Yes, I re-did the layout again.

I know; I need to find the perfect one and settle down! But as you all know by now, I’m terrible with commitment. It’s hard for me to pick a blush for the day, much less a layout to stick with for months on end! I think this is going to be it for a while, though — there were a number of changes that I wanted to make, and I completed all but one of them.

(Does anyone want to give me a quick tutorial on the easiest way to change to a “real” url? Because I’m way too intimidated to even try; hence the still being on blogger.)

Anyhow, there is a reason for this post aside from pointing out the obvious! What series, tags, or single posts would you put in “THE ALL ACCESS GUIDE TO THENOTICE“? I’ve chucked in a few to get it started, but please let me know in the comments if I’m missing anything! Additionally, feel free to rage on me if you’re upset that I’ve switched to three columns ;) You better have a good reason for being angry, though!

Bonus photos: some of our old headers! I can’t believe it’s already been so long.

    TMI Time: Douches

You know what I miss? When theNotice was a little more personal — every Friday used to be “YOU Fridays,” and I’d get a chance to ask you guys about stuff, and talk about things, and just generally dick around for a day form important personal relationships instead of staying even vaguely on-topic writing on the subject of beauty.

But I digress! In an effort to bring back the superpersonal (“super” because — let’s be frank — I’m already making large efforts to keep theNotice inappropriately personal-blog-like for a beauty blog,) I’m going to try to bring back more YOU and TMI Time features. Good stuff, right?

Today isn’t about douches in the sense of the word where it actually refers to an object. Rather, we’re talking about the more common modern definition — and yes, you all know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s a TMI Time topic that (surprise!) isn’t related to inappropriate body parts! Click your way behind the cut to see what it is.

(Caution, an overuse of brackets and quotation marks lies ahead.)

    The prompt is simple:

Even if you know it’s awful, are you attracted to guys (or girls) that are complete douches?

The reason behind this is a little more complicated actually, also pretty simple: one of my friends has a thing for a guy who I happen to think is a total jerk. (I feel okay saying this to the general public because (a) I’m not naming names, (b) this applies to way too many people, and (c) she knows I think he’s a dick. To be totally honest, (d) she thinks he is as well.)

I’m not going to get all pious on your asses and tell you you’re living your lives wrong, but I’m absolutely certain that the answers coming in will almost all be “yes”. Heck, my answer would be a “yes” as well! It’s exemplified by the fact that I’m aware I usually have shitty tastes in guys, which just makes the whole situation kinda shitty, and thus, I’m making an honest effort to change it — but my “type” has the sole stipulation of “isn’t boring,” and unfortunately, all most of the guys who aren’t boring are only interesting because they’re emotionally unavailable jerks.

And if they’re not, they’re usually taken.

    Or gay.

    Or both.

(You know what I hate? The fact that so many gorgeous, hilarious, non-assholes are into other guys. I mean, that’s just not fair!)

(Then again, it makes sense that if they’re attractive on a level of 11 out of 10,  they’d want to date other elevens, and seeing as we’ve just concluded that most elevens are other gay males — or celebrities [again, the “or both” clause applies,] — they don’t have a heck of a lot of choice.)

I’m kind of taking away the effect of this super-serious and totally-focused post, so I’m going to shush now and let you answer. As usual, I’ll promt you with this: Discuss! Today, though, I really do mean discuss. I’ll moderate things as quickly as possible, even if that means I can’t reply to them at the same time. Why? The reason is simple — because I’m not the only one here! By “discuss,” I don’t just mean “tell me.” I mean “talk to each other,” too. You are all lovely, and as long as you don’t turn my comments thread into a gross, dirty fighting pit that is infested with bugs*, it’s all good. Have fun, with or without me!

*The clean kind is okay. However, all clothes must stay on, and if you bleed, CLEAN IT UP. With bleach, preferably. Thank you.

Biore wants you to preserve your skin

What it is: Biore‘s SkinPreservation Dual Fusion Moisture Lotion + SPF 30

The feel + moisture factors: The moisture factor isn’t something to complain about, but it’s not totally fabulous, either. While I was using this, I needed a heavier moisturizer at night, though it was fine for the daytime! I think it would be fine for anyone with slightly-dry to oily skin. This strange white-and-green mixture looks like an Asian dessert sinks in like a dream, and kept me a lot less oily than the moisturizer I had been using previously (Olay Complete for Sensitive Skin lotion.)

The other factors: What initially attracted my attention to this one was the SPF — it’s hard to find a good lotion with anything over SPF15, at least in the drugstore! SPF 30 definitely put it in my good books, and it’s the reason why I think the price (about $15) is still pretty damn reasonable, even for just 50ml. What held my attention, though? Well, the packaging is awesome (and hygienic,) the lotions smells lovely (but fades, instead of inducing migraines,) the SPF doesn’t flash out in photographs… y’know. Pretty much everything about it did the holding!

