Product ramblings | A few paraben-free drugstore mascaras

Just a quick post for reader and fellow blogger Larie, who mentioned she hadn’t yet found a paraben-free drugstore mascara to try. There are actually a ton of them; you just have to sort your way through plenty of ingredient lists to get there!

As some of you may already know, my sister is sensitive to parabens, which means that we’ve torn apart quite a few drugstores looking for decent paraben-free products ;) Above are a bunch of the mascaras that come to mind – I hope they’ll be a good starting point for those of you who are also trying to stay away from the parabens!

MAC Magenta Lip Pencil | Swatches

(Just a quick post, for those of you who commented on the lip in Monday’s blue makeup look!)

MAC Magenta lip pencil is an old favourite – great for layering under bright lipsticks (think Show Orchid, Girl About Town), but also amazing on its own, which is how I usually wear it. The company describes it as a vivid pinkish-purple, and while I think it has pretty equal quantities of both fuchsia and violet… well, that’s just semantics.

These swatches show Magenta sheerly all over the lip, with no base, and a bit of lip balm over top. The result is a long-lasting, stain-like finish; not quite opaque and not quite matte.

Review: L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara

The product: L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes (tubing mascara)

L’Oreal’s Beauty Tubes mascara is a product that I’ve had for ages, reach for almost every single day, and love to bits and pieces. Why I haven’t reviewed it already is a bit of a mystery… but I’m chalking it up to being dropped on my head as a child.

Step one: To be completely honest, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used this white primer. I’m not one for extra steps, and I don’t really care for the effect it gives – it’s all too easy to end up with clumpy lashes, when the primer comes into play, and I find the resulting tone (after the black is layered on top) is rather ashen.

Step two: Okay, so here’s where the action’s at! The mascara end of this product gives a flawlessly natural, clump-free lash, and it holds up brilliantly – through rain, tears, you name it. Despite its incredibly light weight (I kid you not when I say it literally feels like nothing), it keeps a curl from eight in the morning ’till eleven at night when I rinse it off.

I do wish this gave my lashes more “oomph,” because it really doesn’t provide much in terms of volume or length, but I’m more than willing to make the compromise – at about $10, and with frequent sales in the drugstore, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than the other tubing mascaras that come to mind.

    The verdict?

So this isn’t my favourite tubing mascara of all time (hello, Fiberwig), but it’s still a great no-frills, no-fuss product. Because I have such troubles with mascaras smudging, feeling heavy, and irritating my eyes, I really do reach for this every day, save only for the days where I skip the mascara altogether.

Tip: have an almost-perfect mascara that gives gorgeous results, but smudges and smears throughout the day? The mascara side of this product makes an awesome “mascara topcoat” that layers wonderfully!

My current go-to brow-and-contour product | Smashbox Single Eye Shadow (Matte) in Smoke

I’ve mentioned this a ton of times, but (while responding to comments in last week’s All About Brows post), I realized that I’ve never actually posted a photo of this little gem!

Smashbox Smoke, a discontinued matte grey eyeshadow, has been my brow product of choice for ages. The shadow itself is really lovely (smooth, soft without being crumbly, and very blendable), and the shade works well as a brow filler in combination with almost-black hair and cool undertones. I tried it for the first time out of frustration more than anything else – everything I had tested prior to this one just looked so burnt-red in EOTD shots – and haven’t looked back since!

swatched dry on unprimed skin (light/heavy)

As far as finding a dupe goes, I haven’t really looked for one yet. I can’t imagine it would be difficult to find one, though; it really is just a basic grey! Something like NYX Dark Grey or Bobbi Brown Steel should do the trick, or (if you’d rather use a product specifically designed for brows), NYX’s Black/Grey brow duo or Clinique’s Charcoaled brow powder would work, too.

Blue double-winged eye makeup | Trip the Light Fantastic

Today, I wanted to share a look I did based off of the Sophie Ellis-Bextor Trip the Light Fantastic album cover. It’s one of my favourites – well worth listening to if you’re looking for dance-worthy British pop music – and Sophie always looks absolutely incredible (both in and out of her stunning Rimmel London campaigns)!

For this look, I tried to focus in on the bright, violet lip, super-contoured cheeks, and (most importantly), the gorgeous, double-winged blue eye makeup. Pair that with a double dose of Photoshop, and here are the results!

