Reminder: sign up for the giveaway!

With about a week left, I figured it was time to tempt you into telling me things by describing the giveaway a bit.

So – I’m telling you three items in the package. There will be others, of course, but I do want it to be a bit of a surprise!

    • A Philosophy lip gloss, which was used once with a q-tip and sanitized
    • A Bobbi Brown lip pencil, sharpened and sanitized (I found two in my new kit!)
    • And finally, a Smashbox Cream Liner, brand new, and swiped one tiny bit to make sure it’s still creamy (it is. And the shade is gorgeous, as I found out, lol!)

    Get entering, ladies!

Fresque: French for fresco, the art of painting on fresh, moist plaster with pigments dissolved in water.

Alternate definition, which I think fits a little better: A cool, refreshing state in the air; duskiness; coolness; shade. Thanks to Dictionary.com and Webster’s.

Product: Lancome Blush Subtil in Rose Fresque

(The above photo is NOT very colour-accurate. Well… the tones are almost spot-on, but it’s too light. The swatch is closer.)

I love the way this blush looks on my cool, fair skin, but it doesn’t come without hefty negatives. For all of its gorgeous glory, this blusher smells incredibly makeup-y, with the cringe-worthy price tag of $29.50USD. It goes on more sheerly than expected, and probably would not work well on darker skin tones – essentially, anyone with very warm undertones who doesn’t look like a ghost 98% of the time!

But yet, I still love it. Why, you ask? This gives me the perfect it’s-cold-outside glow, which has been hard to find! It’s a white-pink, if you understand what I’m trying to say, so it looks like my fair cheeks are flushed because of open capillary beds under my colour-deprived epidermis. Reds always look orange on me, and apricots can veer to browns in the blink of an eye. My Asian readers, you know what I’m talking about! It can be quite hard to find an “it’s cold outside” blusher when almost everything looks ‘off’ due to our very yellow undertones. In addition, this pan is fairly large (there is no size listed, but it’s fair-sized.) Though Lancome’s packaging gets dirty with fingerprints quickly, it’s sleek and sophisticated enough to make up for it. This layerable blush stays on all day long, and when I really do flush, because of its perfect shade, it doesn’t compete with my natural colour! And despite the fact that I can’t see this working on medium to dark skintones, I also can’t see it being ruddy on anyone, due to its smooth application and the blissful absence of brown tones. That said, though, I do like this a lot more in the winter than in the summer, when I’m a half-shade darker. (I’m sunscreen-obsessed, so I don’t really… tan. Ever.)

Pale-skinned beauties, this one’s for you! If you need a natural flush-from-within, this is perfect – the colour is breathtaking and matte, without an once of chalkiness.

    Forever never happens

What: Make Up For Ever‘s Aqua Eyes liner, in 0L (also known as “mat black”) $17US, $19.50CAD

Texture: nice and creamy, very similar to my (also waterproof) GOSH liner. This one glides on like a dream, with no tugging whatsoever, so points for that!

Colour: Not as black as it could be, but also not a grey-black. I wouldn’t do a dramatic look with this, but if I had to I’m sure I could get a more vibrant line by layering. I think.

Staying power: of course, this is the one you want to hear about! It looked great on my waterline, and went on incredibly evenly – and then promptly disappeared. I’m not quite sure where it went, because it didn’t leave dark shadows, but it was gone! As for on normal skin? I lined my lower and upper lash lines with it this morning, and at noon, it was still going strong! However, by the time I looked in the mirror around four in the afternoon, I had giant raccoon eyes! Okay, maybe not giant, but there was a good half-centimetre of sooty grey (and not in a good way) black around my eyes, which I find I get sometimes from lining my upper lash line. I was disappointed – this stuff was supposed to stay on well!

    The verdict? Pass.

Why? This is pretty much identical to the GOSH* pencil, which is regularly $6-ish cheaper, and $8 when the GOSH is on sale (which is pretty often!) They both have a great, creamy texture, and boast gigantic colour ranges, and (dare I say it?) I think the cheaper GOSH has slightly better staying power! (It’s never given me crazy colour bleeding.) I have yet to try the Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencil that it’s compared with, which is $16 for the same amount of product. Hmm – I could have sworn they used to be the same price…

*GOSH still isn’t available in the US as far as I know, though. Ha! Take that! Us Canadains have something you don’t! -beams- Still, though, I’d pass on the MUFE pencil. It’s just not worth the price.

    What are you removing?

What it is: The Body Shop’s Camomile Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover, a liquid non-waterproof makeup remover. $14.50 for 250ml – what can I say, I had a gift card!

