Clinique Black Honey Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad review, photos, swatches

Of all the products in Clinique’s The New Black collection, this is the one I was looking forward to the least. So, of course, (in true Rae fashion,) it’s the one I fell in love with.

And oh, what a complicated love it is.

The product: Clinique Black Honey Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad

I know that we normally do section-breakdown reviews, but this one needs a little bit more of a ramble. I hope you’ll excuse the lack of structure!

First things first, I want to say that the Black Honey concept translates beautifully into an eyeshadow quad. Like the lipstick, this quad is best suited to light or medium complexions, really excels at flattering warm skintones, and offers a translucent wash of colour. However, I’m using terms like “best” and “excels” with a very specific intent: it really is phenomenal for them, but it can do so much more!

Personally, I find that the Black Honey Almost Lipstick doesn’t sit quite right with my complexion – I’m too pale and too cool-toned for it. This quad, however, is a different story entirely. The shades are warm, but they’re just the right kind of warm, and unlike the lipstick and blush, this quad isn’t at all difficult for me to pull off. If you ask me, this quad is the most universal product of the collection, and I think it’ll suit the broadest range of complexions.

This is my first Clinique quad (I know, that fact is blowing me away, too), and one thing in particular that stuck out to me is the fact that it’s clear-backed. Which, for the record, is brilliant. Clinique presses its eyeshadows into coordinating plastic pans, and it makes it incredibly easy to identify the quad in an instant.

Like the shadows, not all of the plastic pans have the same finish to them: only two of the four, really, are shimmery. I’ve mentioned before how much I love palettes with mixed finishes, and this is no exception! Often, I find that the more you mix your finishes, the more depth you get out of the palette (and the more versatility it tends to have).

    This palette contains:

    • a super-sheer, shimmery ivory,
    • a metallic-finish (think MAC’s Frost eyeshadows) taupey brown,
    • a warm, satin-matte orangey-brown with fuchsia (yes, fuchsia!) sparkles interspersed, and
    • a rich chocolate brown with gold and pink shimmer.

The verdict? (aka “the big however“)

Despite everything I love about this… I’m going to have to recommend that you pass on it.

Yes, I just said “pass on it.”

The thing is, this palette features three unexpectedly lovely eyeshadows, but it also has one that’s extremely disappointing. Not even just sub-par, but flat out extremely disappointing. I mean, I get why companies insist on putting highlighters in every single palette, but if it’s so sheer it won’t even show up on an NC15, why bother? Sometimes I’ll excuse the sheerness if the highlighter has a really gorgeous duochrome, or a sheen, or even just really pretty shimmer, but this is just – well, it’s just some barely-there sparkles.

So: if you love the look of the Black Honey palette, and you’re willing to accept the fact that the ivory’s more or less a nonentity, then go for it. The other three shades definitely do not disappoint! But, in terms of a cost-to-product ratio, just know that this one’s really only delivering on 75% of its promises.

P.S. The dark brown’s a little on the dry side, so be prepared to put a little extra elbow grease into using it. If you’re in a hurry, it still looks good used normally, but if you have the time – take an extra minute to “press and smudge” the colour on before blending. The results are very much worth the effort!

    Midweek products | New 21/09/11

I know, I know, we just did one of these ten days ago, but there have just been SO many launches recently! Anyhow, give this post a skip if you’re not interested (I think we’ll put up a Caudalie review in a few, maybe?) but for those of you who are

    Nieman’s Dior Nail Bar

    Enough said.

(Actually, that’s not true, I do have one more thing to say: I have no idea how that lipstick got in there. But I cannot make it go away.)

    MAC

God, I just – too many collections to deal with. Styledriven and Posh Paradise are the two coming out right about now, right? I don’t know; all I really care about is the fact that the Pro Longwear Eyeshadows and Lipsticks look amazing. Collection, smollecckshum!

Right now, I’m dying to try on Soft Sell and Till Tomorrow, but I’m never quite sure when it comes to Christine’s swatches: that woman’s lips could make me want anything, I swear!

Mmmm, and the Matchmaster foundation, which sounds absolutely fab (shade range in particular.) It’s a shame the formula contains ‘cones!

Just… stuff. You know, the stuff-like stuff.

    This week’s steals

The widget above was getting rather full, so I thought maybe we’d separate these out – just a few great deals. Hello, $8 NARS eyeshadows!

P.S. I’m starting to compile “New…” posts for holiday collections, too. Can I just say that there are some really exciting things coming out this winter?! I mean, this. This. This! /flail

The New Black – or, perhaps, the gorgeous new brown | A Clinique Black Honey makeup look

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was a girl who didn’t love Clinique Black Honey.

