Keeping us dry: The Body Shop’s DeoDry line!

What it is: The Body Shop DeoDry Dry-Effect deodorants

A bit about the line: The nifty thing about the DeoDry line is that, while being all the lovely things most “natural” deodorants are (paraben-free, aluminum-salt-free, etc,) the Body Shop has also worked in all sorts of nifty “mainstream” antiperspirant traits as well: great scents that last for more than five minutes, the option of roll-ons vs solids, and decreased sweating. Plus, the solids are translucent and waxy (in other words, the DeoDry line doesn’t leave white marks,) and the roll-on containers can be used again with a new liquid cartridge when they’ve run out to reduce waste. It sounds like a dream come true, right?

    Liquid — Chilled and Breezy

Well, here’s the good news: it is a dream come true! I’ve been running around with the roll-on for the past little while, and I’ve really been liking it. Though (like any roll-on,) it does take a fair amount of time to dry, it’s just lovely when it is dry — while I don’t notice a huge decrease in sweating, it does keep me from smelling funky. The scent that I’ve been wearing is perfect; just heavy enough that I’ll catch a whiff every now and again, but light enough that it doesn’t interfere with my perfume.

However, I realize I’m not the best judge to review a deodorant for you ladies. Like many other Asian ladies,  I do sweat, but it doesn’t ever really… smell. (At least, my family’s like this. Anyone else?) I’ve gone weeks in the winter without wearing deodorant at all, and there has literally been no difference in smelliness. As for the sweating? Not even “clinical strength” antiperspirants decrease that! (I tried one last summer out of curiosity. Liked the deo, but didn’t really get results.)

So, I had my smelly enemy try one, too.

(If by “smelly enemy” we actually mean “awesome but not smelly friend, who happens to be able to answer questions about deodorant.” I really just wanted to be able to use the phrase “smelly enemy” because it sounds cute.)

    (Smelly enemy smelly enemy smellenemy!)

    Solid — Cool and Zesty

Becky, the gorgeous gal from posts like this one, took this stick to the sweltering heat of New York in July. And guess what?

    She didn’t hate it! Ta-da!

Like the roll-on, the solid sticks come in three scents, prevent smelliness, and don’t leave white marks on your clothing. However, Becky noted one problem: the packaging.  For whatever reason, these lids have a stopper built into them, which means that you have to rollrollroll the stick up when you use it, then rollrollroll it back down to put the cap on.

    Solid — Fresh and Floral

So, this category’s really just here because I wanted to share some photos and some thoughts on the scent ;)  I don’t think you’ll need a separate review for it, as the formula’s the same as the other solids! However, seeing as this is the last scent in the line… may as well, right?

Anyhow. It’s cute, it’s pink, and it smells the part! I found this to be very feminine, and give off the strongest scent of the bunch. Nothing too annoying, but it definitely is a touch more scented the other two. Ironically, though, Becky’s reaction was “it smells like my dad.”

I guess scents really are subjective!

    The verdict?

Overall, we were really happy with the new DeoDry line, and I was particularly thrilled with the Chilled and Breezy roll-on! (I have a friend who picked up the very same one, and loves it just as much.) The only problem is the lid of the solid deodorants, which I agree is… well, we’ll just say “less than optimal.” However, I didn’t have any such problems with the roll-on — in fact, I really liked the packaging! It’s well-made and lightweight, but it doesn’t feel flimsy.

    Try them if…

    • You’ll be buying the roll-on, because I cannot find a single problem with this!
    • You want a liquid that’s pretty low-packaging in the long term (remember: refills.)
    • You want an aluminum-free deodorant, but you still want the benefits of a drugstore anti-perspiriant, like reduced sweat and cute packaging.
    • You’re sick of having to make the compromise of using natural deodorants that smell like crushed, dead leaves. Ick! There are only three DeoDry fragrances (so far,) but they’re pretty well-crafted scents.

    Skip them if…

    • The packaging problem of the sticks is going to bother you. But, maybe the stopper actually comes out, and two smart chicas just couldn’t figure it out? *puzzled*

Grab a cuppa: an open thread on a stormy day

Hey there, lovelies! We usually have open threads every now and again on Fridays, so this one’s obviously a little impromptu… but I’ve been noticing a lot of off-topic questions in comment threads recently, so I thought you might appreciate one ;)

As usual, feel free to chat about your day, ask about any questions you may have, or just burst into song! Right now, there’s quite a storm brewing (mmm, the air smells lovely) and I’m listening to the Reverie Sound Revue EP pretty much on repeat. (Though earlier, when it was actually raining, I had Florence + The Machine’s Lungs blasting through my speakers.)
How’s the weather and music on your end?

Live Clean Argan Oil is like heaven, but for your hair.

