Can it be May now, please? | Clarins Enchanted Summer

Because Clarins’ Summer 2012 collection, Enchanted Summer, hits counters May 1st.

    And is it ever stunning.

The inspiration: Voyage to the heart of India

Dare to sport a sunny complexion, intense eye make-up, and sparkling lip colour. This summer, Clarins Make-Up travels to the heart of India, an authentic voyage where traditional patterns and shimmery tones reign.

Once a year, from New Delhi to Pondicherry, India turns into a fabulous colour festival. The entire country resonates to the enchanting rhythms of the Holi Fest where vibrant pigments are used as symbols: green for harmony, red for joy and love, orange for optimism and blue for vitality. Happy Holi!

Enchanted Colour Quartet & Liner Palette

Do I even need to say it? This palette looks amazing, you guys. I’m a huge Clarins palette fan (as you all well know), so I’m itching to get my hands on this. Click on the image below to enlarge – after all, bigger is better, right?

    Kohl Kajal

This Limited Edition liner will be come in two colours (black and violet), promising creamy, intense, long-lasting colour both on the lashlines and waterlines.

I’ll hold my judgement on these until they come out – I haven’t found a kohl thus far that hasn’t disappointed me, so I’m hesitant to get excited this early on in the game.

    Bronzing Duo SPF 15

This Mineral Powder Compact – 100% Mineral Screen contains mineral-based SPF, white tea extract (to help combat against pollution), crowberry, & vitamin E (to fight free radicals). It’ll be available in three shades (LightMedium, and Dark), and to my knowledge, will be joining Clarins’ permanent line-up.

The best part? The compact will be lightly perfumed with the scent of Clarins’ Sun Care range – which I happen to love. Clarins; a brand after my own heart!

Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balm – new generation

Someone sound the alarm bells, a brand actually listened to its consumers! The Instant Smooth balms are back, and (just like we all wished for), they’re returning with an extra pigment punch.

Clarins is promising the world with these ones: “the colour of a lipstick, the transparency of a gloss, and the comfort of a lip balm.” Let’s hope they can deliver, yeah?

Note: only Crystal Violet and Crystal Coral will be available in Canada. If you’re dying for the red or pink shades, you’ll have to CP them from another country!

Blue double-winged eye makeup | Trip the Light Fantastic

Today, I wanted to share a look I did based off of the Sophie Ellis-Bextor Trip the Light Fantastic album cover. It’s one of my favourites – well worth listening to if you’re looking for dance-worthy British pop music – and Sophie always looks absolutely incredible (both in and out of her stunning Rimmel London campaigns)!

For this look, I tried to focus in on the bright, violet lip, super-contoured cheeks, and (most importantly), the gorgeous, double-winged blue eye makeup. Pair that with a double dose of Photoshop, and here are the results!

    A green-on-green makeup look

A number of you were quite excited for the Jealous Jordana feature, so I thought I’d work it into another look for you. (The review itself will be up later this week!) I find that a look based entirely on a shadow with such a blackened base looks too heavy on my lids, so I’ve used MAC Humid as the main lid colour… hope you like it!

    The eyes

Base and basics: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk (base), Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner in Zero (upper lashline, waterlines), Smashbox Matte Eyeshadow in Smoke (brows), Marcelle Liquid Eyeliner in Very Black (winged liner)

Eyeshadows: MAC Frost Eye Shadow in Humid (vibrant green), theBalm Shady Lady Eyeshadow in Jealous Jordana (blackened green), Lancome Eye Colour in Honeymoon (gold), MAC Matte2 Eye Shadow in Blanc Type (skin tone)

    Lips and cheeks

Lips: Clarins Crystal Balm in Crystal Coral (sheer coral; comes out in May)

Cheeks: MAC Blush Powder in Harmony and Smashbox Eye Shadow in Smoke (blended together to contour), Clarins Barocco Face Powder (peachy blush)

    Pink and violet Versace-inspired look

I’ve actually been doing a lot of looks recently, but for whatever reason, I feel like we haven’t posted one forever. So, to change that…

A few months back, I stumbled on the most gorgeous Versace dress while flipping through Monika Jagaciak images (LOVE her). I wanted to mimic the white/pink/violet gradient of the fabric, and added three tiny pieces of glitter to translate a sort of toned-down version of the sparkle. Here’s the dress:

    With love from theNotice

Wearing: MAC Blanc Type and a touch of Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin on the eyes, a touch of MAC Harmony and Lancome Rose Fresque on the cheeks, Hard Candy Glamoflauge and Marcelle Loose Powder as needed. Boring for the holidays? But of course!