You can read the rest of that story here, but the important stuff is going to be in this post. Well – this post, plus a few more, but those ones haven’t happened yet so we can only allude to them for now.

Like the iconic Almost Lipstick, I think the eyeshadow quad and blusher are best suited for warm-toned skin, but that’s not to say they’re not gorgeous on cooler tones as well! I paired this look with MAC Teddy instead of the Black Honey Brush-On Cream Liner – the cream liner is just so hyped; I’m terrified to try it. (Because, well, what if I don’t like it?! It would crush my cream liner dreams.)

Anyhow, I’m happy to report that the eye khol, which I’ve reviewed previously, pairs just as well with the quad as expected (if not better). A review for the quad’s upcoming, but for those of you on the fence about it: if you love Teddy, you’ll love this quad. Honestly, the two are like peas in a (very pretty) pod!

Coming up later today (whenever the internet decides to stop being sketchy)

It was a coin-toss between Clinique Lid Smoothies and Clinique Black Honey, but I think we’ll go with the makeup look (BH) rather than the swatches (LS). Though, you’ll see those soon, too!

(What can I say; I’m in a Clinique mood today. And I want to go outside; it’s deliciously sunny! But instead I’m in here, studying the evolution of the brain, and asomatognosia, and Nissl stains, and telencephalons and diencephalons and aaaaaaHHHHHHHHhhhhh I’m in over my head with this course.)

Get on board for sight | L’Occitane and ORBIS

There’s a lot about L’Occitane that I simply didn’t know – and, of course, undoubtedly even more that I still don’t know. Today, I found out that the brand partakes in a large amount of charitable work through the L’Occitane Foundation, focussing (currently) on supporting the visually impaired, facilitating the economic emancipation of women in Burkina Faso, and the preservation of the knowledge of nature.

The brand is pairing once again with ORBIS, a non-governmental organization that focuses on fighting avoidable blindness and helping to eradicate and treat eye diseases in India, Bangladesh, and Burkina Faso. Read more about ORBIS {here}, or about about L’Occitane’s support of the visually impaired {here}.

Two charitable products will be launching, inspired by the ORBIS plane: a pink, floral bar (grape, blackcurrant, and white rose), and a fresh, blue bar (verbena, lemon, and grapefruit.) Keep an eye out for these two shea-butter-enriched soaps!

NYFW: the look to love | Callula Lillibelle Spring 2012

If you’re going to emulate just one look this Fashion Week, let it be this one! I’m loving this low-maintenance (but high-impact) look created by José Rivera and the rest of the Sephora PRO Team for Callula Lillibelle.

Unlike a lot of the looks that grace the runway (hello, Chris Benz), this one’s totally street-ready, and I’m hoping to see more of it as Spring rolls around. (We do have to get through Autumn and Winter first, but really: that’s just semantics). The look included glowing, bronzed skin, a naturally glossy eye, and a brilliantly vibrant orange-fuchsia lip.

    The Face

For a seamless, glowing base, the artists used MAKE UP FOR EVER Mist & Fix to prep the skin, layered on Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 and MUFE HD Invisible Cover Concealer for a perfect base, and set the look with a dusting of Smashbox HALO Hydrating Perfecting Powder.

Then, to really “wake up” the models’ complexions, they added Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder under the eyes to reflect light, Laura’s Bronzer Veil around the perimeter of the face and under the cheekbones, and Lorac Blush in Peach to add a bit of colour.

(The bronzer is featured in Laura’s Bonne Mine palette, which I believe is limited edition but currently available. For a similar creme bronzer, try something like the NARS Laguna Multiple or Too Faced Aqua Bunny Bronzer.)

    The Eyes

To create depth, the PRO Team used layered the deepest shade in the No. 4 MUFE 5 Camouflage Cream Palette with Birthday Suit from the Too Faced Naked Eye Palette in the crease. Then, tokidoki Prisma Lip Gloss in Donutella was applied to the lids to create a glossy eye.

The eyes were finished with Lancome Definicils Mascara and Anastasia Brow Gel in Clear.

    The Lips

And finally, the star of the look! Rivera and team used shade #005, Fuchsia Pink, from the MAKE UP FOR EVER 12 Flash Color Palette to create a rich base colour. (If you don’t want to buy the whole palette, try Rouge Artist Intense in 36, a satin fuchsia, or Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in Fuschia 16C, a bright fuschia pink, instead.)