What it is: Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Restorative shampoo and conditioner duo

Why it rocks: Remember last week’s Purple Jewel review? Well, the Argan line has fixed all of the problems of the Purple Jewel line — but keeps all the nice things about it, like the price and eco-friendliness!

    What’s the same:

    • The awesome price (under $8 each, not on sale.)
    • The lather. And by “the same,” we mean that it exists — without SLS!
    • The “free of” list (SLS, parabens, silicones, phtalates, all those “questionable” ingredients.)

What they’ve improved: Um… everything else! The main turn-off of the Purple Jewel line, at least for me, is the scent — it’s much too synthetic and leads to headaches galore, to put it simply. However, the Argan Oil smells much less sharp than all of the other Live Clean products I’ve smelled, with a nuttier, more robust fragrance.

The other problem the Purple Jewel line has is that it really takes the volume out of your hair. So, with the Argan Oil’s claims of being “restorative,” I was really worried about it weighing down my hair! I shouldn’t have been — my hair looks great. It’s shiny, smooth, and back to its normal volume. Which isn’t much, but it’s the best I can hope for ;)

The verdict? I absolutely love, love, love this duo. It’s everything I was looking for: it’s silicone- and paraben-free, it smells lovely, it’s cheap, and it leaves my hair feeling (and looking) great. The one alteration I would make would be to take down the scent a bit, but that’s just because I like my showers on the DL in the scent department!

I’m not promising miracles, but I know that for my straight, slightly dry, chemically treated hair and very-dry scalp, this is a godsend. My scalp and hair feel hydrated, but I’m not weighed down at all!

Availability: This one’s easy to find — Well.ca, drugstores, and even some supermarkets!

P.S. The line also includes an oil treatment, above. I alllmost tried it, but returned it before opening when I noticed that, well, it really doesn’t have a lot of actual argan oil in it! And I’m glad that I did, because I’ve been hearing some pretty harsh reviews since then. (Apparently, it’s sticky and frothy. Um, ew?)

So, while I love the shampoo and conditioner, I’m not actively recommending the oil. Have any of you used it? I’d love to hear what you thought!

On trend: jewel tones for Fall/Winter 2010

Okay, so they’re predicting pastels for Spring… but before we trudge on towards Spring, we have to first go through my absolute favourite season — Fall/Winter! Collections usually smoke it up around the holidays, and darken even before then for the turning of the leaves, but I’m particularly liking the jewel tones we’re seeing this upcoming season.

    Nordstrom, Kate Spade, Sephora, bareMinerals

    ShopStyle

From promo images (and from yet-to-be-released shades swatched up to my elbows,) I can say for sure that you’ll be seeing the darker side of the spectrum in the next few months — deep teal and navy blues popping up instead of the bright turquoise of summer, rich red-violets replacing carefree blue-purples (blurples?) and gorgeous emerald hues appearing out of nowhere.

So… are you as excited as I am yet?

    The Silicone Giveaway

Good morning, my lovelies! As I’m sure you can tell from the title, I thought it was due time for another giveaway. This one just so happens to feature three products that are equally amazing… and equally chock-full-of-silicones. (Okay, so the Marcelle is a “may contain,” but I’m soooo not going to risk it.)

    One winner will receive…
    • Urban Decay Razor Sharp Ultra Definition Finishing Powder. I was so excited to try this… before I found out it contains ‘cones. The description sounds fab, and the packaging is just gorgeous.
    • got 2 be Smooth Operator Smoothing Lustre Lotion, a lightweight and slightly lustrous product designed to smooth fly-aways, to protect the hair from heat styling and UV rays, and to impart a silky finish to the cuticle. (The kind on your hair shaft… not the kind on your nails!)
    • Marcelle Face Powder (loose,) in Translucent Medium. Why the Medium may contain ‘cones, but not the regular Translucent, I haven’t the slightest. I’ve been loving the latter recently, and I’ll try to have a review up soon!
So there you have it: a Lustre Lotion that really does have a lustre to it, the gorgeous Urban Decay Razor Sharp, and a wonderful Canada-exclusive powder. I can’t love them, so you’ll have to do it for me!

    Here’s how to enter…

    • One entry for following; just leave a comment and let me know that you’re doing so. You may enter once a day until the giveaway closes! You must be a follower to enter.
    • For an extra entry or two, link back to this post on your blog or Twitter. Or anything else that you can come up with, like Facebook or MakeupAlley… but remember, no trolling! No one likes trolls. Not even trolls*.
    • *This is just a guess. I have no idea what goes on in the minds of trolls.

[Note: Please for the love of god do not hotlink my images. [crazy stare] Save them to your own hard drive and re-upload them if you’d like to include an image in your post. Hotlinking will result in all entries from your IPP being voided!]

