    Tint your balm

I’m so proud of myself, finally doing my first tutorial! God, I’m lazy.

This was done back in April, but I never got around to publishing it. I figured today would be as good of a day as any, seeing as I go back to school today (ugh.)

    Materials

    • Melting device: blow dryer or microwave, though I’ve heard a straight or curling iron can be used to heat from the bottom with a metal container! Also, things melt well in a metal spoon over a flame.
    • A placemat, or stack of paper, to keep your surface clean.
    • A container – pots are the most handy, try to use an old sample container. But an old lipstick or lip balm tube would work just fine if you’re using a more solid base!
    • Fill it with a base: Vaseline, or an old colourless lip balm.
    • Now get something to tint it with – mineral powders and pigments are easiest, but you could break an old eyeshadow and grind it up, or use a piece of stiff paper to scrape colour off your pan blush or eyeshadow. For the perfect nude gloss (I don’t have a photo, but this looks amazing on me, if I do say myself!), use a foundation that is just a little too light to match your skin tone. (I’m using EM Sandy Fair sample) Remember: if you’re about to use a solid, make sure it melts evenly, first!
    • Get a spatula – I like using butter knives, actually, as they’re flat and non-serrated, as well as small.
    • If that doesn’t fit in you pot, get something smaller to stir with – I used a toothpick, but beware: they can cause bubbles!

    Steps
*if you’re melting over a flame or iron, skip the first two steps. Instead, put the balm in the middle of the spoon, melt (it melts super fast over a flame!) and pour into your container.

    1. Fill your container with the balm, using the spatula. Put it on paper or a placemat, in case of spills. (If you do use paper, use three+ sheets!)
    2. Melt the balm – with a blow-dryer, or in a microwave. We want it super-liquidy, but remember: the pot is light, so have the dryer directly overhead, lest you blow it off the table! Also, if your container is too full, the air will force it to overflow, so only fill it about halfway to begin with. It would have been a good idea for me to put objects around the pot, to keep it from sliding around!
    3. Tap in your colour. If you want it to tint your lips, add a generous ammount, but if you just want the colour for fun, tip in just enough to get your colour (For instance, I made my sister a purple lip balm, but it doesn’t tint her lips! Photo at bottom.)
    4. Mix your colour in – if it’s not dark enough, add more pigment. Too dark? Add more base. Repeat! (If you keep having to add base, you may need to throw some out – remember, if it’s chock-full, it’ll spill!)
    5. Wipe the edges while it’s still warm, set on a level surface, and don’t touch it! Mine take about 15 minutes to cool completely.
    6. If you’re not 100% happy with it, melt and repeat until you are :)

    The finished product:

    Other:
Just warm up old petroleum-based lip balms and let them set for a nice like-new finish. (TBS Born Lippy in strawberry)
Vaseline + mineral pigments = great for sensitive skin! My sister can’t use anything but Vaseline, so I melted her this for her birthday. Just a touch of pigment made the balm a deep purple (her favourite colour), but it’s pigmented lightly enough that it doesn’t show up on her lips.
    *make sure it’s lip-safe!
A pot of Vaseline makes a nice clear balm. I melted some in an old Altoid gum container, just for kicks :D It’s great to have lying around in my bag or drawer to use as a lip balm, gloss, or even on my eyelashes. Or, in extreme events, on my flyaways!

    Australia

Would anyone like to tell me how Australian pricing works? Because you guys have a currency that is basically equal to ours, but you pay a TON more for things.

Do you make more? Or something? And what’s to stop Australians from taking their on-par cash and buying everything in North America (and having it shipped to them)??

Oh. This makes my head hurt.

Sephora revamp, plus a deal tip-off or two

Sephora has finally caught on – and given a “review” feature!! This is exciting ^^

Also, there is a new Too Faced set. It’s the $29.50 Fall Into Fashion Collection, which includes Liquif-eye, a duo eyeshadow in Ooh and Aah (black and grey), and the new Pinpoint mascara (which is why I’m letting you know about this deal.) I’ve heard really great things about it, and this would be a great way to get your hands on a tube, seeing as the mascara itself is worth $19.50 US.

