    A poll!

So theNotice is, as of today, doing a poll!

Some bloggers know how to insert said poll into a post. I am not one of them, however, so you must look left for it. It will run until the end of the month (expires on midnight of the 31st), so you have until then to vote! It will not, I repeat, will not, affect how I write or how things operate around here, but I am wondering why you’re all here, seeing as my content varies so much!!

You can check off multiple answers, and I encourage you to do so! Any comments can be left here, and your votes will, of course, be confidential (though I’m not sure why you would need them to be…)

Anything you can see I can see, in terms of results – I don’t get any more information than you. It is entirely possible that I can access something more, but I have no idea how, so it’s safe to say that there isn’t anything more than you can see :P

Please vote!! It really only takes a second or two, and I would love to see the results!

    To theNotice:

    Dear blog,

This is how much I love you.

    Rae.

    Erika,

I had an entire email drafted out that I would finish after going through the paperwork, signing everything, and sending it all back to you. Going through the papers, though, I realized that this is not the direction I want theNotice going in quite yet. As much as I adore the TotalBeauty network and all the blogs in it, filling out paperwork in order to blog feels too unnatural and calculated for me.

So, thank you again for all of your time, but I won’t be joining TotalBeauty. I love blogging, but more than anything, I love the freedom of it – and I feel that having to sign things and agree to doing certain things takes that away from me, if only a little.

    All the best,
    Rae.”

It must run in the family…

Our little cousins just left – they were so cute!! The littlest one plays this game with his parents that is a little… original, to say the least.

While all the other little boys are pretending to be army rangers and so fourth, he pretends to be dead. Yes, dead. (He’s three!) Then, his parents have to pretend to mourn him. When he decides they’ve done that enough, they have to bring him back to life. And, when he comes back, they have to be overjoyed that their son is not dead.

Though totally fabulous… how fucked up is that?!

    That was smart!

Anne Hathaway has been looking just gorgeous recently – and I mean, she deserves to! She dumped the no-good boyfriend, cropped the hair… seriously, people, this girl is glowing!

If you haven’t heard yet, this smart little moment happened on the red carpet the other day:

“Personal questions were strictly forbidden at the Italian premiere of Get Smart on Monday – but that didn’t stop one reporter from asking the movie’s star, Anne Hathaway, ‘Was the separation from your ex-boyfriend painful?’

…After the reporter lobbed the question, Hathaway remained silent and attempted a faint smile. But, as if on cue, her costar Steve Carell valiantly stepped in to declare: ‘In my role of agent [for] Miss Hathaway, I would like to say that she does not answer questions relating to this subject.'”

In other news, have you taken a good look at her dress?! The folding (more obvious in the first picture) is just perfect, and the slit (look left) is smoking!

I just love how she let her face and the dress take a simple centre stage, with a gorgeous clutch and gold bracelets as her only accessories (again, visible only in the first photo on the right). The black peep-toe shoes were just the perfect choice!

    To get her make-up:

    1. Conceal well – undereye circles must not be seen!
    2. Apply a matte base. If you’re really oily, use these tricks to help!
    3. Sweep a light pink cream-to-powder or powder blush over the apples of your cheeks.
    4. Fill in (and/or clean up!) brows.
    5. Use a similar shade for your lids; keep your eyes basic and nude, hi-lighting the brow bone with a (matte!) almost-white shade and using pink and light beige colours in your crease.
    6. Line eyes heavily in black; stop lining right under the centre your iris on the bottom and above the inside edge of your iris on the top. Smudge inwards so you don’t end up with a harsh stop. (Winging optional; Anne doesn’t but a little wing would look great here!) Do not line waterline – if you really want to, though, I would go with a white-ish colour. Minimal shimmer, or it won’t blend with the rest of your face!
    7. Line inside corners in white to brighten up your face (Again, Anne stays matte, but a bit of shimmer wouldn’t hurt here)
    8. Mascara, mascara, mascara – natural-looking fake eyelashes too, if you really want to glam it up! In-your-face volume and length is essential.
    9. Apply a fire-engine red lipstick, blot off – you want the look of a stain. Or, if you have it, use a lip pencil like Nars’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella. (note: because we’re not all beautiful and glowing like Anne, add a light gloss if you’re looking parched)
    10. Set everything with a light or translucent loose powder.
    11. Knock ’em dead!

    To get her hair:

    1. Part hair with a very tiny zigzag (helps with volume; comb hair back, use tail of a tail comb to “draw” a zigzag, pull right and left sides apart at the crown of your head and the zigzag should fall open), on either the right or left side of your head – whichever is more flattering. Add product: Spritz roots with a volumizing spray. Spray hair with a thickener, or work in a curl balm. A heat protecting product is optional.
    2. Using a round brush and blow-drier (or a curling iron blow-drier, which I have and definitely recommend purchasing), overdirect hair past the part and dry, pulling outwards. Slowly spin brush as you dry. This creates volume at the roots. (If this is too hard for you, flip your head over and blowdry it upside-down. This is easier but will not get you the same amount of volume.)
    3. Take front pieces of hair and blow dry diagonally – the front left piece should be dried while it is pulled back and to the right. Spin brush as you do this – we’re blowing in a curl that will lift your front pieces away from your face in swoops, like Anne’s hair!
    4. Make sure all your hair is bone-dry to prevent damage. Go over pieces that aren’t right now!
    5. Using a large barrel curling iron, curl! Keep the top voluminous but sleek, with most of the curls at ear level and below. TIP: clip up hair in layers, curling each layer a different direction to prevent hair from “clumping” and forming one big wave. Curl the top layer so that the curls curl away from your face so that they’re not tickling your nose all night long!
    6. Spray to set. Do not comb through!
    7. Optional, but I would do it: Spray with shine spray!

