It’s been a minute since my last post on theNotice, so let’s keep things lively—and talk about a bunch of stuff I’ve been loving recently. (I have more things-I’ve-loved coming up soon, too. Keep your eyes peeled for a stellar new concealer, a lovely sunscreen, and a fantastic new sex toy launch.) As we all know, my hair is in a permanent state of crisis. So, here are the best silicone-free shampoos and conditioners for thin hair that I’ve tried in 2022.
The Ordinary haircare review: Scent-free moisture with great texture
I’m absolutely feral for anything The Ordinary puts out. From their squalane cleanser to their Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA, I literally cannot get enough. I went through seven tubes of Natural Moisturizing factors in the past year.
As a beauty writer, my beauty product budget is pretty much unlimited. I receive a ton of PR from brands, plus anything that I purchase to feature on theNotice is a write-off. So, if I’m going through half a dozen bottles of one of the most affordable products I’ve ever tried, you know it’s because it’s knocked everything else out of the water.
When The Ordinary came out with their first two haircare products, I had to try them. They didn’t disappoint: The Ordinary Sulphate 4% Cleanser for Body and Hair ($8.70 CAD) gently removes dirt and oil from my hair and doubles as a foaming, scent-free bodywash. The Ordinary Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner ($8.70 CAD) is also scent-free, and hydrates without weighing your hair down. (So important when you’re looking for conditioners for thin hair.) The Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner is really weird and cool to use—it has an almost waxy texture that goes transparent at the edges.
I bought four more bottles of these after trying these out for the first month, stocking my beauty closet with two extras and leaving two at my mom’s for weekend stays.
Prose haircare: Conditioners for thin hair, thick hair, or whatever hair you have
On the absolute opposite end of things is Prose. Where The Ordinary offers literally only two options for every hair type, Prose tweaks unique formulas to match exactly your hair type. The brand lets you customize your ingredients, fragrances, and hair needs. They even use your postcode to figure out the conditions your hair will be working with.
My Prose shampoo is in the Botanica scent, which I find to be soothing without lingering. My shampoo for my thin hair features jujube bark extract, kale, spirulena, peppermint, biotin, and fermented rice water, and my conditioner for thin hair is colour-safe (it’s tinted lightly purple) and features collagen, hyaluronic acid, and jojoba oil alongside fermented rice water.
Prose was first recommended to me by a longtime reader, Kate, who swears by the brand. (And she does have really nice hair, so I guess that’s two confirmed pros for Prose!)
Authentic Beauty Company review: One of my favourite conditioners for thin hair
Finally, let’s close up these shampoos and conditioners for thin hair with a sleeper hit: Authentic Beauty Company. I was sent the Authentic Beauty Company Glow collection ($90.90 CAD), which is for coloured hair. The brand makes Hydrate (for dry hair), Replenish (for damaged hair), and Amplify (for thin hair), too.
(My thin hair and I definitely need to try Amplify.)
The brand’s Glow collection smells like sweet baked goods, spicy dried fruits, and cinnamon, and honestly? I don’t hate it. It’s half teen girl living her best life; half gourmand perfume. The entire line is silicone-free—even the hair mask and oil drops—and I kinda like the funky, ultra-modern bottles, even with their twist-on caps.
Out of the three of these sets, ABC is what I keep coming back to. The scent is perfect for fall, lingering deliciously on my sheets, and Glow lifts all of the icky oils right off of my scalp without leaving it feeling tight or itchy. I opt for The Ordinary when I’m going out or seeing friends (scent-free whenever we can, baby!), but this highly giftable range is really stellar, too.