Ingredients: Water, Cyclomethicone, Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Coco-Glucoside, Carbomer, Algae Extract, Benzyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Extract, Sodium Hydroxide, Dimethicone, Disodium EDTA, Chlorphenesin, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben. The good: Well, I support the Body Shop. I love how they support community trade (fair trade for a number of their ingredients) and how their US/Canadian prices are the same on the majority of their products. I love that this product, in particular, doesn’t have a putrid smell, and I love how it doesn’t cloud my eyes if I do get some in there, the way some oil-based removers will. It does sting, but then again, even water stings my eyes. It’s pretty good at removing non-waterproof makeup, but doesn’t do much for the waterproof ones.

The bad: Because this is alcohol-based and I have dry, sensitive skin, if I don’t rinse promptly after using, it does sting my skin. It’s a little on the pricey side for what it does do, and I think that other removers would be more cost-effective. I also don’t like how many parabens are in this product – it doesn’t matter much to me personally, but it means I could never use this on someone like my sister.

The verdict: I’d pass on this. I usually just end up using it to remover swatches (which it IS good at!) However, if you don’t wear waterproof makeup, and you have oily skin, this might not be so bad! I have a cousin who loves this stuff, as she fits the aformentioned two categories. I believe she’s actually on her second bottle, now!

    Fridays ARE really about you.

I’m clearly having the best month ever, and I wanted to share it. But my real-life “friends” aren’t makeup junkies (and the one who does wear makeup, upon hearing my good news, immediately blurted “Can I, like, have some of it?” – I know, it doesn’t sound all that terrible in text, but I was so repulsed. No “that’s great!” or “I didn’t know you actually wanted to go into makeup”, just insistence that lasted for minutes that I give her some stuff for free.)

Erm, where was I? Oh, right!

theNotice is having it’s first giveaway!!

I know – it’s about time! I’m not telling you what it’s for until the contest is over, though I guarentee there is makeup involved. It’s not some giant giveaway, just a little package of a couple things that I had kicking around in my drawers that I know I won’t use, and something out of the traincase from Betsy that I noticed there were two of!

    How to enter
There are three ways – and each way will get you one entry. It’ll be random draw, and the contest ends in two weeks (March 6th) Here are the ways!

    1. Send an email to my.make.belive (at) gmail.com with your full name and address. I know what it’s like to be excluded from giveaways, so this contest is open worldwide! I’ll ship it the cheapest way possible, though, so if you’re in Singapore… don’t be expecting it in a week!
    2. Follow me on Blogger
    3. Send me a warm-fuzzies story* (this way’ll get you not one, not two, but three entries because I’d love to hear the stories and I know they take time!) at the email mentioned above.

Rules? Who needs rules!? Okay, we need rules. Only one entry per catagory, but that’s a total of five possible entries per person. Also, I’m not having this giveaway unless I get at least fifty entries – so get off your lazy arses and start entering! I have a hit counter. I know you’re out there. And hey, I betcha your blogger friends won’t hate you for telling them about a contest!

*What’s a warm-fuzzy story? Anything that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside (duh!) It can be something you saw that was so utterly kind that you started glowing from the inside-out like a firefly on crack, or something you did (or had done to you) that just warmed you. Betsy’s act of giving me the traincase made me feel fantastic about myself, like I can take on the world and do whatever I put my mind to, and that’s the real reason for this giveaway, so I’d love to hear your stories as well!

    Tessa Thursdays

    OMG.

I totally screwed up posting today’s installment, so I promise to have it up next week! I’m so sorry, Tess, hon :( I set it to post in 2010 x.x I know – whoo, go Rae! Not.

    Have fun salivating

Pictures of the traincase, as promised! I already took photos (both product photos and swatch photos) of each different line of foundation, so in the next few weeks you’ll get a ton of foundation reviews! There were some great formulas and some not-so-great ones, plus I found the HG – Aura Science’s stick foundation, in L3. It’s a perfect match for me, creamy, but with a smooth powder finish. The downside? Obviously there is one, because that’s the way the world works for Rae: not only has it been discontinued, Aura Science doesn’t even exist anymore. -sigh-. Oh well. I’ll get over it, especially as I don’t wear foundation unless I absolutely must!

I’m not about to list off everything, so feel free to enlarge the photos and have a look around for yourself! There isn’t a ton in terms of shadows (though there are a bunch of lovely Senna ones that aren’t in here, as the box is separate and rather large) or lippies (as they go rancid more quickly) so I’ll still have to accumulate those if I want to “complete” my kit, but for foundation, concealer, bronzers, and eye brushes? I’m set! (that just sends shivers up my spine ^^)

Everything, unorganized: (isn’t that the most wonderful traincase design ever? It’ll never get top-heavy and fall over, becuse – get this – the shelves rest on the lid. It’s ingenious!)

