Thank you for tolerating my mess… | 2017 resolutions

door-opens-door-closes

theNotice is undergoing a little bit of construction, so please excuse the mess over the next few days! There are a couple of kinks that need to be ironed out in the new layout while it’s live, so you guys are seeing the not-quite-final version.

I’m working on fixing the “suggested post” width in the full-sized desktop mode as well as adding comment buttons on the bottom of each post, but if you encounter any other issues, please let me know in the comments.

Spent all of last year dreaming about returning to this beautiful door…

My resolution for 2017

One of the most meaningful things that I read in 2016 was, surprisingly enough, a comic. It’s by Yao Xiao, a Chinese-born New York artist, and it can be viewed in full here.

As someone who has lived with depression and anxiety my entire life, this comic spoke volumes to me. I’m trying my best to be mindful about when I say “thank you” vs “sorry” this year, from the ground up — including little things like saying hey, thanks for bearing with me while I put the finishing touches on this layout. I really appreciate it!

Hopefully, forming habits with the little things will eventually influence my more meaningful conversations, too — like saying thanks for listening instead of “sorry I cried on your cat again, I know he is afraid of water.”

PS: What do you think of the new layout?? It’s the first one that I’ve ever purchased instead of built, and I LOVE it.

  • Woo hoo!! love the new layout Rae – so minimalistic and perfect timing for the new year!! That comic piece really speaks volume – I think I'm one of those people who apologize too much. That's not a good thing too!

    Thank you for sharing ;-)

    • Thanks, Stephanie! I'm so glad you like it :)

(I'll tell you a secret… it was actually my goal for 2016 to get a new layout up. So I'm a few days, but I'm happy that it's up now!)

Hi Rae, this post and the comic strip also spoke volumes for me as well. I've also dealt with anxiety and depression all my life and I've come to terms with the fact that it's a part of who I am. I often apologize to close ones for the way I feel or what I'm going through at the moment. Without the mindfulness, this can make me feel like I'm inadequate or I'm doing something wrong, but it's not right. Even though it's hard to be aware at the moment, I do feel grateful that I have loved ones near by to help me through the tough times. Mental health issues are complicated and often pretty shitty to deal with frankly, but I'm in a very lucky situation where I have a great support system and for that I'm grateful and not sorry. Thanks for this post. :)

    • I'm so glad to hear that you have an excellent support system that you can rely on, Shana. That can make the most enormous difference.

      Sending you love <3

I love the new layout, Rae and good on you for making some very positive steps not only for the blog but in your life as well. I plan to stay more in the moment for 2017 which means less presence online but my boy is almost 3 and I don't want to miss out on the little things because I'm busy staring at the screen.

    • Thanks, Shireen! I'm still ironing out the kinks, but I love it, too. :)

I'll miss you if you're online less, but you and your son totally deserve more time together. Kids grow up SO fast!!

I am reading on my iPad, so I can't fully compare the new layout to the old one, but I can assure you it is easy to navigate on a mobile device.
As someone that has never dealt with mental health issues I am often surprised what goes on behind the scenes. Something like the comic above is eye opening and will hopefully help me undestand people around me a little better. Good for you for making changes like this.

  • I love the whole 'thank you' vs. 'sorry' comic. I still want to apologize when I'm running late for something but am definitely trying to say sorry less. I love the new layout!! Happy New Year!

  • Lily @ChloeAsh

Happy new year Rae and love the new layout. It's simple and chic at the same time.
I think I commented, but I'm not sure if it went through.
I love the comic strip. Sounds very positive, and I think we all say sorry too often. I have to keep this in mind!
