    Balenciaga Paris

I have standards, you know. They’re very strict, and they’re a little exclusive, and to be quite frank, it wouldn’t be that far from the truth if someone were to call me a fragrance snob.

So when you walked into my life, I thought you would be polite; fresh and perhaps a little powdery, with an air of familiarity. Something I could get used to, something that wouldn’t be breathtaking, something fairly mainstream. I thought you would be… I’m not sure. Safe?

But you make me feel real. Upon our first encounter, I didn’t know what to think of you, I just didn’t know. Each time we met after that I fell a little bit more in love. You spill like water onto my skin and slip into my lungs; you dry and you turn to the earth.

Violet, a soft violet, a little fruity with a touch of a buttery sweetness. A technological feat, you are — you’re not overwhelming, love, but you flit through my hair and around my skin all day. I feel like you’re swimming in my head, surprising me and stunning me whenever the breeze hits me, or I move too soon.

To be quite frank, you are your bottle to some extent. A strange post-modernist approach to safe society. Though perhaps not quite as stunningly gorgeous (such glass is a masterpiece,) you do your best to live up to the standard it sets. And you get there, you do. You make my heart break.

Balenciaga Paris is a new release (March 2010) by Olivier Polge.

Fresh Supernova — probably about as pretty as a real supernova. But safer.

What it is: Fresh‘s Supernova mascara (from their Magic Wands Mini Mascara Duo)

The brush and black: Yep, you read that right! I wanted to talk about the black-ness of this formula, because it could be darker. I don’t really want to complain about it, though, because it is decently black… it’s just that I’ve seen better. As for the brush? I think it’s a great size, not too fat and not too small, and for whatever reason, the shape of the wand works quite well with my lashes. (It’s slightly more narrow in the center.)

The lashes: What I really love about Supernova is that it gives gorgeously soft, feathery lashes — both visually and tangibly! Unlike with my normal tubing mascara, my lashes are touchably soft all day long. This formula is a little more on the “wet” side, which I think helps give the featheriness of lashes (something I adore, for the record.) It’s not hard to get a clump-free lash out of this, even without an extra spoolie or lash comb.

It does let out some of the curl in my lash, though, likely for the same reason (the wetness of the fomula.) But as long as I “push” my lashes while Supernova is drying, the curl can be saved! (“Pushing” -> using my finger to push the ends of my lashes up and towards my eye, causing a bend in the lash and letting the mascara dry it into a curl.) Howevermuch of a curl there is when the mascara sets, that’s how much of a curl you’ll have at the end of the day — it holds the curl quite pretty well once it’s dried a bit.

The wear: Unfortunatly, this has one major downside — smudgeing, after about three hours of wear. It’s nothing too major (no “raccoon eyes” here,) but it’s enough to irritate me, and it’s enough to marr a really bright look. That said, though, if you do neutral dark smokey eyes all the time, the smudgeing will likely look negligable!

WAIT. I lied, it has two downsides. The other: the price. I liked the price of my mini tube, but the normal retail price for a full tube of this is $25US/$31CAD, and that’s just… ridiculous.

The verdict? I really like Supernova, and as long as I know I’ll have access to a washroom every three hours or so to clean up smudgeing, I do wear it quite a bit. It keeps my lashes softer and more feathery than my go-to tubing mascara, and it’s a heck of a lot easier to apply! (Any of you who have tried tubing mascaras will know what I’m talking about — it’s hard to comb out all those clumps before its dried!) I will be rebuying the mini tube, I think, but there’s no way in heck I’d pay $31 for this — or any other — mascara.

Availability: in the Magic Wands duo, or on its own.

Snoozing away dry skin with Burt’s Bees

What it is: Burt’s Bees Beeswax Moisturising Night Cream

The basics: Okay, how cute is that little pot? I love the simplicity of this packaging, even though it is a pot. (My solution? A cosmetic spatula and a separate, smaller jar.) What’s really nifty about this product is that it literally melts into your skin — I had a dollop of this on my fingertips in my steamy-from-a-shower bathroom, and it turned to oil before my eyes! (I’m blamin’ the almond oil base.) Because of this, it spreads and soaks in like a dream.

The downside of this is that it smells quite strongly, and I just can’t get over it. Don’t let that put you off it completely, though; my friend adores the scent!

The moisture factor: I tried this out during the winter, and with my super-dry skin, my skin was always incredibly soft and hydrated when I woke up in the morning. Sure, it makes me shiny as heck, but it’s a night cream — that’s practically expected! Since then, I’ve moved it into my backup storage; with summer coming I know I won’t need this much moisture every night… and I want to make sure I have enough of it for next winter, because my skin needs this like I need chocolate.

    The ingredients:

prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, water, beeswax, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, kaolin, citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, chondrus crispus (carrageenan) extract, fragrance, glucose, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase, tocopherol, sodium borate

The verdict? I strongly recommend this, but not for everyone — if your skin is anything but very dry, I have a feeling you’ll hate how heavy this is. (Trust me, it is heavy!) However, if you’re at your wits’ end trying to find a super-moisturising (silicone free!) moisturiser for your dry skin (even if it’s not on your face,) this is definitely worth checking out.

Holy cripes. That paragraph had way too many bracketed tidbits.

My favourite wash — of eyeshadow, that is!

Come on, we all have them — those mornings when you just don’t want to haul yourself out of bed. But you do, and you throw on some blush (I usually go with Pink Fresque,) and some mascara (Fiberwig,) and some shadow (this one, Shimmery Nude by Aura Science!)

This shade is pretty standard, as far as shimmery nudes go, but I love it all the same. It’s creamy as heck, doesn’t crease, and glows gorgeously. For me, the undertones and depth are just right; it looks great as a hilight but also makes a really lovely eye-brightening wash on those mornings! Nothing gives me quite the same effect; other shadows are too light, or too dark, or the glitter’s too chunky or there’s too much fallout. I don’t know what I’ll do when this pan runs out!

(That’s a lie, I know exactly what I’ll do: cry.)