All aboard! Some of it’s in my drawer for daily use, and some items from my drawer have moved to the traincase.

The foundations, bold lip pencils, a few tools, and concealers:

Blushes, CCBs, a few shadows, lots of bronzer, primers, lip products (of which there are a TON of pencils), mascaras, brow duos… (!)
Man, I’m buzzing with excitement! And I think I know what to do as a “thank you”, now, so off I go!

    Share:

    Oh. My. God.

I was expecting a tiny sack. Maybe a box. Ten items, tops.

Mom came home with an entire large-sized traincase, literally packed full with makeup – colours for every skintone under the sun, brushes, everything!

I’ll post pictures later tomorrow night when I find my plug-thingy, and stop hyperventillating.

    Oh my god!

I’m off to go work on the best thank-you letter ever, because honestly, it is necesary. I feel like someone just gave me her baby, but less guilty, because I’m not in some giant human trafficing scandal.

The battle of the HG powders

The contenders enter the ring and circle around each other. Silica takes a shot at Lucidity. He misses! Lucidity lunges at Silica Powder’s trousers and grabs ahold. The ref bloooows the whistle –

Man, I need to get more sleep. My powders are attacking each other in a strange personified state in my head!

Well, here’s how it went down… (if you’d like to skip to the bottom, I understand and promise not to hate you. The conclusion and “verdict” is down there!)

    xx&

    0:00
I apply a thick streak of blush to the back of my hand, making sure it’s even throughout. I section it into three parts with my black eyeliner.

    0:01
I put silica powder over the first section of blush, Estee Lauder Lucidity (in Medium, which is too dark for my skin but sheers out and is alright) on the middle and leave the last one empty. I label them.

    0:02
I realize that “s” for silica, “e” for Estee, and “x” for nothing will not work when I look at my hand for the second time and see it reads “sex”. Way to FAIL, Rae.

    0:05
The silica has left a whitish cast on my skin, and is more obvious in the lines where there is no blush. The Lucidity has toned down the blush much more, but is invisible in the lines on the back of my hand. It is glittering rather violently, though.

    0:15
I wash some grapes, and pat dry the back of my hand. What is this maddness?! The glitter is gone?! I rush into the sunlight to find that, no, it’s still there – but now that part of my hand looks like it’s glowing from within. The gaudy glitter is gone, and natural, wearable shimmer has been left behind!
    1:30
I go back for a second round of grapes. Man, Everyday Mineral’s Sunday Brunch looks ugly on my hand (so orange!) but it sure does hold up well. There’s a tiny bit of fading on the bare section, but the two with powder on top look the same as they did while I was eating my first bowl of grapes.

    1:50
I examine the Estee Lauder. It’s way more expensive, at about $30 (for much less product), but it gives a gorgeous glow that silica doesn’t, and is available in-store. On the flip side, though, it ‘tones down’ the blush a bit. Buuut then it has to go and apply more smoothly and be less obvious on bare skin. And feel velvety soft. Darn, now the decisions getting harder!

    2:00
I examine the silica. The biggest problem is that it raises a number of health concerns, plus it’s more visible on bare skin. But it leaves a very smooth finish, and absorbs oil, the latter of which Lucidity doesn’t. It’s cheaper, but not sold in stores unless you’re buying MUFE HD, which is on-par with Lucidity in terms of price.

    3:15
The bare part is starting to fade away – I’d say only half the pigment is left. Which is prety awesome, seeing as I washed myself a thrid bowl of grapes, ate a cookie, and did a crapload of homework. I may have to try wearing this blush, even though I don’t think the colour will suit me at all!

    3:45
No change from a half hour ago. I’m thinking about scrubbing my hand with soap to see if anything will happen.
    5:30
I spilt some browns sugar sauce (used on our kabochi squash – mmm!) on my hands and had to wash thoroughly. I think the Lucidity is actually doing a better job…

    10:00
Got bored, gave up. In the end, the swatchs under both powders held up about the same, and the un-powdered swatch wore to about half of its original intensity.

    xx&

The result? Well, these two loose powders work equally as well.

The silica is great because of its gorgeous texture, cheap price, and oil-absorbing qualities. It’s not-so-great because it’s only available online, doesn’t come pressed or tinted, and there are a number of health concerns.

The Estee Lauder powder is great because it’s readily available, comes in many shades, comes pressed and loose, gives a gorgeous glow, and there are no health concerns. It’s not-so-great because it’s more expensive, doesn’t absorb oil as well, and has a bit of a “makeup”-y smell to it.

    The descision is yours!