The one problem you might run into is that the two sides don’t always dispense evenly at first; to get around this, hit it on the countertop a few times (hard, and make sure it’s landing flat!) Then, pop off the lid and pump the sides separately to get them both flowing, before putting the pump-lid-thingy back on. They tell you to pump 7-9 times to get both going; I say that’s a waste of product! (Yep, I’m cheap like that.)

    (Not a scary monster.)

And, the ingredients — it’s quite the list!

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Zinc oxide 3.9%, octinoxate 3.0%.
INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Water, cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone, glycerin, isohexadecane, aluminum starch octenylsuccinate, butylene glycol, phenyl trimethicone, cetyl-pg hydroxyethyl palmitamide, camellia sinensis leaf extract, nymphaea coerulea flower extract, melissa officinalis leaf extract, hordeum distichon (barley) extract, disodium rutinyl disulfate, PEG-3 dimethicone, polyacrylamide, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer, C13-14 isoparaffin, sodium stearoxy PG-hydroxyethylcellulose sulfonate, dimethicone/methicone copolymer, laureth-7, propylene glycol, iron oxides, disodium EDTA, 1,2-hexanediol, caprylyl glycol, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, tropolone, fragrance, Green 5, Yellow 5, Green 3.

The verdict? While I’m not using this anymore (‘cones,) I would definitely recommend it… and I have been recommending it; like crazy! If you’re not on my diet with me, and you’re looking for a new moisturizer with SPF for the summer, please do give this one a try. I love it!

Did Rimmel’s new lipsticks Renew my faith in the drugstore?

(Hint: the answer is “no.” But this is related directly to the fact that said faith needed no renewing in the first place. As long as Annabelle exists, I will have faith!)

(On a completely unrelated note, has anyone ever seen Doubt? I watched a play version of it last year at the Citadel, and loved it.)

What it is: Rimmel‘s new Moisture Renew lipsticks

The lipstick itself: Unfortunately, I didn’t find this formula too terribly moisturizing — but it didn’t strip my lips, either. The formula does seem to stay consistent between the shades, though, which is lovely! I like being able to trust a specific line of lipstick to feel a certain way… more on that at a later date. The formula consistency of the new Maybelline lipsticks? Mm, notsomuch.

    Left:Pink Star. Right: Soft Coral.

Sadly, these are quite scented, and it smells… well, kinda like sunscreen. I wasn’t a fan, but I tried out Karla’s nifty de-scenting trick, and it seemed to make them bearable! (Without the trick, I couldn’t take it — the scent was migrane city for me, and it didn’t fade, even after an hour of wear.) An open tube + forty eight hours = a decent solution to the problem.

    Pink Star, swatched very heavily

    Pink Star, swatched lightly

Because my lips are so dry, and because I rub them together all the time (I know, bad habit!) it can be hard for me to find lipsticks that wear well. Normally, after fifteen minutes or so, the colour is a) all over my lipline and nowhere else, or b) bunched up on the dry patches of my lips, and nowhere else! The colour of these stays right where it belongs, though, which makes me one happy camper.

(Another thing that makes me happy? These have SPF18 worked into the formula! While it’s not exactly sunscreen for your lips, it’s a whole heck of a lot better than nothing.)

    Soft Coral, swatched very heavily

The shades: I tested out Soft Coral and Pink Star… and hated them both. They’re light- to medium-coverage and packed full of chunky shimmer, which felt gritty and seemed to migrate outside of my lip area (even though the colour stayed in place.) But while I didn’t like these two specifically, I still think the line is worth checking out — some of the other shades look great, and the lipstick (with the glitter not considred) feels slippery. (In a good way. You know how moisturising lipsticks have that “slip” to them? Well, though these weren’t very moisturising, they did have that feeling!)

    Soft Coral, swatched lightly

The packaging: While I’m normally a huge supporter of anything shiny and violet, I don’t quite love these tubes. The plastic crystal effect is cute, but the material itself feels light and cheap. But, to each their own! The plus side of this is that the packaging itself is pretty light, making it easier to chuck an inappropriate number of lipsticks in your bag.

(Because you never know — you cold totally spill tomato juice on your blouse at lunch and have to change into a different coloured shirt, which would obviously require a different lipstick.)

The verdict? If you’re looking for an SPF-infused (can I even say that?) lipstick for the summer and you’re okay with a light sunscreen-y scent, check these out… but swatch them in-store first if you can! The shiny finish is lovely, the shade selections great (there’s twenty-four of them!) and the price (about $6 if I’m not mistaken?) is easy on the eyes. What is that — like, one large latté?

