What it is: Tom’s of Maine‘s original care deodorant stick; mine’s Honeysuckle Rose.
What you need to know about deodorant: First of all, it isn’t supposed to stop you from sweating! Deodorant is made to stop you from smelling; it’s antiperspirant that stops your pores from releasing sweat. The reason why many deodorant users choose deodorant over antiperspirant is that they don’t contain aluminium, making them a good choice for those worried about the breast cancer/antiperspirant links. There are a number of types; waxy solids like this one, dusting powders, even rock-based sprays and solids. (Which I personally don’t like — wetting a rock and then smothering your ‘pits with them just feels gross! They can also be quite messy, and are very much a no-frills product.)
Why I love Tom’s: Honestly, I’ve never used any other company’s deodorant, so I can’t compare it. However, I do like that the solid stays solid, even in the summer, so it’s never mushy when you apply it. I love that the waxy solid of deodorant doesn’t leave white markson your clothing, and that it’s effective in stopping scents even before they start. Honeysuckle Rose smells incredible when you apply it (very natural, light, and fresh,) but the scent fades within about a minute — so you stay scent-free all day.
(As a side note: I’ve also tried the unscented version, which smells a little gross but whose sent fades after about a minute as well. It comes in four scents; the other two are calendula and woodspice, neither of which I care for.)
The verdict? For about $5, I quite like these, hence the fact that I’ve never tried anything else! So I encourage you to try a waxy deodorant if you’re interested in covering up scents but want to stay away from aluminium — it doesn’t necessarily have to be Tom’s, though ;) Check your local health foods aisle, or the personal care aisle in your Whole Foods-esque store if you have one.