I know the comments thread is bound to get really full, really fast, so I will be deleting comments instead of approving them — but don’t worry, that still means they’re getting entered into the spreadsheet! Please leave a separate comment for each entry.

This giveaway closes in one week (midnight leading to August 19th.) The winner will not be emailed; I will post the winner at 6:00 on the 16th and wait up to seven days for a mailing address. So, be sure to check back!

As for those of you on a silicone-free diet with me, don’t fret — I promise to have a ‘cone-free giveaway for you soon ;)

    xo,
    Rae

Summer of Love review: will you spare a little love for Urban Decay?

What it is: Urban Decay Summer of Love nail kit

The gist of things: The Summer of Love nail kit is available exclusively online, and will run you $28 for seven bottles of polish (0.17fl oz each.) For those of you even less math-inclined than I am, that’s $4 a bottle ;)

From l-r: Shine On, Woodstock, Love Light, Hashbry, Magic Bus, Aquarius, Psychedelic Sister.

All of the polishes are Big Three Free, aka free of toluene, formaldehyde, and DBP, and feature a  220-strand brush. Why that number is important, I haven’t the slightest clue — but I like it! It’s pretty standard as far as brushes go, but it’s not too thick, so the bristles splay out quite nicely on the nail. (I just hate it when brushes are thick; it makes it so hard to apply the colour.)
    The shades:

Shine On – an absolutely gorgeous nutty metallic. Of all the shades, this one’s my favourite! One coat is enough to tint the nail beautifully, but three deliver just an amazing opaque shade.
Woodstock – a bright, bright pink! It’s not hard to get this cream finish completely opaque.
Love Light – my second favourite. Three or four layers produces a lovely, shimmering opacity, but it’s really just gorgeous with one or two layers (especially overtop a cream finish polish for some sparkle.)
Hashbry – a vivid violet with bold red fuchsia undertones.

indirect / flash / on paper. click to enlarge.

Magic Bus – safety-pylon orange. I personally hate orange, so that’s all I’m going to say. It’s very, very vivid an opaque, though!
Aquarius – shimmery, turquoise… what else could a girl ask for? I feel like a lot of this season’s turquoises pull too yellow for me, but this is just perfect.
Psychedelic Sister – imagine if you created a creamy coral, but instead of mixing red and orange, you mixed hot pink and orange. Well, that’s what this is!

indirect / flash / on paper. click to enlarge.

The verdict? If you’re looking for some awesome, opaque brights, this would be perfect for you! The Urban Decay polish formula is pretty solid, and the shades are just gorgeous. For someone who settles on one or two shades and wears them around forever, this is obviously not a great choice — but for those of you like myself, who can’t commit to any one colour and never finish off bottles of polish, this would be perfect!
P.S. Want darker, moodier hues? Check out the Urban Decay Apocalyptic nail kit. It’s on sale for $18 on the Urban Decay site, just click on the image above!

    FOTD: Violet Royalty with Marcelle

Right this moment, I’m having a bit of a love-hate relationship with Marcelle. I mean, it’s mainly love, but there’s a little bit of hate and resentment packed in there too.

Why, you ask? Well, on one hand, they’ve created an amazing collection at mid-range / high-end drugstore prices. But on the other, this means that I’m going to have to recommend everything in my upcoming reviews, and you’re all going to (a) be broke and (b) hate me, or (c) not be able to find it and (d) hate me anyways.

They had to have known they were doing this to me! Marcelle, tu ne m’aimes pas encore? You’ve put me in such a tight fix!

(I might be less angry if their upcoming makeup collection was awesome but their new skincare additions sucked. Nope, no such luck… I love ’em all. But that’s another story for another day!)

    How-to:

Start by priming the eyes and skin. For the eyes, cover the lid with a wash of mid-toned red-violet. Then, use a fluffy brush to buff a deep indigo-violet into the outer V and slightly into the crease. Add a shimmery copper-pink to the center of the lid, and blend a dot of a neutral, shimmery pink-ivory to the inner corner. Finish with mascara and a bright, pigmented violet liner.

For the lips and face, tone down lips with a nude lipstick and top with a sheer pink gloss. Blot off the excess. Contour the cheekbones and add a matte, cool-toned pink for definition. Finally, blend a shimmery highlighter onto the tops of the cheekbones and finish with translucent powder.

For more images and a products used list, follow the cut!

    Eye close-ups:
(Sorry, the first one totally got butchered by the sunlight — I promise it wasn’t that harsh in real life!)

And  my left eye… I feel like I never photograph this one! The lighting was a little different, hence the tones. They’re a little farther from real life (I’m not quite as… pink… as my monitor is saying I am right now,) but the colours are just oh! so pretty. How could I resist sharing this photo?