All about… brows | Review and ramblings

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not much of a brow girl. I mean, it’s not that I don’t like them, and I do think that brows are vital to completing a look… but honestly? I just can’t be bothered to do them on a daily basis. I like my morning routine to be as short as humanly possible, and they’ve never really been a priority for me. Perhaps if mine were more sparse, but as it is, they’re left mainly unattended to.

I have, however, noticed that there are a lot of options when it comes to brows, and it kinda got me thinking. What do you reach for in the mornings? Do you do your brows every day? I know you’re all busy busy bees, but if you have a moment, I’d love to hear your thoughts on brows in the comments :)

Personally, I tend to prefer matte, fairly sheer brow powders, when I do use them. (I’ve actually been using a matte grey eyeshadow recently, but shh, don’t tell!) Pencils are definitely easier to travel with and touch up on the go, though, so I suppose that’s worth taking into consideration.

The only brow products I can’t see myself using? Tinted gels and liquids – the former because I’d rather fill in sparse bits than “plump up” each hair, and the latter because… well, actually, I  haven’t really a good answer for that one. It’s mainly just that I don’t like any harsh lines in my brow area, and it’s a little harder to shade with a felt tip than it is with a powder or pencil!

The product: Marcelle Accent Eyebrow Crayons

The texture: These are quite different from the products I tend to reach for, which is why I started thinking about all of this in the first place. They’re surprisingly soft, softer even than some of the eyeliners I’ve tried, and really creamy upon application, though they do set after some time. (I have to remember to be light-handed with these; they’re definitely more intense than the powders I’m used to!)

With a bit of tweaking to my technique, though, these make the jump from a solid B- to an A. It’s easy to smudge them down into a whisper of colour, and the wear is quite impressive – I still have faint lines on my arm from yesterday’s swatching, despite plenty of makeup remover and scrubbing!

TIP: When working with soft or very pigmented brow products, I find it helpful to use super-light strokes to fill in the brow area. Then, smudge with a q-tip right after application (before the product sets), and finally, pull a spoolie through your brows to groom each hair into position.

The shades: The Accent pencils come in four shades, and I think Marcelle have done quite a good blending them. I use the grey, as I do with most brow products, and I’ve been really happy with how natural it looks. (Erm, random additional tip, I guess: if you have almost-black or black-hair and a cool complexion, give the grey a try!)

Swatches, L-R: Granite, Luscious Black, Brun Tendre, Blondine

    The verdict?

Whether or not I’d recommend these depends entirely on your preference. Personally, I prefer a harder pencil (twist-up, if possible) or a powder product, so I’d pass on these. If you do like creamy brow pencils, though? Then these are awesome. They’re deliciously creamy, intensely pigmented, well-priced ($9.95 for 1.05g), and silicone- and paraben-free (because, dude, brow breakouts? Not attractive.)

Anyhow. Hit me up in the comments with your brow ramblings – I’ve rambled on far too long already!

    Silver Fox appreciation post

    The pigment

    Words? Who needs words?

(Okay, I need words. Even if this post was planned out to be nothing but a mindless picspam, I need words! This gorgeous shimmery  shade is FaceFront’s Silver Fox, a silver pigment with lilac undertones and a delicious “wet” sort of finish, even when used dry. You can catch it in action in this violet and silver makeup look.)

    The swatches

I’m sorry, these swatch photos should be could be are all rather sub-par because the sun won’t properly come out… but you’ll just have to deal. I promise to make it up to you sometime, somehow!

After much contemplation (okay, okay, after a few moments of contemplation), I decided to just post all three – hopefully, the range of swatches will help show off how the light affects the pigment. They’ve all been taken in indirect partially-cloudy sunlight, and the last photo was taken with flash.

    FaceFront Lust Quest eye

Remember when my brain wasn’t a chaotic mess, and I used to post FOTDs each and every Monday?

… yeah, I don’t really remember it either.

I wanted to create a (mainly) Lust Quest eye this week; something a little more “up my alley” than last week’s melon and teal eye. The result? This thing! While doing it, I decided one very important fact: my favourite part about this collection is totally the finishes of the eyeshadows. There’s just something about the shimmer of Silver Fox that’s just so on-the-nose that I had to use it in a look to show you – that fresh, shimmery, wet sort of effect.

Anyhow. Maybe I’m just crazy, but I hope you get what I’m talking about! Enjoy the look :)
