    Foundation post! Of epic lengths!

WARNING: by the Korres review, this post ceases to make sense. I am so tired.
(So for those of you that just read theNotice because I am occasionally amusing, this would be one of those “occasionally amusing” posts. Stick with me and I am sure embarrassment will ensue.)

I’ve been trying to find a foundation recently (to no avail.) So here are three mini-reviews, and remember that I am always open to suggestions =P

What I was looking for: (I know — it’s quite the list!)

    • A medium-to-light finish
    • Liquid. Don’t even ask — I decided I wanted to try a liquid and there is no derailing me at this point!
    • Oil-absorbing properties for my t-zone!
    • A perfect or almost-perfect shade match
    • Not just a lightweight feel, but a finish that my fingers can’t feel if I touch my face

So here are the foundations: Stila Natural Finish Oil-Free, shade B; Korres Ginger & Vitamin in LF1; MAC Face & Body in C1.

    L-R: Stila, Korres, MAC
    (Yay for samples!)

    Stila Natural Finish Oil-Free
Unfortunately, when I got home, I found that this was the only foundation th
at actually matched my skintone — major bummer! At least one of them matched, though, right?

Price: $38US/$50CAD. Eff you, cosmetics industry. ($49US/oz, or $55CAD/oz.)
My shade: B. I really like the yellow undertones, especially as this doesn’t oxidise into an orange mess!
Ingredient summary: Lots of dimethicone(s), water based, generally just a nightmare.
Coverage: I’m trying to cover up acne scars without having to individually conceal each one — and this doesn’t quite do the trick. It’s nice if you don’t have any scarring or blemishes to cover up, but any more than that and you’ll still have to conceal. Medium-light coverage, I’d say.
Overall: This was a pretty good foundation, with a natural-feel finish and light-medium coverage. However, the huge price mark-up pisses me off, and it photographs strangely — check out this FOTD (especially this photo) to see it in action. There is a whitish cast to edges, and seeing as I’d be wearing this more than half the time solely for photography, it really doesn’t make sense for me.

    L-R: Stila, Korres, MAC
    Unblended swatches

    Korres Ginger & Vitamins
OHAY GUYS! SPF! I LOVES IT, I LOVES IT! (Yes, I’m an addict.)

Price: $28US/$36.50CAD (this works out to $21US or $27CAD/oz)
My shade: LF1. Except for how IT ISN’T. Because it’s a hair to dark, despite the fact that it’s the lightest shade, dammit! In and of itself, the shade is pretty solid — there are no super-strong undertones, so (combined with the sheerness of this foundation) it should work on everyone with this lightness of skin.
    Ingredient summary:
No parabens, but it has the breakout-inducing dimethicone. This makes it a write-off for me, but also makes it feel aaaahhhmazing! For a “natural/pure” foundation, there are a crapload of ingredients in this baby. (Holy crap, am I on drugs today? I feel like I’m on drugs today.)
Coverage: Pretty darn light. Unless your skin is already practically flawless, this probably won’t do the trick for you. It has about the same coverage as a tinted moisturiser, actually.
Overall: Good if… you’re a) allergic to parabens, b) fine with dimethicone, c) trying to find something that doesn’t smell awful, and/or d) looking for a tinted miosturizer with a feel that is comparable to heaven. Aside from that, it wasn’t super-exciting or anything.

    L-R: Stila, Korres, MAC
Blended swatches. If I was smart, I would have actually swatched these on someone else, so they would stand out more. Fail.

    MAC Face & Body
Often referred to as the holiest of grails (haha,) I had high hopes for this one! The bottle is freaking huge — it’s four ounces!! (For reference, the Stila was less than one ounce and the Korres was just over one ounce.)

Price: $32US/$38CAD, a markup which is totally decent. ($8US/$9.50CAD per ounce. Also known as A REALLY GOOD BUY.)
My shade: C1 is what I have, but I’ll be going back and hoping they have the w
hite one for some reason (though I doubt they will; I’m pretty sure it’s PRO-only) to lighten it just a touch.
Ingredient summary: Water based, no dimethicone — no complaints! The formula is very liquid, very thin, and feels like lotion.
Coverage: Much lighter than I had hoped — it has more coverage than the Korres, but less than the Stila (yes, even if I layer it.) I dislike the “dewy” finish it gives; I find the degree of dewiness is more like WHOA OILINESS… not pretty! This is easily dealt with, though. All you need is powder!
Overall: For the price, this is a total steal. If you’re going to set it with powder anyways, you can find your shade, and you’re looking for light-medium coverage, definitely check this out!

