Worth the Hype? Vaseline

Friday, May 2, 2008

Yes! Vaseline is your cure-all beauty product, it is your holy grail! Good ‘ol pure petroleum jelly has been around for years, and for good reason. This has fulfilled every promise 8-hour has made and has come short upon, and more.

But what can you do with this super-cheap holy grail? (Which can be even cheaper, by buying a drugstore brand, which is literally the same! …er, just don’t buy scented. Remember, some of the come smelling like baby powder!)

  • Make lipgloss. Like, actually. I have a tutorial (my first!) in the works, but I have to get my act together.
  • Use it, pure, as a nice, shiny, clear gloss. Moisturising as hell, and super-cheap, not to mention non-sticky!
  • Put it on cuts to help heal them.
  • Slather it onto dry elbows and knees to plump ‘em full of moisture.
  • Rub into hands, cuticles, and feet – put on cotton socks/gloves, go to sleep, and wake up soft as a baby!
  • Use as a clear mascara or brow gel.
  • Gloss eyelids – not recommended, gets pretty gross pretty fast.
  • Smooth on a thin layer to give sheen to cheekbones, accentuating them…
  • …or to give a gloss on your shin bone, making calves look more toned and supermodel-like!
  • Put on pre-home-dye-job to help form a barrier between your skin and the dye, keeping you clean and making it easy to wipe off the messy dye.
  • Use as a cuticle balm.
  • Heap on your lips to moisturise them
  • Feed super-dry skin. It’s said that it won’t clog pores, to which I cannot support or rebut, but it does feel gross!
  • Remove makeup

Wow! I think I’m done – anyhow, what my point is, is that it’s great. Please do share any other Vaseline tips in the comments!

The verdict: A resounding “Worth the hype”!

Cure-Alls: Contouring

Friday, March 7, 2008

Contouring is a great way to put dark brown-toned products to work. It can be done with bronzer, brown eye shadow, or (for a less harsh effect), too-brown foundation.

Powders work best, and can be applied with a blusher or bronzer brush. Properly applied, contouring makes you look slimmer, heightens your cheekbones, and is, simply, flattering!

*edit: I came up with another one! Apply a touch on the outer 1/2 of an Asian lid – just on the fold – and ‘pull’ the colour outwards a bit for more depth.

Away, you winter frizzies!

Image from a Google search :P

Oh, the winter frizzies. Flyaway hairs, uncontrollable static – but how to get rid of it? There is the obvious solution – anti-frizz shampoo, winter conditioners…

What are the other ways you can solve this problem, though?

In a hurry, you can grab a sheet of Bounce from your laundry room and run it through your hair – beware, though, you’ll smell of laundry all day!

If you have time, put some anti-frizz or straightening cream, balm, or serum in your hair after you wash it. But remember – just use a dab. After it’s dry and styled, run another dab through it. I love using Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny serum – it smells fab, and works like a charm!

If you wake up and it’s a mess, anti-frizz and straigtening products work great then too – and if you have a minute or two, pull your hair into a chignon. A low one will even work with a toque to help fend off the cold winter chill!

In a pinch, you can moisturise your hands, and run them over your hair lightly once it’s alllllmost soaked in.

If these quick solutions can’t get rid of your frizzies, then… well, actually, I don’t know what you would do. I’ve never been in a situation when these didn’t work!
