    Bad, and worse.

So the skin condition (that I’ve had almost all my life) on the backs of my arms, legs, hips, ass, and a bit on my face is getting worse. I finally figured out what it is this week Keratosis Pilaris. It is:

Worldwide, KP affects an estimated 40 to 50% of the adult population and approximately 50%-80% of all adolescents. It is more common in women than in men. Varying in degree, cases of KP can range from minimal to severe.

There are several different types of keratosis pilaris, including: keratosis pilaris rubra (red, inflamed bumps) I occasionally have this on my arms, alba (rough, bumpy skin with no irritation) this is what I usually have on my arms, as well as my bottom, knees, hips, and minimally on the backs of my thighs, rubra faceii (reddish rash on the cheeks) I have a bit of this, moreso on my left cheek, along my jawline and related disorders.

Many people with keratosis pilaris do not know they have it. While KP resembles goose bumps, it is characterized by the appearance of small rough bumps on the skin. As a result, it is often confused with acne. Squeezing them may cause bleeding. WTF?! I would never think of squeezing them! That’s just stupid!!

So, what can help? “Exfoliation, intensive moisturizing cremes, lac-hydrin, topical retinoids such as Retin A, alpha [and beta] hydroxy acids or urea may be used to temporarily improve the appearance and texture of affected skin“

What I need is suggestions for a good drugstore AHA or BHA cream! It can be for the face OR for the body – either one, as long as they’re not going to cost a fortune. I want to know my skin’s okay with hydroxy acids before splashing out on one! The KP is definitely getting worse recently, and I’m finding it pretty annoying.

On a slightly related note, here is the “worse” news: I may be allergic to mineral oil. We’re not sure yet…but I really hope I’m not. That would make life such a hassle.

    Shopping, anyone?

Marketing of a new online shopping site contacted me before I left. I didn’t think this was the kind of thing you guys would be into, but I figured I would ask anyways.

It’s called Ideeli and is much like Hautelook or the Glit Groupe. Invitation-only, membership is free unless you want to shop the sales with an hour’s notice (better selection, and you know when they are) Screencaps: (click to enlarge. I hope I can legally do this… let me know if I can’t!)

In the midst of catching up…

Lots of hauls and scenery photos to share.

Lots of fun was had. (We even went creaturing!*)

We got home after ALTOGETHER TOO MUCH DRIVING at 2am.

I got Head&Shoulders samples that I ordered in friggin January, my sister got like TEN samples from Mario Badescu (that I ordered for her, after about a month of emailing them about her skin)

Lots of cleaning. Must continue this today.

The sum of all this? I’m home! I think it’s safe to say that I’ll be blogging like a normal person in 3 to 4 days… until then, I will be posting very belated comments on your blogs, and enjoying the having-of-downtime.

*Creaturing: a word pronounced creature-ing; we went to the beach and looked at stuff.

    Mario Badescu: the company

To sum up my Mario Badescu series (I hope those links work!), I just wanted to do a quick review of the company itself. While I love the concept of free samples, I can’t understand why anyone uses their products – they were all disappointing in one way or another. I mean, I got sent a sample that looks so old and gross that it could probably be carbon dated. To back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

So, all in all, Badescu was a bomb. The bad kind of bomb, with products that are either boring, useless, or just generally suck. I really, really wanted to love them…but it’s just not going to happen.

The verdict? Don’t waste your money. But hell, if the samples are free, why not, right? Maybe you’ll find a gem.

    Mario Badescu: Azulene Calming Mask

The prettiest one of all? Azulene Calming Mask!

What they say: “Soothing Azulene, a Chamomile Extract, along with Balsam Peru, a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient, come together in this non-hardening mask that comforts irritated, red, and very sensitive skin types. Also made with Kaolin (clay) and Wheat Starch to absorb impurities in the pores. Best when followed up with our Control Cream.” (for all skin types)

At first sight: This light blue-green product is like a thick moisturiser, or a very strange molasses! It smells a little like old person and a little like clay and a little like soap – not too shabby, I guess. It has little bubbles, and was the other product I really wanted to try (the first being the Strawberry scrub).

At first use: I’ve used this a few times now (you can get about three uses out of the sample) without any noticeable improvement. Contrary to its description, it does harden, though not uncomfortably. I found the scent to be pretty okay, though I can easily see people hating it! It washes off easily and I don’t have any complaints about it – it was not smelly, waxy, rough, or otherwise unpleasant.

The verdict: I don’t know. I didn’t have any issues with this, but it didn’t really seem to do anything to my skin, either. As mentioned, I didn’t notice an improvement in texture or amount of breakouts, and it didn’t make my red patches any more red. However, it didn’t make my skin any worse, either!

    Mario Badescu: Strawberry Face Scrub

The one Mario product that looked…fun! This Strawberry Face Scrub has actual strawberry bits in it, which got me all excited!!

What they say: “Made with real Strawberry seeds that gently buff away flaky skin while natural AHA’s breakdown dull build-up to unclog pores. It improves overall texture to the skin by revealing healthy, glowing skin while preventing blackheads.” (for all skin types)

At first sight: This pearly pink scrub looks creamy and fun! And there are strawberry seeds! Real strawberry seeds! The smell, though, is not so real – kind of fake. Like fake strawberry poison. Or real strawberry poison, I suppose…

At first use: The buffers in this product are seeds – just as they said. I find this too harsh and rough; I really prefer small beads to buff away my dead skin. It felt like the seeds were stabbing my face! Also, there was no lather, and it made my skin feel congested, like there was a thick waxy layer clogging my pores. And the chemically scent? Disgusting!

The verdict: The worst exfoliator I’ve ever tried. I can only see this working for someone with really thick skin (ie no pain receptors) that’s also really dry – otherwise, I think it’ll make you break out.

    Mario Badescu: Hyaluronic Moisturiser SPF15

One more… Hyaluronic Moisturiser SPF 15.

What they say: Daily moisture and moderate sun protection for combination, dry skin. Hyaluronic Acid locks in skin’s natural moisture and antioxidant Vitamin A based Peanut Oil nourishes the skin. Absorbent and non-greasy.” (for combination, dry, or sensitive skin. Sounds perfect for me!)

At first sight: Um, I think mine has gone bad. It’s all funny looking and jello-like. Also, the oil has separated. And it smells really funky.

At first use: Hell no. Are you joking?! I’m not putting this on my face! Look at it!
However, for the sake of this review, I did put it on my arm. I didn’t sprout anything, which is good, and I don’t have scales (yet.) The smell turned quickly to reveal something sunblocky, and a little of this goo goes a long way.

    The verdict: Eeew.
I’m not even granting this a verdict, it was so disgusting! Maybe if I would have gotten a not-rotting sample I could have loved it – but that’s highly doubtful.
