    Sunday morning deals

I’m not a fan of the Harajuku Lovers fragrances, but they are 50% off at Sephora right now, and I’m sure someone out there will appreciate the heads-up!

And, if you’re in the US, you can stack that with the code HARAJUKUCLOCK for a free matching alarm clock…

…unless you’d rather use the code BEMATTETRIO or BEBARETRIO for three free BE products? (Again, US only, and this one’s just for Beauty Insiders.) The trio contains a mini foundation (of your choosing, both in shade or formula,) a mini kabuki brush (I warn you, they’re said to be super-harsh,) and a mini Mineral Veil.

Plus, there’s a great Tarte deal going on at Sephora: Tarte’s EyeQuatic set, that is. Not too shabby for $15!

Interested in Tarte, but that set’s not your cup of tea? Well, then I’d head for Tarte’s 30% off sale! Just use the code FIREWORKS until July 5th.

Even more Sephora: get a free mini High Voltage Eye Primer by Kat Von D with the code KVDEYE. (Don’t quote me on it, but I’m pretty sure the mini is in the shade Skin.)

And finally, you can get 25% off everything at Vincent Longo with the code SUMRX. May we suggest the Water Canvas Primer

Fall preview: The Body Shop Smoke and Fire

Just as promised — a fall 2010 preview from The Body Shop! Don’t lie, I know you ladies are just as jazzed about this collection as I am ;) Remember, the collection launches on July 6th, so mark the date on your calenders! EDIT: seems the collection was pushed back! You should be able to find these gorgeous products in-stores starting August 9th.

    Kajal eyeliners

I don’t understand why I keep having high expectations for kajals. It’s just — dumb. Really, really dumb. I try them, I hate them, I find a new one and start the cycle again…

Anyhow. I wasn’t thrilled with these, clearly. Are they gorgeous? Yes. Pigmented? Totally. Well priced? Absolutely! However, even over primer, these melt off my lids like nobody’s business. (And don’t even get me started on the waterline!)

    I’d recommend these if…

    • You’ve been wanting to try a kajal, but don’t want to spend a fortune. At $10 a pop, if you do happen to buy one and not abso-freaking-lutely love it, it’s not the end of the world.
    • You’re looking for a creamy, highly pigmented kajal eyeliner that comes not just in black (Charcoal,) but also in silver (Steel) and green (Evergreen.)
    • You want a way to create a super-fast smokey eye. These go on and smoke out like a dream — ten seconds and (ta-da!) instant smoldering.
    • Liners don’t tend to melt off your lids. (Trust me, these kajals aren’t the only ones who have for me.)

    But not if…

    • You’re looking for something stay-put and long-wearing.

One last thing? The packaging is quite deceptive: it looks cheap, but somehow, it hasn’t forgotten the important points. The lids “click” into place at the base of the tube and stay there, and the tops (below) feature a coloured Body Shop logo to let you know which liner you’ve picked up. Clever!

    Autumn Leaves compact

Okay, so here’s where fall starts looking up.

The Autumn Leaves compacts are not only gorgeous in the pan, but they’re also brilliantly pigmented, soft, and smooth… everything a girl could ask for! I can buff on some of my Berry compact in the morning and be good for the day (none of this “gone by lunchtime” nonsense.) If you plan to wear it through breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an evening concert, you’ll need to buff some more on around dessert — but for a normal day, you’ll be fine. Berry is a great shade, and while I thought initially it would be too warm for my cool-toned skin, it actually works just gorgeously.

The one drawback is the $21 price tag, and I can’t say much to make that seem any less. However, these are quite pigmented, and aren’t exactly scrawny! I don’t have a size for you in terms of grams, but as you can see in the photographs, these are fall from tiny.

    I’d recommend these if…

    • You’re looking for a higly pigmented, gorgeous-in-the-pan cheek colour
    • You want something with sleek, secure, well-built packaging
    • You want your cheeks to match your mind — ethical and non-smelly!

    But not if…

    • Yah, I’m drawing a blank. I suppose I wouldn’t recommend these if you’re looking for cheap makeup that’ll wear off really quickly?

    Overall

I think the Smoke and Fire collection is wonderful! Of course, I’m excited for autumn collections every year — but moreso this year than any other. We’re seeing a focus on (as usual,) a smokey, sexy eye, but also on a strong cheek, something that definitely feeds right into my blush addiction. (Has anyone else seen photos of those new Joues Contrastes? Whew! *fans self*)

If you thought I’d leave you without swatches, though, you’ve officially gone crazy due to the heat of summer!

L-R: Autumn Leaves compact in Berry and the Kajal eyeliners in Steel and Charcoal.
Why is my skin blue-ish? I’m not sure — I’ll ask my camera and get back to you on that one.
Still excited (or more excited) for the Smoke and Fire collection? What’ll you be hauling? Let us know in the comments!

