) and Michel Girard (of Rose The One), and I’m… rather pleased to say that it’s not all that similar to L’air Du Temps!

Where the original is often described as too soapy or too much like my mother, L’Air de Nina Ricci is very fresh, very feminine, and very young. It’s touted as a “new classic,” but to be honest, I don’t think it quite gets there. Simply put, I think scents become classics by being in the right place at the right time, perhaps featuring a new molecule in a particular way, or a new style at just the right time, but there isn’t anything particularly innovative about this L’Air.

While I do like L’Air on the whole, the opening is too aggressive for my liking – so be sure to give it time to settle before judging it! I’ve found that my favourite way to wear this is to spritz it lightly on a scarf or a sweater when I wake up: that way, when I go to put it on an hour later, the fragrance has dried down to a lovely (softer) floral. (It lasts forever, too, and the base notes are absolutely divine!)

    The rundown

Notes: top – freesia, honeysuckle, violet leaves | heart – magnolia, jasmine sambac, bulgarian rose | base – palisander wood, patchouli

Noses: Louise Turner and Michel Girard

Availability: 30, 50, and 100 ml bottles of Eau de Parfum; 200 ml shower gel; 200 ml body lotion

    Bottle designed by: Virginie Barré

Photographed and filmed by: Ryan McGinley

    Model: Noreen Carmody

    The creation of the scent

I think this snippet from an interview with Turner and Girard does the scent more justice than I could ever imagine to, so…

    Preview: L’Air de Nina Ricci

Just a sneak peek into tomorrow’s review! The flip-book for L’Air is absolutely breathtaking, and I had no choice but to share it with you – it’s honestly one of the most beautifully orchestrated press packages I’ve seen thus far.

(And okay, I’ll admit that I’m a bit smitten with the particular shade of dusty pink hey chose for the book, box, and bottle. It’s just grey enough to be demure, but not so dark that it dampens the feel, you know?)