To complete the lip look, the artists mixed together two shades of Stila Long Wear Lip Color and applied them on top: Exhilarating, a bright matte fuchsia, and Outrageous, a deep matte orange. Ridiculously gorgeous, right?

    Three new fragrance trailers

It’s becoming quite a thing, isn’t it? These little mini-films that accompany launches. Well; I’m certainly not complaining!

    Lancome Trésor Midnight Rose

I was really quite looking forward to the Trésor Midnight Rose film with Emma Watson, but I don’t know – now that it’s out, I’m not really feeling it. It’s gorgeous, of course, but it just seems too… expected. Girl meets boy, boy loses girl, boy miraculously runs into girl again in a big city, girl and boy falls in love.

Because that hasn’t been in a the ad copy for a hundred fragrances before.

But, I do like the slightly edge to the vibe of the film, and Emma looks amazing (as always)! Thoughts? (Is it maybe a little too violet? I don’t think I’ve ever said that before – but this one feels a little too violet! Or perhaps it’s just the fuchsia undertones that are getting to me.)

    Dior J’Adore

Another much-anticipated recent release was the new Dior J’Adore spot, with Charlize Theron. And it did not disappoint! It’s just as riveting and glamorous as their first commercial together, and the CG in the clip is absolutely flawless – not to mention, it’s absolutely ingenious.

It’s easy to do the expected with fragrance trailers, but I honestly think this one is spot-on. I mean, I, for one, totally didn’t see it coming – and love it all the more for that.

    Bottega Veneta

Finally, we’ve got a clip that I wasn’t really expecting; wasn’t really waiting for. The new Bottega Veneta films quietly appeared online, without a lot of anticipation beforehand. I didn’t love the first one, but this one – okay, the start’s a little slow, but the visuals are absolutely gorgeous, the bottle is glowing, and the colour palette is breathtaking. I’d love to hear what you ladies think of it!

Classic, reinvented | Clinique Black Honey Lip Duo review, photos, swatches

The product: Clinique Black Honey Lip Duo

I’m going to start off this review with a story. Albeit a very short story, but a story nonetheless.

Once upon a time, there was a young makeup addict named Rae. She was getting on just fine with glosses, and blushers, and eye makeup – but she had one terrible, terrible flaw: she didn’t own any lipstick. So, one day while travelling, she picked up the ever-hyped Black Honey Almost Lipstick.

The lipstick’s texture was love at first swatch, and the translucence was perfect for a first-lipstick sort of lipstick, but… the shade just wasn’t quite right. It was cute, for sure, and many in fact said it looked just right – but as she soon found out, this young beauty addict simply didn’t like warm (or even slightly warm) lip colours, no matter what.

Like so many other products, the slim silver tube, inconspicuously labelled Black Honey on one end, ended up leaving her collection – but the encounter was never forgotten.

    The Almost Lipstick

The Almost Lipstick texture is honestly just lovely – it has the same smooth, comforting (but not-too-heavy) weight of a light layer of petroleum jelly, but it has more shine payoff, and because it’s firmer in the tube, it’s much easier to apply.

Because it’s so sheer, the classic Black Honey just sort of “amps up” your natural lip colour. I’d definitely recommend it for neutral and warm skintones, and it’s best for medium-light to dark complexions – ladies on the very fair side of the spectrum may find this one a little harder to pull off.

The Long Last Glosswear SPF 15

The true star of the show here, though, is the Long Last Glosswear end of the duo. I hadn’t tried Black Honey in gloss form until this one came along (though it was originally released in gloss format, and is sold as a Superbalm at Sephora), and I love it.

I wasn’t crazy about the Almost Lipstick against my skintone, but this one? It’s absolutely perfect. Something about the fact that it’s both more sheer and more glossy has me sold, and I’ve been reaching for it on an alarmingly regular basis. Okay, so the formula could do with being a little thinner (though the heaviness does increase wear time), but it’s blissfully glitter-free, ridiculously shiny (without ever looking gloopy or tacky), and just so… effortless.

    The verdict?

If you’re new to Black Honey or if you’re a longtime fan, this is the perfect time to pick up a tube. It’s a smash hit for a very, very good reason, and while it quite isn’t as universal as advertised, it’ll still flatter a good… say, 80% of skintones?

Give it a pass if you’re into more pigmented lip colour, but if you’re searing for a sheer duo that’s easy to throw in your purse and apply (even without a mirror), don’t miss this one!

P.S. Did I mention that the gloss is gorgeous?

P.P.S. No, seriously, it gives me, like… supermodel lips. I’m afraid this is what true love looks like!