Splendicious Lips: a natural gloss that packs a surprise!

What it is: Green Beaver‘s new Splendicious Lips lipgloss, in Amour.

What makes it awesome: As usual with the Green Beaver line, this is a great, super-shiny, non-sticky, non-drying lip product that comes without things like parabens and chemical scents. For my sister and her allergies, it’s holy grail! We’ve only found three glosses so far that she can wear, but one of them (Annabelle’s VolumeLip) is much too hard to squeeze, and one of them (Clinique Superbalm) is much too sheer. (Not to mention, it’s a lot pricier!) This one? Well, with an incredibly easy-to-squeeze tube and a price tag of only $6.99, it’s juuuust right.

Like Green Beaver’s Lip Shimmers, the Splendicious Lips line smells delicious — but I can’t quite place my finger on the bright, juicy scent. I’d say this needs reapplication every two to three hours, but that’s no problem for me! It’s easy to reapply, and is so non-sticky that I don’t mind one bit.

One thing to note is that the product will separate a bit in the sweltering heat, but a bit of tube-squishing sets the product as it should be.

What makes it epic: I’m not going to beat around the bush any longer. So, here it is: blue-tinged shine. No joke! While the base colour for this gloss is pretty neutral, the finish definitely has a bit of a blue tinge to its shine. It still looks natural (and almost, but doesn’t quiiiiite catch in photographs, darn it!) but it gives this shade just an extra boost. It’s the blueish shine that’s made me unable to stop recommending this shade to everyone! It makes it quite versatile and really helps draw attention to your lips… without making it look like you’re trying to draw attention to your lips.

The verdict? I know it’ll still be a bit hard for you to find for a while (I still haven’t spied these in Edmonton,) but if you do find them — definitely try them! I’d keep them in the back of your mind until you track down a tube, because quite frankly? They’re amazing, especially for being the first ever certified organic lipgloss.

(Be honest: I can’t be the only one who often assumes organic products will falter a bit when it comes to quality!)

I felt like I owed you guys a full-face shot after such a rave review… even if I wasn’t wearing much else on my face! I mean, that gloss looks plush.

A few added bonuses: these are mint- and petrolatum-free, tinted with fruit pigments, and those organic ingredients? Yep, they’re coming from Canadian farmers. Props for keepin’ it in the family country!

Too Faced Lashagsm: Too Funny or Too Far?

Thoughts? Opinions? Shrea them in the comments!

Personally, I can see where they were going with this — but I think it’s tacky and demeaning, and wouln’t use the mascara even if it was freakin’ fantastic. If NARS Orgasm was pretty enough, I’d get over the name and use it. If Too Faced Barely Legal gloss was just stunning, I think I could live with it.

But lashGASM?! I mean, on top of everything else… that’s just dumb

Then again, maybe I’m alone in thinking this! Which is why you ladies need to get your chatty on in the comments :P

Going greige… and finding two identical polishes!

What they are: Rimmel‘s Lasting Finish Pro in Steel Grey and Sally Hansen‘s Complete Salon Manicure in Commander in Chic.

The catch: Because these are often said to be (a) “likely similar,” and (b) possibly as close as the drugstore will get to “greige,” I wanted to get these and compare them for you; pick a favourite so you didn’t have to. What I didn’t expect was finding that the two are completely identical!

The colour: Okay, so I guess there’s one tiny silver lining to this? If they’re the same, I only need to describe the shade once! I personally wouldn’t call it a greige, as far as greiges go… it’s too violet if you ask me, and much too dark. However, as for the shade aside from that? I think it’s very love-it-or-hate-it, and I can’t decide which side I’m on. Depending on the lighting (as you’ll see in the swatches,) its undertones seem to vary quite a bit.

Sometimes I absolutely love it, especially in indirect sunlight (where it’s a lovely deep grey-violet,) but I hate it in dim tungsten lighting (where it’s a muddy, indiscriminate brown.)

both in indirect sunlight, taken simply at different times during the day.

    The stats:
The formula and wear time seem the same, just like eveything else. They don’t feel like they’re going on thinly, and don’t streak, but it takes about three coats to make it to opacity for the pair of them. I always worry about wear time when something goes on like this, but these seem to be okay. After about a week on my toes, they’re all still in tip-top shape, save for a dent on one toe!

(But that was my fault because I opened a door on it.)

    (Which hurt, for the record.)

    (Thanks for asking.)

Additionally, both polishes feature the same applicator tip, a fairly thick but not too wide brush with rounded edges. Personally, my favourite brush head is OPI’s Pro Wide (which a lot of people hate,) but I found this one easy to work with as well! The LFP and CSM heads are optimal for fingernails, but they’ll work just fine on toenails, too.