    L-R: Stila, Korres, MAC
Swatches (same as the other blended ones) but I’ve put them in boxes next to each other so you can see the shade differences.

The verdict? I’m not totally happy with any of these, so here’s a little table for ya:

If cost was not an issue, I’d buy the Stila. If breakouts were not an issue, it would be the Korres. However, with everything taken into consideration — if for whatever reason I had to buy a foundation tomorrow, I’d buy MAC Face & Body.

    An announcement

    Dimethicone breaks me out.

I don’t want to talk about it. It was my favourite skincare ingredient… until now, when I found out that it was what had been breaking me out.

(Only a beauty junkie would be this upset over something like this.)

On a scale of one to disastrous and awful, this is a six.

    Narciso Rodriguez for Her

The first time I smelled you, you hadn’t even been sprayed yet — what is it about you that is so strong that it makes you hang in the air for hours?

The second time I was ready. At first, on the blotter, you were nice. (And then five minutes later, I threw you out because you were boring as hell, and I was getting nauseous.)

The third time I was brave; I sprayed you on my wrist and prepared myself to spend the whole day with you. After the first few minutes I was done. I was right — you really are boring, aren’t you?

So I waited for you to fade.
But after about a half hour, your top notes started to drift off and I could smell your heart: a sharp floral was distinctly coming through. Pervasive vanilla. The musk and vetiver held strong to keep them in check. And yes, you were still overwhelming, and yes, I still felt a little sick… but I could see why people love you.

You keep it interesting. You shove a cold floral into a warm musk and you don’t apologize for it. Your masculine edge fades (fades, but does not disappear) and after the first hour I’m in love.

Of course, though, the first hour is hell. It is the height of generic perfumes and overtakes everything; even with just one spritz you are so strong eating is out of the question. But after that hour… once you begin to dry, I fall in love with you again. Eventually, at the very end, you take on almost soapy, clean qualities, and it’s as if you’re washing away all the confusion you display as you open.

(Let it be said, though, that while I think you are actually quite pretty and interesting, I wouldn’t buy a whole bottle of you to wear. You’re just not my type, darling, and you don’t last very long — I would expect more than five hours from a perfume with an opening as strong as yours!)

    Checking out a GOSH duo

What it is: a GOSH shadow duet in D 81 Golden/Chocolate. Can you believe that, with the 40% off sale (on top of the sale price, though I don’t know why the duos were on sale further) it was only $3.25?? In retrospect, I should have picked up more for stocking stuffers :P Made in Denmark, which I thought was kind of cool. The pigmentation: these shadows are fairly soft, with decent pigmentation — better than the GOSH quads, but not as good as the singles. This was nothing amazing, and if I had paid the regular $12.50 for this I would have been disappointed. However, at $3.25 it was a great buy. I’d put this on par with the famed Maybelline quads (the “good ones,” though, as I know some of the quads are better than others,) maybe a tiny bit better, but certainly not as good as MAC or (my favourite) Senna shadows. The shades: see for yourself! I love both these shades, and you could definitely do a whole neutral eye with just this duo. On their own, one is a gorgeous nude and the other a rich chocolate… mixed together, they’re a pretty brown-taupe. (These swatches were done dry directly on my arm — no base — with a fingertip, and I had to go over each two or three times to get this level of pigmentation.)

Wow, this is a dark swatch… sorry guys! I haven’t seen the sun forever:(

    The verdict?
So worth it for $3.25, but the most I think I’d pay for the duos is about $6. Catch them on sale and they will serve you well!

    For shame, MAC.

Charging $23.50 for your “Care Blends Essential Oils“? Really? The Care Blends will be released with the Warm & Cozy collection on the 26th of December in Grapefruit + Chamomile and Sweet Orange + Lavender, but I’d advise you to keep an tight fist on your Christmas money. Here are the two things that may happen:

    • The essential oils are neither essential nor purely oil, and are not dupe-able at home because MAC has added filler substances to reduce cost stylishly take the edge off the delicious grapefruit scent offensive fragrances.
    • The essential oils are just essential oils, and can be replicated using the two essential oils in the name (you can find them in your local Whole Foods-esque store) and an eyedropper. Total cost: about $10 instead of $23.50, plus you can bet on ending up with at least double the product.