I’d definitely recommend reading Karen’s review here. The three shades she tried are different, and they look fab!

    An Annabelle giveaway!

As you all know, I rave about Annabelle makeup constantly. Especially for a drugstore line, I think the quality is incredible. And, of course, I always feel guilty, because I know many of you live outside of Canada and it’s hard to get your hands on Annabelle products.

Well, I have a bit of a problem: I have some of their new mineral products sitting on my desk, but a) I know that the foundation will be too dark, and b) I’ve never been a bronzer fan. Seriously, I don’t wear the stuff. Ever.

The solution? It’s time for another giveaway! The winner will receive one (1) Mineral Powder Foundation in Barely Beige and one (1) Powder Bronzer in Terra. This giveaway is open internationally!

    To enter…

    1) Leave a comment telling me three Annabelle items you’d buy. Whether that’s three different products or one product in different shades is up to you!
Here‘s a link to their homepage, and here‘s a link to Annabelle reviews + swatches on theNotice.

    OR

    2) Follow theNotice. It just takes a click of a button ;) Leave a comment or shoot me an email (ethicnote [at] gmail [dot] com) to let me know if you’re following, new or old!

    For an extra entry…

    3) If you’re outside of Canada, leave another comment with the country you live in. We can find Annabelle in any drugstore, so I want to give those who can’t buy it on a whim better chances of getting to try it!

I will not be emailing the winner — instead, I’ll give you ten days to enter, announce the winner (at midnight GMT -07:00 on May 23rd/24th,) and wait for the winner to email me their mailing address. They’ll have a week (7 days) to do so, so make sure to check your feeds or pop by theNotice around then!

(I’m not just doing this because I’m lazy [though I am;] I’m doing this so that I can make sure the giveaway goes to someone who reads theNotice on a regular basis, and not just someone popping by for the giveaway. These goodies should go to someone who’s been craving some Annabelle for a while now!)

Personally, I think I’d choose a Le Gloss Stick (maybe in Guava Girl,) a Rouge Velours (in a creamy my-lips-but-better shade,) and either a Smudgeliner or a Smoothliner (in Rich Chocolate or Brownie, respectively.*) I can’t wait to read your choices!

*I just found out that these are both paraben-free. Excited? Why yes, yes I am! I have no idea why so many Annabelle products are paraben free (for instance, the Rouge Velours and entire mineral line are as well,) but I’m so not complaining!

    A Hello-Kitty-for-MAC-inspired tutorial

Here’s the tutorial for the Hello Kitty Wild eye — check out the final product here! If you’re just interested in finding out what I used, feel free to skip down to the bottom for a condensed “products used” list. Remember, all images can be clicked to be enlarged!

    Step One
Prep the area. Conceal lid completely to disguise veins, or use a flesh-toned primer. Fill in brows. (Note: my lashes are already curled and have mascara on them. This isn’t recommended, it’s just because I did this EOTD at the end of the day… and I’m lazy!)

Try: Bare Study Paint Pot, Bare Canvas Paint, UDPP in Eden
Used: TheBalm TimeBalm, Aura Science fill powder

    Step Two
Using a liner brush, “etch out” the violet area, forming a guide.

    Try: any not-too-pigmented violet!
Used: Elizabeth (self-mixed, and self-named, unfortunately.)

    Step Three
With a flat shader brush, fill in the violet areas. Foil the other triangle for intensity, and blend out the inner corner well (to create more sheen than colour.)

Try: MAC Grape pigment, Urban Decay Flash, MAC Satellite Dreams, MUFE Star Purple 142
    Used: Annabelle Violet Vibe

Sidenote: whenever I use Annabelle pigments, I feel a bit like a drug addict. Anyone else with me on this?

Another sidenote: I somehow managed to skip step four while labelling my photos… so, for continuity’s sake, I’ll skip it in the tutorial as well. Maybe I secretly am doing more with my pigments than applying them.

    Step Five
Fill in the middle “gap” with a melon, bronze, or champagne, pressing in the colour with an all-over eye brush. Then, clean the excess off the brush, and use it to buff out the edges of the violet areas.

    Try: MAC Melon, Stila Kitten
    Used: Melonite (again, self-mixed.)

    Step Six
Line upper lashes with liquid, winging outwards. I love a dramatic-but-fairly-thin line with false lashes! For a “day look,” this would be my last step, and I’d finish with mascara and concealer.
(See that sudden change in overall image tone? Yep… that was the sun totally giving out on us.)

Try: LORAC Front of the Line PRO, MAC Penultimate
Used: Lancome Artliner (highly recommended for this look — I can’t get enough of the patent finish!)