Random sidenote: The Rimmel is also known as a dupe for Sephora by OPI’s Metro Chic. From what I’ve seen, I’d say the three of them are the same — perhaps it wasn’t a coincidence that the folks at Sally chose the name “Commander in Chic!” $5 on Sephora polish? Saved!

The verdict? If you were hoping these would be greige, take your hands away from your wallet and back away slowly. However, if you were looking for a strange but likeable brown-grey-violet, these would be a pretty good place to start! The shade is very much in the moment right now in terms of trendiness, so if this is your colour, buy one and wear it STAT — before it gets overdone and goes out of style. As to the lines themselves, I think these are both very solid fomulas, which I’d buy again should I come across other pretty shades!

Personally, I’d go with the Sally Hansen if they were the same price, simply because the packaging is lovely. However, with the Sally at $8 and the Rimmel at $5 (I told you we get charged more in Canada for everything!) I’d choose the latter, as there’s no loss in polish quality.

    Urban Decay Fall 2010

The makeup universe has basically been [expeletive deleted] itself over this Fall’s Urban Decay collection, so I thought I’d glance over it now that it’s gone live — you know, in case anyone’s been living under a rock.

The excitement, counting back from five:
as usual, all images link back to the product page.

    Five: New, cruelty-free brushes!

Four: New lashes! The “Naked Lash” line, that is. Eighteen styles, $16 (ouch!) a pop, and latex-free glue.

Three: The Vegan palette — $34, crazy packaging, a mini UDPP in Sin, a mini 24/7 pencil in Zero, and six 0.9g shadows: Minx, Urb, Gunmetal, Baked, Smog, and Half-Baked.

Two: No, seriously. New lashes. And some of them are awesome.

One: THE NAKED PALETTE! Seriously, is this not the most gorgeous thing you’ve ever seen? It’s $44 and comes with a mini UDPP, travel-sized 24/7 pencils in Zero and Whisky (black and brown,) and twelve 1.3g shadows — as described by the Urban Decay site:

Virgin (nude satin), Sin (champagne shimmer), Naked (buff matte), Sidecar (beige sparkle), Buck (brown matte), Half Baked (bronze), Smog (golden brown shimmer), Darkhorse (bronze-plum shimmer), Toasted (taupe-bronze), Hustle (mocha shimmer), Creep (near-black metallic), Gunmetal (dark grey metallic).

Christine’s image is infinitely better than Urban Decay’s, so this is from her review. Be sure to check it out!

    So… who’s excited? :P

You and I? We’ll always be on our Honeymoon…

What it is: Hard Candy‘s Blush Crush, in Honeymoon. (It also comes in Bombshell, a medium-deep bronze, Pin Up, a luminizer, and Living Doll, a great bright pink.)

Everything you need to know: It is great and you need it.

No, seriously, that’s all you need to know. Stop making that face at me!

    Alright, fine…

The shade: Honeymoon is a gorgeous light peach with violet veining. The veining doesn’t much affect the shade, but it does look divine in the pan! She’s not unusually pigmented or unusually sheer as far as baked blushers go:  you won’t get NARS-esque pigment out of her, but you can definitely use– wait, why has this blusher suddenly become female?

Anyhow, you can certainly use this on its own. For a pale-skinned gal like myself, it’s perfect for a light, fresh, peachy cheek colour. For someone medium toned, it would look amazing for some sheer, subtle luminosity. And for someone much darker, it would make a gorgeous hilight!

different lighting. the one on the right is closer to reality, though.
you know, seeing as I’m not blue.

The product: This Blush Crush wears through the entire day, for me — I need a bit of a refresher for the evening, but once this is buffed in at seven o’clock after breakfast, I’m fine until five for dinner! What really takes the cake is the incredibly fine shimmer particles. Not only do they make Honeymoon breathtaking in the pan, they create that much-lusted-after “glow” that everyone so loves. “Which means what, exactly?” you ask? Well: it means that you won’t look like a greasy disco ball, which is not in the least bit attractive.

Not even from the point of view of a disco ball.

The verdict? I know these are hard to come across outside of the US, so: my dear American girls, if you haven’t tried a Blush Crush — try one STAT! And for the rest of you? I say we plan a trip to the US together so we can stock up on these, because Honeymoon is sixteen levels of completely awesome.

To put this into perspective, I haven’t ever found a blusher with this much luminosity and/or peachiness that I’ve loved the way I love Honeymoon. She’s incredible!

(And no, they’re not paying me to say that.)

(They’re also not paying me not to say that, though, which is good. Because then I’d say it anyways and they’d be angry. And they might take her away! Oh my god, please don’t take her away!)