[Insert different PC-approved phrase as is appropriate. Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah, something else entirely, or nothing at all, happy holidays my dear!]

P.S. I don’t really understand the word “holiday,” so I don’t expect there’ll be one. See you tomorrow!

    FOTD: Violet Royalty with Marcelle

Right this moment, I’m having a bit of a love-hate relationship with Marcelle. I mean, it’s mainly love, but there’s a little bit of hate and resentment packed in there too.

Why, you ask? Well, on one hand, they’ve created an amazing collection at mid-range / high-end drugstore prices. But on the other, this means that I’m going to have to recommend everything in my upcoming reviews, and you’re all going to (a) be broke and (b) hate me, or (c) not be able to find it and (d) hate me anyways.

They had to have known they were doing this to me! Marcelle, tu ne m’aimes pas encore? You’ve put me in such a tight fix!

(I might be less angry if their upcoming makeup collection was awesome but their new skincare additions sucked. Nope, no such luck… I love ’em all. But that’s another story for another day!)

    How-to:

Start by priming the eyes and skin. For the eyes, cover the lid with a wash of mid-toned red-violet. Then, use a fluffy brush to buff a deep indigo-violet into the outer V and slightly into the crease. Add a shimmery copper-pink to the center of the lid, and blend a dot of a neutral, shimmery pink-ivory to the inner corner. Finish with mascara and a bright, pigmented violet liner.

For the lips and face, tone down lips with a nude lipstick and top with a sheer pink gloss. Blot off the excess. Contour the cheekbones and add a matte, cool-toned pink for definition. Finally, blend a shimmery highlighter onto the tops of the cheekbones and finish with translucent powder.

    Eye close-ups:
(Sorry, the first one totally got butchered by the sunlight — I promise it wasn’t that harsh in real life!)

And  my left eye… I feel like I never photograph this one! The lighting was a little different, hence the tones. They’re a little farther from real life (I’m not quite as… pink… as my monitor is saying I am right now,) but the colours are just oh! so pretty. How could I resist sharing this photo?

    Serge Lutens Chergui

There are very few fragrances that have truly changed the way I view fragrance.

(You’re one of them, of course.)

Your dark brown liquid is housed in simple, rectangular glass, and it doesn’t seem like it would be fascinating. Slightly intriguing, perhaps, but certainly nothing spectacular. To be honest, at first glance, you’re quite unassuming — so when I breathed in, I was caught completely off guard.

You are incense, amber, tobacco leaf and musk, but the blend is divine. (Other scents, like your sibling Ambre Sultan, are too violent with their incense and send me running toward the hills.) Of course, these notes are sweetened just enough with tiny bits of smooth honey, and lightened with rose and iris. Don’t get me wrong, though; I am by no means insinuating in the least that there is anything floral or syrupy about you.

It must be difficult to produce a scent that is entirely unisex, but… you are. Fit for a man in a suit with a bit of stubble, smoking a cigar in a ritzy hotel bar; fit for a woman in a slinky dress with just a flick of eyeliner, out for dinner with a lover. Honey and hay sugar in perfect harmony with tobacco and musk.

I thought that I didn’t like warm scents, because warm scents are always so sweet. But I kept looking; I kept ignoring each and every saleswoman and salesman who told me that sweet and warm must go hand in hand. (And trust me, there were many.) The hours and hours of searching paid off when I found you, Chergui — warmth without the syrup of cheap vanilla, cozy without being cloying, dry and a little dirty without being animalic.

Of course, there are many categories of fragrance, and you can’t fulfill my cravings for a light floral or a salty chypre. But when I need something warm, something sexless — no, something above the lines of gender, — something perfectly crafted and rich and beautiful and incredible…

Well, that would be where you come in.