    Step Seven
Deepen the crease… if you have one. Then, with a dark plum shadow and a soft angled liner brush, create a thin veil of dark pigment on the outer 1/3 of your undereye. (This step was not on the face chart, but I added it to emphasize the lower lashes.) Do not blend this colour into the upper shadows.
When complete, use makeup remover to clean up the rest of the undereye area and conceal.

Try: MAC , Korres Plum, Tarina Tarantino Beaded
Used: MUFE 92 blended into Aura Science Black Plum

    Step Eight
Add those false lashes! If desired, add mascara to blend your actual lashes into your falsies.

Try: For the top — MAC 4 lash, MAC 7 lash (a naturalish lash keeps the focus on the bottom!)
Try: For the bottom — MUFE 130 Jennifer, MUFE 23 Renee, Illamasqua 017 (try to pick something full, but with longer pieces, then trim to fit.)
Used: Unnamed lashes on the bottom, Revlon Defining lashes on the top. (The latter lashes have been trimmed quite a bit, though!) Duo lash adhesive, clear.

Check out the finished look here!

    Products used:

TheBalm Time Balm, Lighter Than Light
    Aura Science brow fill powder
Duo lash adhesive / Revlon Defining lashes / Unnamed false lashes

    Lancome Artliner
    Elizabeth and Melonite home-pressed pigments
Aura Science Black Plum shadow / MUFE 92 shadow
    Annabelle Violet Vibe

A take on MAC’s Hello Kitty "Stylin’" look

So I took some time from studying in order to play with a facechart I had bookmarked ages ago, when Hello Kitty had launched. It was going well, really well… until, partway through taking photos for the tutorial, the sun set.

    The audacity! How dare it?!

So, the photos for the tutorial will be a touch more decent. (Just kidding; they suck too. I got about three photos in before realizing there wasn’t enough natural light to be taking photos.) For now, though, you’ll just have to live with flash photographs and artificial lighting! Unfortunately, the brightening and colour-adjusting took most of the “pop” out of these images — especially from the gorgeous violet :( I guess I’ll just have to do another EOTD with Violet Vibe sometime soon!

I took final shots of this eye twice — once with just bottom lashes, and once with top and bottom lashes. (I much prefer the eye with both sets of lashes, of course!)

Interested in a photo tutorial? Check it out here!

Behind the cut: an obscene number of images, all of which are larger than the one above and can be clicked for enlargement to 700px across. Falsies do this crazy thing to me… wherein I take way too  many photos, and post just a tenth of the ones taken, if even. Oh, how I wish I could have taken these with proper lighting!

    Just the bottom lashes:

    Both sets of lashes:
(The first photo is the best representation of the shadow placement; the last photo is the best representation of colour.)

One (huge) reason to love the Marcelle site:

I really don’t have anything to say about this aside from awesome. I just noticed this, and I think it’s amazing! (Click on the image to be taken to the page on the site.) As someone who’s avoiding ‘cones, with a sister who’s allergic to chemical sunscreens and parabens… this page will probably be taking a lot of the hassle of finding new products off my shoulders.

The only thing I’d change? Allow for multiple selections, so I can avoid all the things we’re allergic to with just one search ;)

    New at… Sephora

I love the packaging of fresh’s new Supernova Radiance Brightening pen! (Then again, I love 95% of their packaging…)

Here’s not one, but two new Sephora palettes that certainly look intriguing! I love the brights of the EDUN Contrast palette, and the new Artist palette is just gorgeous. (The first Artist palette looks intriguing as well, though the second — the Warm one — seems a little blah.)

This new NARS lip treatment needed a mention, of course. I personally don’t like paying a ton for sheer products, but I get the logic — perhaps it’ll be incredibly comfortable to wear? (Plus, they’re wonderful for trying out new lip colours, like dark reds or hot pinks.)

And a NARS primer — the fact that it’s a potted creme (rather than a gel or a cream, like most primers) makes me think of Clarin’s incredibly popular Instant Smooth, or L’Oreal’s Magic Perfecting Base.)

Tarte put out a new gel liner. With the number of drugstore choices (that are more than decent,) nowadays, though, I’m not quite so sure that this one will fly off the shelves.  Mind you, it does have quite a few things going for itself! Paraben-free, lovely packaging, a cute little dual-ended brush…

However, what’s more exciting is their new primer! Two words, babe: silicone-free =D

Finally, we have a Make Up For Ever set. While I can’t use it myself (silicones in the primer,) I couldn’t help but suggest it to you ladies — I adore silica powder, and the serum sounds great! (I haven’t truly tried it yet, but I’ve applied it to my hand on multiple occasions in Sephora and loved the feel. It’s quite taught and smooth, and comes sans the ‘cones found in most items. Plus: the awesome packaging!)