FOTD: inspired by Scarlett at the Tonys

Last Monday, I put up a few photos of ScarJo’s Tony Awards look, a gorgeous violet eye with matte pink cheeks and natural, slightly-pink lips. A couple of you expressed as much enthusiasm about the look as I was feeling, so I duped it.

Or, at least, I tried to. See, it didn’t go so well — I got distracted partway through and it ended up a lot (a lot) darker. I figured we’d leave it at that and more on.

Then Hard Candy’s Daydream came in the mail. Perfection. I knew what I had to do!

For a how-to, a product list, and many more images…

    How-to:

    Eyes
Start by priming the eye area. Then, using a flat shader brush, cover the lid surface with a sheer pink-violet. Using the same brush and shadow, foil the colour onto the middle of the lid for intensity. To add depth to the eye, use a fluffy brush to buff a dark blue-violet into your outer V, adding just a bit at a time and adding more if needed.

Then, take a shimmery true violet and blend the two together, adding this colour also to the lower lashline with a flatter eye brush. Clean off this same brush well, then use it to add more of the pink-violet to the inner corner (both on the lid and on the lower lashline.) Add shimmery, silver glitter to the inner V, line with a dark, shimmery violet, and apply mascara.

    Lips & cheeks
Contour the cheeks with a medium toned matte pink and top with (a) a luminizer on the very top of the cheekbones, or (b) a sheer, luminizing blusher on the top half of the cheekbones. For the lips, use a creamy, shimmer-free “natural” lip colour, with a bit of pink to it if possible.

    Eyes:

The only thing not cooperating for this look? The sun! It was full sun or no sun… I chose no sun for some of the shots, and the results were blurry. (I’m okay with that, though, because full sun would have just produces wierd tones and grossness anyways.)

    A few with flash:

    Face:
    Products used:

Annabelle Vivid Violet (shimmery true violet)
    Senna Destiny (dark blue-violet)
Hard Candy Daydream, violet side only (sheer pink-violet)
Korres Plum (red-violet used as liner)
    MAC Blanc Type (matte highlighter)

    Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Annabelle Glitterama liner in Oxidize (silver glitter liner)
Hard Candy Blush Crush in Honeymoon (glowy, peachy blusher)
NARS powder blush in Mata Hari (matte pink blusher)
Ellis Faas Milky Lips in L107 (peachy-pink “natural” lip colour)

The Body Shop // Fall 2010 // Smoke & Fire

Have you ladies seen the promo images for The Body Shop’s Smoke & Fire Autumn collection this year? Because they are gorgeous!

The collection includes two Autumn Leaves compacts (one is in Chestnut, and the other, Berry,) and three gorgeous Kajal eyeliners (Charcoal, Evergreen, and Steel. I’m loving the $10 price tag!)

The line also re-promotes the Lightening Touch concealer (which is like a Touche Eclat, basically,) three shadows (Golden Peach, Midnight Blue, and Velvet Green,) and the Colourglide lipstick line. What do you ladies think? The collection will be out July 6th, but I should have a sneak peek up later this week!

    Murale

Edmonton’s first Murale opened this past Thursday, and (of course,) it had to be checked out on the opening day.

What makes Murale different from Sephora is partially that they carry different brands and have worked in Optimum points, but mainly that they offer services as well. Ours has a Benefit Brow Bar and (like all Murale shops,) offers makeup lessons and makeovers. Additionally, there’s a station to be shampooed and blown out (or just blown out, for a smaller fee and quicker service,) as well as a table for manicures.

The one thing we really noticed was that on opening day, the Murale store had more staff in it than customers — no joke! It was the middle of the afternoon and mother counted seventeen sales associates just on one floor, which outnumbered the customers by a couple. Talk about irritating: no, I don’t want your help for the fourth time!

For a few quick and (crap-tastic) shots of the fragrance wall, run behind the cut!
(Ooh, plus a photo of a ridiculously pretty Shiseido lipstick.)

A few lines I spied while I was there:
brands in italics are not, for some strange reason, listed on the Murale site

    • Benefit
    • Bobbi Brown
    • Cargo
    • Chanel (fragrances only)
    • Clarins
    • Estee Lauder
    • GOSH
    • L’Oréal Paris (this looks so out of place!)
    • Lancôme
    • Lippmann Collection
    • Memoire Liquide
    • Molton Brown
    • Shiseido
    • Smashbox

I wasn’t really concerned with the other lines, but check here if you’re wondering what else they may stock!

The lipstick: Shiseido’s The Makeup Shimmering Lipstick in SL14. Talk about being ridiculously pretty in the tube!

Anyone else have a Murale story to share? I’d love to hear it in the comments!