    Referrals

I’m too tired to post today and wanted something non-backlog, so here’s a mini link love of sites that are new in my *click* column. Either I just found them, or I forgot to put them on before!

Pictures for Sad Children is the best thing since ever. I’m never sure weather I should laugh or cry, or both! Wonderful webcomic, just wonderful.

I’ve been reading [makeupFIX] for a long time, but forgot to add it to the list – there are some seriously gorgeous EOTDs here, though she doesn’t update as much as I’d like – but with two little ones, she has good reason to be busy!

save.ca and Retail Me Not are old standby coupon/code sites, but I just decided them to be list-worthy. (Save is Canadian, and mails you P&G coupons for free!)

Cusp of Normal is fabulous. It was found through FB’s link love – thanks for putting such wonderful links up, FB! Another in my “Personal Blogs” reading folder is The Strange Musings of a Distracted Spunk – that girl can write, people!

Seeing as those are blogs and not posts, they should keep you busy for a while! Really, take an hour out of your weekend to skim them (especially Pictures and Strange Musings!). I promise it will be worth it :)

Why I shouldn’t be reading things:

This is all I want. But according to this post, found through FB’s link love, it’s not going to happen.

Apparently, if you haven’t read the post yet, smart girls don’t get the guy. I mean, I guess to some extent this is obvious; generally, the gorgeous one with the incredibly malleable mind does. I’m not pretty enough to land in the “gorgeous” category, but all I really want to be is a housewife. I mean, I guess I’m pretty enough, but that’s by Asian standards, and pretty enough is not something I ever meant to be.

I was raised to be the best, and I’ve never really made it there. I’m not quite pretty enough to be a trophy wife, but I’m not quite dumb enough to find “true love”. I’m sorry, but if you haven’t noticed, something here is not fair. Either I should be prettier and get the guy, or I should be smarter and not even want him, because being where I am will, apparently, get me nowhere.

It’s not even like I’m at a lack for smart men – half the kids I know are coded (IQs in the top 3% in Alberta or something is how we got into AC, and almost all of us went from that to IB). Smart men are everywhere. They just don’t want us smart women.

    Frozen bananas…

… are delicious.I’m terrible at eating them, but here’s how I do it: freeze ripe banana. Remove from freezer, submerge in warm water to soften outside. Hack off peel with cleaver. Eat delicious inside and dispose of peel. Definitely do not eat peel.

Other ways to eat: peel first. Freeze on tray. Or, peel and slice, then freeze. (note to self: must try this!) You can also have your frozen bananas chocolate-dipped, on a stick, etc.

Bonus: Bananas give you energy and are said to help with cramps!

    Quo brushes

These pretties were on sale when I picked them up – they’re decently priced, regular, and are often 20%. But you know me – always wanting the best price :P So, I picked these up for just under $20, I believe? For both. It was either 40 or 60% off…can’t remember which.

Names above – I wanted a white contour brush, and I’m so glad I found one! The eye brush I’ll use either for e/s (if I need to, which I don’t usually) or, more often, for mineral concealer around my eyes. Its dense, super-soft bristles can get into the corners and such without stabbing my eyeballs!!

After washing, the All Over brush held up pretty well – actually, it held up amazingly. I didn’t get much shedding, and reviews say that once you get over the initial everything-falling-everywhere, they hold in very well. I adore this brush!! It’s perfect for what I’m using it for.
About a centimetre longer than the eye brush is the face contour. I was unimpressed with it after I washed it. Bristles everywhere, splaying to the sides… also, it smelled funny. However, after re-washing and drying it differently (don’t shape it how you want it to look, but rather keep it as “together” and skinny as possible), I found it to be okay.
It could be softer, though, and it would have been nice if it didn’t splay out so much on my cheek.

The verdict: Definitely buy the All Over Eye Shadow brush – it’s amazing at what it does, and is generally just a dream. Wait for at least a 20% off sale – they’re so common it would be stupid not to! In terms of the Face Contour Brush? I wouldn’t buy it again. But for the price, and seeing as I wanted a white one (I know. I’m crazy.), it was just okay. I mean, if I only spent about $10 on a full-sized brush, I shouldn’t be expecting miracles, right?

    Drapes!

Okay, so this is totally not a “Room Makeover for the Skint”. (see label)

However, it is a very drastic change in the room. I really wanted an accent wall, but drapes are easier to install and change, and with big drapes on a small wall, they have a very similar impact!

There was no way of me doing this on the cheap: with two layers of fabric for each drape, and each drape being about 127 x 213 cm, it would be about 8m of fabric. That ends up being about $80 for DIY fabric, seeing as the *perfect* fabric is hard to find and would most likely be expensive (calculated at $10/metre).

However… if you’re not as picky as I am, you could just buy drapes on sale, or the not-quite-perfect $5/metre fabric. Drapes would be easy to sew yourself – simple straight stitching, it would just take a very long time because there is so much fabric to measure, cut, and stitch together!

So anyhow, after too long of a wait, I finally got drapes! Home Outfitters had a “Buy One Get One Half Off” sale, which means that they were $33 each. Then the hardware (the rod and hooks) cost about another $25 (mom bought a rod, too, so this was *about* 25% off) (one rod, one at 50% off; translates into about each at 25% off).
Total: $91. However, I think it was worth it – the fabric has a hidden tab (it’s two-layered, with the other layer being a light coloured linen sheet) and it’s the perfect colour and style! (short horizontal etchy line things, which you can’t really see in the photo but I just adore)

Here’s the end of the rod (and a better depiction of their colour):

    I love them!!