Availability: Chergui can be purchased online at shops like the ones above, or through BeautyEncounter and FragranceNet. Alternately, it can be sampled through The Perfumed Court. For my fellow Canadians, you may be able to find it in your local Sephora!

Chergui was created by Christopher Sheldrake in 2001.

Two very old FOTDs: Humidity rising // I’ve got the silver-blues

To be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of either of these looks — which is why it’s been over a year since these photos were taken, but I still hadn’t posted them. (Seriously, over a year. I was still using my old camera and not even considering buying a new one.)

I hate to let a good photo (or in this case, a bad photo) go to waste, though, so I’m throwing them out there! I’ll be trying  to clear out some of my epic photo backlog over the next month or so, which means that we’ll be able to put out more current material in the near future. Don’t worry, though — it won’t get in the way of regular posting :)

Hopefully, you’ll be able to use these images as colour inspiration despite the fact that they’re not my best work! I did both quite late at night, so by the time I took full-face shots the sun was setting. So, both have a bright-but-blurry sun-lit image and a couple with flash. I’ll try to make up for the image quality with angry quips, so buckle your seatbelts.

More of each (including full face shots and product listings) behind the cut!

    The green look

On occasion, our usually-boring sky looks ridiculously gorgeous for no apparent reason.
    I love it.
Not a great makeup shot, but I loved how my hair looked :P

    Used: green:
Stila Oil-Free foundation in shade B
Boots No. 7 Illuminating Concealer in II
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk.

    NARS Gina
    MAC Blacktrack
    MAC Plum Perfect
    Fyrinnae Polar Bear (gold)
MAC Mauvement (for the finish, probably?)
    MAC Humid (green)

    The blue look
I remember this looking really different with different angles and lighting, so I tried to capture that in the eye shots!
AHHH where is my shirt?! And why do I look like an alien?!
(Just kidding. You can see a bit of a strap here, but I think I switched it for a sweater for the other photos. Got cold, perhaps?)
(As for the looking like an alien… I’m still not sure.)
Should have left the tank top on. This shirt is low enough to make me uncomfortable.
YES I AM A PRUDE. HUSH.
On a more on-topic note; the inner corner hilight was actually very even. But, as I said, the whole look flashes very differently with different angles etc!
Remember when I didn’t smile for FOTDs? This was back when I usually didn’t.
So while I look a bit like I’m about to cry, cut me some slack! The effort was there!

    Used:

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk
    MAC Blacktrack

    Iman Rubor (pink cream blush)
    MAC Harmony (contour)
    Stila Vanilla (lip glaze)

Seven bronzers — just in time for summer!

Last summer, I brushed over two MAC bronzers. This summer, I’m one-upping myself (because my ego is that big I’m that awesome) and comparing seven of them for you.

    (You’re welcome.)

The downside is that I had actually taken these photos shortly after last summer’s bronzer post, so they’re really old. My apologies for the image quality; I was still using my old camera at that point! The other half of this downside is that the Victoria’s Secret (which I actually love) and Lancome (less love) have since been discontinued. So, um… sorry!

The products (photo without titles after the cut, if you’re interested. And as always, click to enlarge!)

    My picks:

The most orange, and longest-wearing — Lancome Photôgenic Bronzé
The best “healthy glow” — MAC Bronze
The best for versitality, for the price, and for the most skintones — Annabelle Golden Glow duo
The best for a bit more cash — MAC Bronze

[Sidenote: what I really like about the Annabelle duo and Bronze is that they can suit anything from an NC10 to an NW25, just by using more/less product. For instance, I’ll apply Bronze to my cheeks with a fan brush, but use a bronzer brush if I’m working on my mother!]

A face to last the whole night long

Prom’s coming up for my good friend Tess, so she had a makeup-related question for me. I’m just going to cut and paste the wall post below!

Hello my dear! I have a make up question for you. Prom is coming and I want a type of foundation, mascara, eyeshadow, liner that will last the night… do you have any brand suggestions?