I’ll have to see them in person first, but my money’s on option #2 — so get to your local organic store and blend your OWN oils, please!! Don’t cave to the pretty packaging presented by MAC.

    D&G L’Imperatrice

You were a disappointment. A damn fine shame.

There is a fruity, sweet opening (but really, that’s not hard to find in fragrance) and for a few moments I almost believe you will lose your sweetness as you dry down, and let me enjoy the fruit. But you never do. You don’t lose your candied edge until right before you are completely faded, and at that point one has to inhale you directly off the skin. (No one wants to treat their perfume like heroin.)For a unisex scent there is too much femininity in you — you smell like youth, with the naiveté but without the innocence. And yes, you should in some way be commended for this… your sweet, fruity bouquet is likely attractive to the large part of modern female society.

At the same time, however, this should shame you. It’s nice, light enough to be appropriate anywhere, and very true to itself. You are, in a way, too true to yourself. There is nothing underneath your exterior or the pink of your bottle, there is nothing surprising or addictive hidden in your formula.

You’re wonderful for occasional wear when I wake up before my alarm clock, already buzzed. Your clarity is perfect when my mind is as well, but there is nothing about you that makes me think. I can imagine your brilliance should you be layered overtop something with depth, but on your own you are the air trapped in the champagne; a fruit without a body and a fragrance without a soul.I would like to smell you on a man, one bold and unabashedly masculine, no vague suggestion of an attraction to males. (It’s nothing personal; rather, if a feminine male wore you, you would continue being just as boring.) Just a light spritz, layered over a scent more masculine… I think it may give you that certain delicious who have you been with?

Or you may just continue on with your syrupy static.

    Simple lavender eye

Just a quick, easy, boring lavender eye for you today. This was actually the look that I was doing when I figured out this Blacktrack trick — and that’s all it is. MAC Blacktrack, Senna Fantasy, and Rimmel Lycra Lash topped with Imju Fiberwig. Plus some hilight on the inner corners; a mix of Lancome Crème Lustré and Angora. Besamé Vanilla on the lips, and a super-sheer dusting of Lancome Pink Fresque on the cheeks. All you need is five minutes and two shadows, and ta-da! You’ve got a look.

    More guest posting

Here‘s a post from the week before last that I forgot to tell you wonderful ladies about — it’s a review of a cute little gloss/liner duo that’s a total steal! Sorry this wasn’t posted sooner; I totally forgot about it.

Also, this week’s post on lip changes. I have a couple more images that I’ll post beneath the cut; they’re those creepy lip swatches that are wonderful for colour and texture representation but terrible on the eyes. Tried. Failed. No cut for you!

They’re in the same order as they occur in the post on Karen’s site, but I’ll label them anyways:

Paul Dorf Voodoo [unsuccessfully] topped with Aura Science Star Coral.

    MAC Dubonnet over Voodoo.

Dubonnet and Voodoo topped with Sephora’s Bronzed Beauty gloss.

So I finally went to the mall yesterday…

I really needed some new clothes — I’m not really a fan of shopping, so I generally avoid it like the plague until I absolutely have to go!

At H&M, I found the fabric that I’ve been desperately hunting down… it’s a thick, stretchy cotton, and I bought a purple tee of said fabric at H&M last June or so, right before I left for Quebec. I never thought I’d see it again, because the next time I got to an H&M, all the tees were in a thinner fabric, with a different cut!

But I did =D So I bought three more of the same tee (black, dark blue, and a backup purple one because it is my FAVOURITE SHIRT EVER) and one more of the same body cut and fabric, but with long sleeves (in a different dark blue.) I also found the perfect black dress shirt, which everyone told me didn’t exist! It’s a slightly stretchy cotton, black, fitted, and with a curved bottom (as opposed to a straight hem.) Even the sleeves fit — sleeves almost never fit me!

Yes, I’m a little bit of a freak. Because now I have, basically, five of the same shirt. And I LOVE IT.

    Verdict: success.

    Other updates:

    • Re-smelled Miss Dior Cherie. I’m in love! I always though it was a scent I couldn’t wear, but it definitely is. Wearable.
    • Dealt with a lot of really inappropriate sales clerks. Hilarious!
    • Winners -> Urban Decay glosses (for $5!!!), Paula Dorf lipsticks, Bliss “The Youth As We Know It” eye cream, Nicole by OPI polishes… the list goes on!