And lastly, Glit Groupe (my favourite site of its kind) wants to know if my readers want a customized link to join. I think we’re okay now, but let me know if you do!

    4DAY, BETTYBAG

A great deal at Tarte until September 10th while supplies last. Buy a 4-day stay (mascara) and recieve a free lock&roll (liquid eyeshadow). Just add both to your cart (you know what this means, kids? It’s a full-sized freebie!! And you get to choose your shade!) and enter the code. You’ll get the $17 shadow for free!
And at Benefit a free “Betty brushes up on beauty” bag with any (non-sale) brush purchase. Valid until September 3rd. I’m not sure about their brushes, though – I have a cousin who bought a few and says that, though they’re of good quality, she never uses them because they’re so stiff.

ALSO: go check out Benefit’s buh-buys section – sale alert!!

Strange things people have googled to find theNotice

“It’s over. It’s so, so over.” I quoted this from Grey’s Anatomy, partially because it was fitting, and partially for fun. (Mainly for fun.) You’d be surprised if you knew how many of my titles are quotes.

    “free clinique kmph 26”
Just one thing to say to this one… WTF?! That doesn’t make any sense! “Free Clinique” would make sense if you were trying to find freebies, I guess. But adding 26 kilometres per hour? What???

“one week only, sephora’s new blockbuster palette August 24, 2008” This one makes sense, seeing that theNotice is largely a beauty blog. However, my link is at the bottom of the page (who scrolls down that far if you can find what you’re looking for in the top three?) and also… who the hell types THAT MUCH into the search bar?!

“quo blush birch” Nonsensical, that’s what it is. My blog doesn’t come up with these search terms! (However, the first result is a post on teamsugar, by me.) This is very strange, that’s what it is.

That’s it for now, lovelies. I’m off to school for registration… wish me luck! (Though I do not see why I would need it.)

    Yesterday afternoon’s surprise

As you all know, I sent my first ever necklace to Suzie a while back. She let me know, yesterday, that she received it!! Here are photos of the finished product (Suzie: lmk if you want me to take them down, and/or send them to you) I’m glad she liked it!(Don’t worry, I can do more conservative for orders!)

Detailing on one of the keys: The other thing, though, was I received her end. I told her to just send me whatever – I love a good surprise. She sent me an Australian copy of my favourite mag, which arrived first, and also this:My reaction when I saw the package in the mailbox, of course, was that of any product junkie: oh my god large package!! *drool* The contents follow.
Everything looks super-amazing, and I already have product photos of a few of them. Don’t worry – you’ll get reviews! (see? Everyone benefits when Rae gets goodies!)

In other related goodie news, I received two MUA packages recently. This means reviews of BeneTint, Laura Geller’s Eye Stay duo, and more, sometime in the future.

    I’m excited!

    Site work

Note: The “cosmetics” tag has been broken down into bits. This is, in part, for your convenience. However, it was 95% pure, undiluted OCD.

    • Makeup: base this contains posts on foundation, concealers, primers, and powders.
    • Makeup: cheeks – my favourite category! I love my blushers :)
    • Makeup: eyes. Eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, and so fourth. I’m not sure how this will go, though, as I don’t wear a lot of eye makeup. I was blessed (coughcursedcough) with very sensitive eyes, and I touch them frequently (I yawn, they water buckets. And I am always tired.)
    • Makeup: lips is the clickable key to all things lippie. Lipsticks, lipglosses, lip conditioners, and my favourite – lip stains – can all be found (someday) here.
    • Makeup: nails turned out larger than I would have expected (more than half of it is still unpublished as of yet… they’re all missing tiny pieces, like a link or formatting. I’ll get around to it when needed.) I’m not a polish junkie by any means, but I do like shiny things…
    • Finally, Makeup: other has everything that doesn’t fit nicely under one of the above labels. Posts that span categories, hauls, lemmings, etc.

As you can tell, the categories don’t have many posts in them. This will change with time, though… I promise :P

Enjoy your organized browsing, girls and… girls!