Damn straight I have suggestions! I’m going to pretend I didn’t read the word “brand,” though, and I’ll grace over cheek products as well ;)

    Foundation

As you all know from yesterday’s review, I’m completely in love with Make Up For Ever Face and Body. However, I know she wouldn’t splurge on something like that — for starters, there’s no Sephora in her city, and her skin’s gorgeous enough that she doesn’t usually need wear-like-metal foundation! So, I’d go with something light- to medium-coverage.

Recommendations: I’d look for the best shade match for your skin, and give it at least two days’ trial run before an event. Some drugstore foundations to check out would be Maybelline SuperStay, perhaps, or Revlon Photo Ready (a MUFE HD “drugstore dupe.”) Optimally, though, I’d have Tess pick up samples of the correct shades in MUFE Face and Body and HD! They’d look lovely for the night, but not empty out her wallet or leave her with excess product.

Tips: Make sure to bring blotting tissue, and to powder! If I need something to wear for an insanely long time, I’ll actually powder twice — after my foundation has set, I’ll powder very lightly, spritz with a facial spray (or just water+glycerine in a 10:1 ratio in a spray bottle, which can be picked up at almost any dollar store,) then re-powder and re-spritz once that’s dried. Additionally, avoid foundations with SPF, and do a flash test of your foundation match as well as looking at it in different lighting!

    Lashes and lines

I love, love, love tubing mascaras. They won’t smudge, flake, or run on you, even if you get a little teary-eyed! We tried Fiberwig on Tess last summer, and it held up through hours of crying. (Though her liner did end up running anyways. There goes a bright white napkin!)

Recommendations: I’d look at Imju Fiberwig and L’Oreal Beauty Tubes for mascara, and GOSH Extreme Art Liners are the only option for your liner! (Seriously, that stuff is crazy.) Another option is something like Benefit’s She-Laq, which “seals in” liner and mascara in case of tears! (I haven’t tried this specific product, but a friend of mine uses it while [synchronized] swimming and says it’s wonderful.)

Tips: for an in-your-face fringe, layer your tubing mascara over something volumizing! Make sure to keep a lash comb at hand while applying, and try out the combination beforehand to see how it works. Also, keep q-tips in your clutch in case your liner does run, so you can clean it up without having to take everything off.

    Lids

One word: primer. I’d definitely go with something like Urban Decay Primer Potion or Too Faced Shadow Insurance, but if neither are accesable, a cream concealer or a layer of foundation plus a sweep of powder with do an okay job, too. (Just make sure they don’t leave a “slippery” finish, like some silicone-based liquids can!) As for shadow, stay away from creams if you’re not sure if they crease on you or not, and use what you already have.

Recommendations: I know Tess is set for shadows, but if all you have are powdery pans of chalkiness, you’ll want to pick up some new shadows! It’s hard to go wrong with a MAC quad or Dior quint, but I’d also recommend Annabelle trios for an awesome drugstore choice. If you don’t want to really invest in some good neutrals, trios, quads, and quints are a great way to get a little more bang for your buck!

Tips: stick with neutrals or subtle colours — this is not the time to go crazy with trend makeup! While it’s good to have fun with your shadows, remember that you’ll probably still have these photos fifty years down the road when all the styles have changed… and you have grandkids.

    Cheeks

I’d stick with matte or semimatte blush and contour, layer a powder over a cream (or use powder alone,) and be sure to flash-test your cheeks before leaving! Tess will probably be taking a lot of photos, so it would also be a great time for her to contour her cheeks… but if you do this, make sure it’s flawlessly blended and you’re comfortable with it.

Recommendations: none here; there are too many great cheek products out there! I do love MAC Harmony to contour, though, and I know that I’d for sure wear Rose Fresque.

Tips: while a subtle luminizer on the tops of your cheekbones will be gorgeous, a superfrosty cheek will look dated and unnatural in 95% of your photographs. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

That’s all for today — have fun at prom, love! Do you have any tips to share? Hit us up in the comments! Here’s a photo of the lovely Tess so you ladies can have an idea of what skintype, face shape, etc you’re recommending things for!
